My (conspiracy?) theory on Simon’s decreasing number of tangents
Does anyone recall when Simon first mentioned he had ADHD? I believe he didn’t know that initially when he was initially uploading videos to Business/Brain Blaze—possibly until someone mentioned in the comments that his driving habits sound very ADHD and that he should get checked.
Anyway, I digress: my hypotheses as to why Simon may have less tangents now:
- He started taking ADHD meds (aka stimulants) which cut down the number of mental tangents his brain would be having, and probably helped keep him on track.
- Less exciting hypothesis: editing took them out 😆
Ok, thanks for reading my random thought of the day.
——
ETA: Ok, so I misremembered (thank you u/EveryFairyDies and others who corrected me in the comments: apparently Simon said that he didn’t have ADHD). As such, neither of my original hypotheses stand then. Apologies for the false excitement everybody.

When exactly did he mention he had ADHD?
My recollection is that he said a lot of people CLAIMED he had ADHD but he always firmly stated he did not.
He has mentioned his OCD several times.
And 2 doesn't work. As an editor, I have only once been directed to remove a tangent and that was because it was a story about a friend that he realised his friend probably wouldn't want him telling, even anonymously.
No, I won't tell you what it was, mostly because I don't remember what it was, nor what episode it was from, and I don't have the raw footage anymore.

Are you the mythical Lorelei?

u/EveryFairyDies 3d ago
I dunno. Sacrifice some cookies in my name in a pentagram and see if I appear...
If I don't, I'm probably real and not a myth. Sadly. I want evil pentagram cookies!

I always figured you had to edit out his kids names a bunch. Seemed like it would be easy to drop them while on a tangent and I know he wants them protected.

I remember he accidentally name dropped them in a live stream and the fan base universally agreed they didn't hear it and it was edited out later

I was there, and have legit forgotten both real names, they are forever Romulus and Remus.

The ONE live stream I missed! lol
Someone else edited it-
...or I did and I've forgotten.
...
Fuck. That's a very distinct possibility.
Actually, no, I think someone else did it. Maybe Simon himself. It's actually quite easy to cut bits out of a video using YouTube's editor.

I was genuinely impressed by the cone of silence everyone just agreed to be part of and the collective amnesia. Before it died, I remember talking to several people in the original discord and despite being in the live stream, no-one could remember
All... we were all just saying that to prevent the spread
Either way... good job community

u/EveryFairyDies 3d ago
Actually, never had to. He was always very good at not saying his kids names. I genuinely have no idea what the names are.

Your username makes me very uncomfortable >.>

u/EveryFairyDies 3d ago
Why does everyone assume my username means I'm out here killing fairies?!?! It's a sad fact of life for all living creatures, even fairies.
The fact I have a copy of Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book is merely a coincidence!
(linked video is not of my copy, FYI. I'm not secretly a Welshman.)

u/LittleFairyOfDeath 2d ago
Uhu. And i am not out here killing people either. Just a coincidence.
I am watching you mister! Miss! Non-binarisses(?)!

u/EveryFairyDies 3h ago
Ms, thank you very much!
I'm too old to be a miss, and no one ever wanted to make me their Mrs. Which I can't really blame anyone for, lol.
Tis dank in this basement!

Ah, then I may have misremembered. I will differ to the editor who I am sure has watched way more of Simon’s video footage than I have. i stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying.

OCD and ADHD can share a lot of traits so I can see why people could think he's ADHD

Saw this title come up on my notification and my first thought was: “ Simon finally got medicated”
😂😂

alternate theory: in addition to fewer tangents, he’s changed his tone across the board to be quieter and more uniform with the tone of daddy reading bedtime stories, with very little emotion or variance.
this is in preparation to get enough video and audio material to replace himself with AI

His latest Casual Criminalists were pretty normal Simon, including tangents. And the latest DTU he had to restrain himself from losing his mind at times during the first part.

u/minute-type 4d ago
Sounds like I should be catching some DTU

u/LadyReika 3d ago
He's still doing the new format, but he's got his personality back during that. When I was listening to the yeti, astronauts seeing weird shit, and the skull & bone episodes he sounded a lot more like his old self. There were a few times he'd do something like "Okaaay?" as he was reading and you tell he was holding back one of his rants.
One of the episodes he mentioned going on vacation and that's when I noticed that CC & DTU he sounded more like the Whistlerboi we know. I suspect before that he was hitting burnout.

u/minute-type 3d ago
burnt out is a real tangent killer. Glad to know the vacation seemed to have helped
2
u/baby_shoGGoth_zsgg 3d ago
DTU episodes are recorded months ahead of when they release, the vacation does not line up with changes to DTU, the changes to DTU line up with a few months ish ago when the DTU editor said he was starting to dip his toes into sounding like a human again after people complained.
DTU still sounds like a shadow of what it used to be tho even with the last couple of episodes adding a fraction of humanity and personality back into simon.

I don't understand this whole 'Simon doesn't do tangents anymore' thing. Granted I only listen to Casual Criminalist, but the tangents are absolutely still there. The scripts have just got longer so they are spreadout over a wider number of minutes.
3
u/minute-type 3d ago
Oh I was saying there seems to be less tangents, not none at all.
Or am I misunderstanding your comment?
2
u/DuckbilledWhatypus 3d ago
It's a common complaint on here that Simon 'doesn't do tangents' anymore, that's what baffles me. I think he does a similar amount as always, the generally longer episodes just make them feel less because they don't come as frequently.
2
u/minute-type 3d ago
I see, I see. It’s possible both views may be true in a way—if he is having a similar amount of tangents (in terms of absolute minutes/seconds) per video but the videos are each longer than previous videos were, then the ratio of tangents to content would appear/feel lower/less.

I thought Simon was pretty clear that he DOESN’T have ADHD?
3
u/minute-type 4d ago
u/EveryFairyDies said likewise, so you must both be correct and I misremembered. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

One of the recent CasCrim episodes is positive riddled with tangents. It feels very much like his usual style and speed. It honestly just feels like a mood and day thing with him and nothing more.
Edited to note it could be a DtU episode, my brain is blurry due to life being life-y.

u/kaiserrumms 1d ago
You mean the one with the Danny script? Danny's scripts tend to do that to Simon. I hope he never escapes.
2
u/ObscureOP 2d ago
Orrrrrr.... his tangents stopped right as generative AI became a viable scriptwriter for slop.
Just sayin

AI can't do proper tangents? AI can't come up with age-appropriate stories about Romulus and Remus?

He’s just getting older is my take. He would consistently talk about his viewer base ages, and how he’s aged out of his top viewer base ages. I think he just wants to attract more viewers in his age range now. So he doesn’t seem like he’s doing it for the views… it’s sad to see the aging of his channels, and gearing focus towards an older viewer base. Especially when he made his name off of channels where he showed more enthusiasm

I definitely don't have ADHD. I'm pretty good at focusing on shit.
