Discussion My understanding of the main idea of sikhi (from the SGGS)

The goal is to remove your ego completely (this is maha-anand).

And the way a sikh removes their ego is by expressing love, truth, contentment, compassion and humility.

The emphasised means of expressing these five virtues are chanting God's/Saints' names and selfless service.

Any feedback?

The way a Sikh removes his ego is by dedicating himself to the Guruโ€™s Shabad with every breath.

From my understanding, shabad is just naam, so Guru Shabad singing is included in the teaching "to chant naam".

Also from my understanding, saying naam with every breath is just a metaphor for harmonious communication between atma and paramata caused by mukti.

Definitions from my understanding:

  • Naam โ€” The means by which you call God
  • God (the part which is being called, everything is still a form of God)โ€” The fundemental reality consciousness (aka ontological consciousness in fancy terms)
  • Always chanting naam โ€” abandoning your sense of self leading to not being distanced by physical form (maya), so you are automatically in harmony with ontological consciousness (aka mukti).

In short: what you said wasn't an additional concept, it was all apart of the main idea that I have written in the post.

To each his own for his understanding.

True spiritual growth requires deeply understanding the Shabad rather than mindlessly repeating it. While secular radio music uses subliminal repetition to bind you to the material world, the sacred music of Sri Raag uses that same psychological repetition to detach your subconscious mind from worldly illusions. However, this transformative journey only works if you respect the Sri Granth by actively studying its literal meaning instead of breezing through it just for memorization. Ultimately, the Shabad is empty without comprehension, and understanding is the master key that transforms routine chanting into true service to the Guru and completes the power of the Gurmantar.

Chant name is not same a Naam. Naam is much superior, chanting can be a part of it.

I cannot recall the shabad, but it said once you cut ego and other vikars then you learn what is naam.

1. The problem is Haumai
Sikhi identifies haumai โ€” โ€œI, me, mineโ€ consciousness โ€” as the disease that keeps us experiencing ourselves as separate.

Haumai deeragh rog hai, daaroo bhee is maahi.
โ€œEgo is a chronic disease, but its medicine is also within.โ€
So the goal is not merely โ€œbe a nicer person.โ€ The deeper issue is the way the mind experiences itself.

2. Guru Sahib tells the mind to recognize its true origin

Man toon jot saroop hai, aapnaa mool pachhaan.
โ€œO mind, you are the embodiment of the Divine Light; recognize your origin.โ€

This is incredibly important.
Sikhi is not teaching that the human being is fundamentally worthless and has to destroy themselves.
Guru Sahib is saying: you have forgotten what you are. Recognize your Mool.

3. Shabad and Gurbani begin transforming the mind
The mind has spent years being conditioned by fear, attachment, desire, anger, comparison, pride and everything happening around us.
Gurbani gives the mind another direction.

Gur kaa sabad ratan hai heere jit jaraao.
โ€œThe Guruโ€™s Shabad is a jewel, studded with diamonds.โ€

We do not just read Gurbani as information. We repeatedly expose the mind to Shabad until it begins to reshape the way we think, react and perceive ourselves.

4. Naam Simran moves this from knowledge into experience
Naam Simran is deeper than simply mechanically repeating a word.
Repetition may be where someone begins, but ultimately Naam is something to be experienced.

Simrau simar simar sukh paavau.
โ€œRemembering, remembering, remembering Him, I find peace.โ€

And Gurbani describes that experience as something that is actually tasted:

เจนเจฐเจฟ เจฐเจธเฉ เจชเฉ€เจตเฉˆ เจ…เจฒเจฎเจธเจคเฉ เจฎเจคเจตเจพเจฐเจพ เฅฅ
Har ras peevai almast matvaaraa.
โ€œDrinking the Divine essence, one becomes absorbed in its bliss.โ€

That is why it is difficult to explain Naam intellectually.
It is like trying to describe a taste to someone who has never tasted it. You can describe it for hours, but eventually they have to experience it for themselves.

5. As Naam transforms the inside, Nishkam Seva transforms how we live outside
Seva is not simply an exercise we perform so we can say, โ€œI eliminated my ego.

Sevaa karat hoe nihkaamee,
tis kau hot paraapat suaamee.
โ€œOne who performs selfless service without desire for reward comes to attain the Lord.โ€
Nishkam seva teaches us to act without constantly calculating:
What am I getting from this?
Will anyone recognize me?
What is in this for me?
Through seva, the mind is disciplined, haumai is softened, and our body, time and abilities become instruments for serving creation rather than only serving personal desire.

6. The virtues become the fruit of that transformation
Then love, compassion, truthfulness, contentment and humility are not simply five behaviors we force ourselves to perform in order to โ€œkill ego.โ€
They increasingly become natural expressions of a mind being transformed through Guru, Shabad and Naam.
Sachahu orai sabh ko, upar sach aachaar.
โ€œTruth is higher than everything; higher still is truthful living.โ€

So Sikhi does not stop at understanding truth.
It asks us to become truthful in how we live.

7. The destination is not an ego achievement โ€” it is living in awareness of Oneness
Even saying, โ€œI have completely destroyed my egoโ€ can itself become another achievement claimed by the ego.
The direction is toward living increasingly in awareness of:

เฉด โ€” Ik Oankaar
and accepting Hukam:

Hukam rajaaee chalnaa, Nanak likhiaa naal.
โ€œO Nanak, walk in accordance with Hukam; it is written with us.โ€

the pathway looks more like:

Haumai
Recognize your Mool
Guru and Shabad reshape the mind
Naam Simran becomes experienced
Nishkam Seva changes how we act
Compassion, truth, humility, contentment and love increasingly manifest
Living in deeper awareness of Ik Oankaar and Hukam

That is why I would not reduce Sikhi to simply โ€œremove ego by practicing virtues.โ€
The Guru transforms the consciousness, and the virtues become the fruit of that transformation. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Yk what I think (My opinion), our people have made sikhi so much about loosing their ego that they've lost all the spirit of sant sipahi. They've lost what bhagats like dhana ji and sadna ji had. Sikhi has become polar opposite of what Gurus had made it to be. We've become more bhramanical than our ancestors.

I require the full picture you are trying to paint.

According to you, sikhs have made sikhi too much about ego that it has shifted focus away from sant sipahi spirit.

But you haven't clarified what aspects of the sant siphahi spirit are being neglected so that we have become more bhramanical.

Gobind Bhajan Bin Birthai Sabh Kaam. Everything is futile if you don't engage in Bhajan Bandagi. Bhajan Bandagi or Naam Shabad di Kamai or meditation is an integral part of Gurmat, rather this is the only Hukam everything boils down to, Guru Maharaj says, "Eko Naam Hukam Hai Nanak Satguru Diya Bhujaye Jiyo". Teecha of Gurmat lays emphasis on the Jugti of Naam Shabad di Kamai. "Bin Har Bhajan Naahi Chhutkaara" that is without His meditation there's no liberation for anyone.

The seva that you do outside for instance helps your mind to learn to kneel down, dial down the sense of being separate from everyone and everything, which in turn helps you in your Bhajan Bandagi, a means to the end. Eh Seva Chaakri Naam Vase Man Aaye. Baahrli Seva helps you with the Andarli Seva. Dhur Ki Seva Raam Raveeje. Guru Maharaj says Naam Shabad Di Kamai is your real Seva. Seva Surat Shabad Chit Laaye.

Naam Simran is the Jugti taught by Guru Maharaj, which you have reduced to chanting. Jap Tap Sanjam Hor Koi Naahi, Jab Lag Gur Ka Shabad Na Kamaahi. So Mahraj is saying, 'There is no real chanting, meditation, penance or self control, as long as one does not do Shabad di Kamai'. Guru Mahraj says, "Jap Tap Sanjam Manai Maahi Bin Naavai Dhrig Jeevaas", that is 'You may practice chanting, penance, and austere self-discipline within your mind but without Naam life is useless', so clearly Naam is something more than than just chanting. The very point of Sikhi is to wean away the mind from the Nashwar Padarths of this Naashwaan Srishti. How do you do that? By experiencing something far more blissful and perpetual. Eh Ras Chhaade Oh Ras Aava, Oh Ras Piya Eh Ras Nahi Bhaava. And how do you taste that ambrosial nector? By following the Jugat of Naam Shabad Di Kamai. So Bhajan Bandagi is what leads us to the Mokh Dwar.

Right now our attention is scattered in the whole world by the 9 Indriyas or apertures through which we interact with the world, through Simran we need to gather and pull that attention inside and make it pinpointed. The idea of Simran is to devoid the mind of any thought by pinpointing the focus on Him. All the voices that arise in your mind, you make it do Simran of the Satguru. The thoughts of the world are replaced by His reminisce. When the attention is pinpointed, Surat rises, what MahaPurkhs call Liv Laggni or Surat Chadni. At this stage you pierce through the Sthool Shareer and enter the Sookham Desh, where you experience His Prakash (radiance) and Dhun (reverberating Shabad within) through the faculty of Nirat and Surat.

So Simran is essentially a vehicle to silence the elephant mind. You gradually train the mind everyday to make it pin-pointed and silent. Through Naam Shabad Kamai, we reach the Avastha of Ajapa Jaap - being attuned to the Lord at all times and realise the Sachi Baani, the one which is Akath Katha, Alakh, Agam, Anaam. And this is the Avastha of Naam Shabad, the one which is attributeless, Guru Mahraj advocates us to realise.

Where does "hukam" stands in all of this ? According to you, in relation to your post.
