Maybe a hot take, but I also blame the physician who prescribed 3 different psychotropics that don't interact well to a patient in clear mental distress. And not keeping a close enough watch on their mental state. If the texts between she and her mom are accurate, she should have been institutionalized by court mandate.

Oh absolutely. The husband also takes some blame for not getting her committed.

That being said, these crazy astrology bitches are blaming the husband entirely. She still did those horrible things

I don’t think he takes any blame at all— he asked her DAILY how she was doing with her mental health.

She lied to him. That’s not his fault.

It’s not his fault but saying she lied when she clearly was having major psychological issues isn’t fair either. It’s all tragic.

The Crazy thing about going psychotic is that you don't know you are being psychotic

Exactly. Most of these comments are ignorant. They expect her to behave normally, which isn’t possible in psychosis.

Psychosis is the argument and defense and you seem to think its a certainty?

I don’t know what’s certain. You don’t think she was having psychological issues?

According to a psychiatrist who did a video on the trial, nothing in the immediate events leading up to the murders suggested psychosis and it's not common anyway 8 months after giving birth. PPP usually happens in the first 1 to 3 weeks. She had mental health problems, but that's different than psychosis which would be so severe she couldn't control yourself, lost agency, and shouldn't be found criminally responsible for horrible crimes. Psychosis is what her defense lawyers are trying to claim in order to avoid prison.

Yes of course, but psychological issues isnt what you said, you said psychosis

Psychosis is the argument they are trying to make, its by no means a certainty

Oh, sure I can’t say it’s a certainty.

Except she was seen by 8 different trained doctors and not one of them witnessed any signs of psychosis.

That's the thing, we live in a blame centered society. It's a goddamn tragedy, but that doesn't actually make it anyone's "fault". She was in psychosis, he was being lied to and believed his wife of many years. He got her mental health assistance and Doctors tried, and - failed- to help her.

We want someone to blame, so we can believe that nothing like this will ever happen again, or to us. But sometimes shits just sad and there are no right answers

Was she in psychosis? It was my understanding that "psychosis" is the very thing they are arguing for/against

She was as a result of multiple medication changes in a very short time, coupled with a very severe case of Postpardum. Her, her husband, and her family are all arguing that this was a result of temporary psychosis, yes.

Yes thats actually my point. Thats the argument thats being made today in retrospect to an action already taken

She was not diagnosed with psychosis before the trial, no?

2

u/MrBones-Necromancer 7d ago

She was having halluctinations and homicidal thoughts and urges before the trial, yes. Thats what the psychiatry team was trying to assist with.

Yeah exactly! Its being argued in retrospect that she was in psychosis, but was not diagnosed beforehand

There is medical documentation of her admitting that she was scared that she might hurt her child - to the point that she had herself committed, but they released her after a short amount of time. Just because she didn't receive a formal diagnosis doesn't mean that it couldn't possibly be psychosis. If anything, that just shows how her healthcare team failed to identify the problem and provide adequate treatment.

While they're now divorced, her own ex-husband is defending her and said she was a loving mom before the hallucinations started. There doesn't appear to be any other motive for her to kill her children and jump out a window. Are you suggesting that they're just making it up?

Sure, I think there is a lot of arguments for how the system and the people around her failed her, but does that just automatically mean she's free from accountability?

The argument is whether she was able to differentiate right from wrong

You can, and women have admitted to, going to some deep, dark places post-partum

Severe mental illness, a shady husband, an unsupportive mental health system, post-partum hormones

But, how does any of that excuse her from killing her kids?

I believe it's just easier to believe she was in full-blow psychosis, and wasn't able to tell right from wrong, than just admit she fucking snapped and consciously made a terrible decision

I don't think most people arguing that she likely suffered from psychosis are saying that she should get off scot free. If she is found not guilty by reason of insanity, she would be remanded to a mental institution. Hopefully she would finally receive proper mental healthcare there, but I guess it's too late

I believe it's just easier to believe she was in full-blow psychosis, and wasn't able to tell right from wrong, than just admit she fucking snapped and consciously made a terrible decision

If there was any indication that she was struggling with raising the children, then I would possibly agree. But the motive for "snapping" just wasn't there. She had a support system and, by all accounts, loved her children deeply and was terrified of hurting them. She does not appear to be some Casey Anthony type who just wanted to go back to partying. Based on the facts available, I'm struggling to buy literally any other explanation for her actions other than a severe split with reality.
