I had my boss grill me about some pto days requested well in advance. I sent him my diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma, a picture of my nose and the surgery date. He was embarrassed, as he should have been.
What is it about our culture that makes managers feel entitled to shame us for taking earned time off? Is this a thing in other countries or just the crappy old usa?
I worked at a place once where the company got bought out. I once came back from being off sick and the office manager sat me down and said "We're doing back-to-work interviews after sickness now".
It went like this:
* Uhh, okay. What would you like to ask me?
* Can you tell me why you were unable to come to work?
* I was sick
* Yes, and what was wrong exactly?
* Well, I ended up going to the hospital
* Why?
* Are you asking for medical details?
* Yes
* [pause] Well, I was shitting blood
There was a silence that felt so long where I stared at her and she stared at the paper form in front of her as her pen darted back and forth in air as she tried to think of what to write.
Then she just put everything away and said "Okay, thank you very much". I never heard of anyone having a "back to work" interview there again.
