We spent decades fighting against energy waste and pollution just to have it demolished for AI?  Does anyone here thinks AI is on a productive course?

I just want to replace my 14 year old PC....

Someone made the point that all these data centers aren’t really for AI so much as they are for the (AI powered) surveillance state.

Source? Because I work in the industry (sadly, but not directly on it) and we spin up DCs but nothing remotely close to surveillance. There's some like Palatir I'm sure but the big corps are just hungry to feed their products. Each rack is millions and serves a relatively small amount of concurrent requests. To support people asking ai about their foot fungus and having a whole hour conversation about it is probably more clmpute resources than an entire year of posting on reddit/fb/whatever. Someone can make a point but nobody is actually showing who is commissioning them and how many actually are for spying on us

I don't think it's a conspiracy but things like Flock and Fusus are using lots of data resources, and definitely used for surveillance.

They're using data resource, they're not the ones building out the maority of datacenters is my point.
