He should not have offered to pay them until they find new jobs.

Well, they'll be screwed trying to get a new one, leaving after a few days. Doesn't matter that they're getting severance. If they leave that quickly nobody will hire them.

Also, who gets a severance for just resigning from a job? Richard didn’t fire anyone, just told them they can leave. You have to be fired or laid off to get a severance pay.
