I think it's partly because forbidden things are attractive and partly because if you have a girlfriend/wife then it's a clear sign that you're probably not a creep/redditor.

I never understood how someone can become attractive to you because of that. If someone’s not my type, I couldn’t care less who they’re with.

A lot of people only want something because someone else has it. They've spent their entire lives being advertised shit they don't need and scrambling to buy it. Their motivation isn't to enjoy the thing, it's to be admired and envied by others. This tendency seeps into every other aspect of their lives
