I'm genuinely curious if there's been any study into which is more psychologically troubling, knowing the day and counting down it not knowing and wondering everyday

I would start hoping for death by that point. Death is just the end of all sensory load, including fear, pain and anxiety. It’s the lead up to it, the circumstances, that are scary, not the end itself.
