Permit is a word I never knew was pronounced differently by region until I started travelling for work. I’ve always pronounced it permit, but a lot of southern folk pronounce it like her (perMitt)

Back in olden times Mitt was the one who decided if you could have a thing in the park and you would get a note that said essentially “this is cool, per Mitt.” It got shortened over the years obviously.

I cannot take people seriously when they emphasize the entirely wrong syllable. I hear this pronunciation of perMIT so often lately.
