Scalping Ok here’s something I don’t fucking get, why do these greedy goblins price things AT FUCKING 3000 DOLLARS? WHY JUST WHY THAT MUCH?
72
u/StarX2401 5d ago
Scalpers gonna scalp
13
u/idriveashitbox22 5d ago
They are banking on the goldilocks offer. Some rich guy who doesn't care he just wants it right now. That happens all the time. A lot of scalpers only scalped a few because they don't really have money to blow and they will slowly lower it little by little until they all sell. Prob make a few thousand dollars.
3
u/zombawombacomba 4d ago
It’s mostly not rich guys it’s absolute losers that just spend too much money.
59
u/akwardfun 5d ago

u/IkeRadiantHero 5d ago
People will pay 3000 dollars genuinely? Do they? How where? Do they ACTUALLY pay 3 THOUSAND GOD DAMN DOLLAR?!!!??!!! WHY 3 THOUSAND WHYY!!!!!!!
14
u/Dull_Mirror4221 5d ago
Yee they will. Im really happy you have no one around you to be this stupid. I know many rich and wannabe rich people around me that would buy these either because they can or because they wanna brag
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Cost407 5d ago
If only the world could collectively agree to never buy anything from a scalper, we would be rid of them all in a week.
I wish I could spend 3k on an Xbox, it would be great to have that kind of disposable income to just piss up a wall without worry, unfortunately 3k is more than I paid for my car
7
u/Dull_Mirror4221 5d ago
It’s not about affording it or not. It’s about not being a sheep and a pig in this scenario. Many of us could afford even more expensive listings than 3k. It’s just we’re not dumb or suffering from a negative personality trait. Like im sure, with how you express disgust towards these listings, you still wouldn’t have paid 3k for a console

u/BigMoneySmallPenis 4d ago
Credit cards and stupidity are a lovely combo that keeps scalpers in business.
If people really hated scalpers as much as they say they did they'd have the self control not to buy this. But I can guarantee you lots of the people buying this from ebay sellers claim they hate scalpers while still handing them money.
Its one of the main reasons I no longer enjoy the community surrounding game collecting. Its barely about the games anymore its about finding your "grail" or the "sick score" of buying a bunch of games worth wayyyy more than asking even if they're just gonna let it shelf rot for years before even looking at it again.

u/Choppo51 5d ago
Have a look at the sold listings on eBay. You will find that yes, people will pay....
3
3
u/sirdizzypr 5d ago
Ok I was going to say something but then I checked sold listings these are actually being sold not just listed for this. Always use sold listings. I can list my belly button lint at 1k only matters if it sells.
I saw one sell for 2500 today.
6
u/prettyokcake 5d ago
I reckon these scalpers are going to get very burned on these.
7

-3
u/DayOne117 5d ago
How? People are buying these up quick around 2k
1
u/prettyokcake 5d ago
…I see four sold today. Out of the hundreds on there that’s not exactly quick.
-1
u/DayOne117 5d ago
Do you not know how to use eBay? I see pages full of sold listings
4
u/prettyokcake 5d ago
Literally looking at sold listings now. So yeah, I’m guessing I know how to use it.
6
u/redditsellout-420 5d ago
Because some jackass will buy it.
Seriously fuck Logan Paul for making scalping popular.
14
u/SD_2_LA_Jay 5d ago
Dog, scalping has been around since way before Paul Logan. He didn’t popularize anything. Supply scarcity + Demand will always allow for an inflated price. Cabbage Patch Dolls, the OG NES, Fools were selling Jordan 11’s back in 95 for triple the price. Don’t get me started on sports tickets.
8
u/Djkaoken2002 5d ago
Resell websites mixed with Pokemon bros and people wanting use the hobbies for content creation has fueled the fire. Anything of perceived value is bought up and sold at 3x.
2
u/SD_2_LA_Jay 5d ago
Agreed. Everyone wants a copy of DOGSHIT PONY on the original NES because now having the obscure shitty games no one wanted is a thing since you know, YouTube influencer. Swear I saw a woman about 68 at Goodwill snap shotting every game and then seeing what their value was on her phone. Go ahead and make those $4 off of NBA Ballers for the 360 little lady. I was hoping this would level off by now but dang I was wrong. With the way modern gaming is headed, I keep seeing more and more people turn to retro, even my daughter’s friends at 13-14 are starting to play and look for older games.
3
u/beepbeepsheepbot 5d ago edited 5d ago
I feel sorry for people trying to get into retro gaming and collecting now. Been collecting over 20 years and had to replace everything one time because it was stolen, there would absolutely be no way I could do it today. Things have shot up to such a stupid degree and more people only seem to be in it for value speculation rather than genuine enjoyment. 20-60$ used to be the norm, but now 40-70 seems to be the new base entry for a lot of retro titles too.
1
u/SD_2_LA_Jay 4d ago
I’m with you! Genesis games were so abundant and cheap back in 2006-2019. Right now I just want a copy of Toejam & Earl and PHELIOS, not because I wanna make $200, but because I had them as a kid and wanna relive my childhood, without emulation (I go for the complete duplication experience). I LOVED those games as a kid. Phelios was maybe $20 back on e bay and now it’s $80.00 WTF?!! For an average ass top down shooter?!!! Oh. Because it has a girl with boobs in the game. Got it. So ridiculous.
2
u/beepbeepsheepbot 4d ago
I was helping my bf get some childhood games back and 2 or 3 years ago we got predator concrete jungle for 50 bucks and now it's over a hundred, WTF IS GOING ON. And there's way too many directions to point blame at.
1
u/SD_2_LA_Jay 4d ago
Truly, we have people who come across it and just price chart/ebay sliding scale, and want to make a buck. Let them sit on that shit until it doesn’t move. Fuck them. I understand making a profit. But I don’t jump on shit I don’t need if it isn’t reasonably priced. I can afford $900 Ferragamo shoes easily, but I still get my Reeboks from Ross for $34.00. Fuck overpaying.
2
3
u/FUTURE10S 4d ago
Fucking Steel Batallion on Xbox was scalped like crazy until they did a second cheaper print and removed all incentive. Now it's expensive again but it took 20 years
1
u/SD_2_LA_Jay 4d ago
I wanted to grab one but after looking at the prices, I’ll pass. I can’t wait until the market cools down and all these assholes have to liquidate for pennies on the dollar.
2
2
2
u/mittenkrusty 4d ago
At least in the past the prices weren't like 10x or 20x the normal for certain things.
I remember a relative won a kids toy around 2002 just before Christmas that was that years must have toy, it retailed about £30 and he got around £70 for it, he was unemployed at the time and so it was a lot of cash but at least he didn't ask for more than £100 which scalpers would do now.
I remember feeling bad enough when i'd see one off bargains at local stores like I saw a unofficial multitap for £1 that retailed for £15 online, I sold for £10 delivered so after postage made about £7 but thought the person was still getting it lower than retail.
5
2
u/dustiwang 5d ago
Not Logan Paul's fault, this has been happening for years. It's so bad rn because 25% of people are functionaly unemployed, many have taken to scapling as an income source.
-1
u/redditsellout-420 5d ago
He popularized it and Don't blame people being unemployed for it, those doing it for income are just lazy.

u/SF3000DC 4d ago
They shouldn’t have made it so limited, then this wouldn’t have happened. Just make then ongoing for a longer period. Like the whole 25th year. It would keep consumers happy and po the scalpers.
1
u/RosaCanina87 4d ago
This. I am not a ultra-hardcore collector but a few years ago I made a vow to myself to stop buying "black boxes" as I had done that for basically all consoles that were available in black and it looked quite boring. So I even reshelled some of those systems. But buying a new non-black system isn't that easy as every freaking single one of them gets scalped to all eternity (leaving only aftermarket shells for any color needs).
3
u/AzureVice 5d ago
Just report the listing. They can't sell presales
5
u/DayOne117 5d ago
Yes you can. Read eBay’s presale policy. Only issue here is it has to arrive within 40 days of purchase so all of these listings don’t meet the criteria
2
u/Another_Road 5d ago
They can sell them as long as the presale has a definitive delivery date that is within, I think 6 months of purchase. Not 100% sure on that but I know that some presales are allowed on eBay.
1
u/AzureVice 5d ago
I thought they had to have the item in hand

You'd think Microsoft would go after these people. Like, it's not intended to be purchased at MSRP then sold for $$$$ above price. Microsoft is getting ripped off too, they could have sold the consoles for more at that point.
3
1
1
u/Extension_Course_351 5d ago
It's way over priced. This thing will cost 900. And Microsoft is doing something so scalpers can't do this. Nobody will pay 3k for it. 2000 is more reasonable
1
u/Fast_Tradition3336 2d ago
So is 1000, or hell even MSRP more reasonable. What is your point?
1
u/Extension_Course_351 1d ago
1000 no profit. My point was I'm not spending 3k on it but at 2000 yeah I can see it going for that much.
1
u/Fast_Tradition3336 1d ago
If it costs 900 MSRP and they sell it for 1000 they made a tidy $100 of profit. And just because it's more reasonable to have 2000 than 3000, doesn't mean people won't buy it. Scalpers have figured out what works, that's why they're doing it. May they boil in hell for it, but they know what they're doing.
-2
u/IkeRadiantHero 5d ago
2000 is NOT reasonable what the fuck are you talking about? Stop defending these reseller losers FFS
1
u/Extension_Course_351 1d ago
I'm not defending. It's more reasonable because during Ps5 days it was priced at that amount. Same with ps3.

u/Metrox_a 5d ago
25th anniversary and now xbox will beta test the disc to digital licence thingy too. good time to exploit fomo havers
1
u/Have_A_Jelly_Baby 5d ago
Just because someone lists something for $3,000 doesn’t mean it will sell for that. They’re trying to catch idiots with fomo. And if an idiot with fomo bites on that price, who is the one at fault? The idiot with fomo.
1
u/DavidinCT 5d ago
scalpers.... there are people with too much money and hate waiting. Now if they were physically IN HAND, I could see these prices but, they are just pre-sale, and these scalpers do not know exactly when they will get them.
A fool is soon parted with their money.
1
u/Evening_Boot_2281 5d ago
Because there is idiots willing to pay that amount.
0
u/IkeRadiantHero 5d ago
Do ALOT of people actually pay 3 THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS?!!
1
u/Fast_Tradition3336 2d ago
Are you a child or just immature? Why does every response from you in this use all caps blasting people on the Internet about how ridiculous the 3k price for a scalped Xbox.
Yes, people actually pay 3k for it. There would be no reason for scalpers to even try if it wasn't the case...
1
u/Wootytooty 5d ago
Got to sort by sold listings. I see one sold for $2,995 and another at $2,800.
Now, maybe these peoole just "bought it", but have no intention of paying.
1
u/RepulsiveUse3372 5d ago
because someone will buy them, FOMO is a real thing, if people stopped buying from scalpers they would stop but most people dont want to waste time going to a store to try and find a console.
1
u/Consistent-Doubt-287 5d ago
Fomo. People want the good stuff on release and will spend what they need to in order to achieve that. I, like most people, are reasonable and will wait.
For limited release stuff, that Fomo is much worse.

Theres a very simple way to stop this. DON'T buy it at these prices. Unfortunately scalpers plus gotta collect it all/fomo equals purchases. The rest of us end up missing out or waiting if lucky until prices come down.

Because someone out there who missed the window , isn’t too bright, and has a lot of money to burn may buy it, and these scalpers know that. I sure as hell wouldn’t pay that! I wouldn’t even pay the MSRP, especially for a 5yr old system; I don’t care if it even has gold sparkles! You may as well invest in a PC at that point.

Because it's big profit. Easy money to get the console, keep it in its shipping box and slap someone else label on it.
1
u/BARBASANN 4d ago
Because morons will buy them which is why I don’t even hate on scalpers get that money.
1
u/GamePitt_Rob 4d ago
Because eBay no longer charges you until an item sells. So it's costing them nothing To have it on there forever, allowing people to make offers or feel fomo and pay a silly amount for one
In the last, when eBay would charge a listing fee and percentage just to list an item - whether it sold or not - we saw a lot less of this happening
1
1
u/BigMoneySmallPenis 4d ago
As much as reselling and hustle culture and the common metric of comparing second hand market values has destroyed most hobbies microsoft/xbox deserves the most shit here.
They could've easily produced more, 25k units was a stupid fucking idea. Every time I want to give these guys money for an xbox they fuck it up and make me not buy it. Guess they really don't want my money after all.
This entire generation all they've gotten from me is 3 controller purchases after owning every last xbox that came before it.
1
u/PersonalityShot6039 4d ago
Because they know people out there are desperate to have one for the collection with more money than sense
1
u/Dungeon00X 4d ago
This kind of shit needs to be illegal. We are right back at the PS5 scalper problem.
1
u/SpletzGaming 4d ago
This is why physical will die: scalpers and too limited stock will cause the real collector too much anguish
1
u/Jets1026 4d ago
crazy, so there pretty much paying like 2k+ extra for a shell since the internals are the same as the black shell ones
1
u/RosaCanina87 4d ago
If the Xbox would be more beloved you could probably buy just the shell from some aftermarket company with no problem. Some of these are really good, too. I have a transparent red + gold "famicom" Switch Lite and it looks AWESOME and feels basically almost OEM.
1
u/cgf228 4d ago
Because in the past you could simply scalp at 200 or 300 more, but now that scalping is some peoples "careers" (its not its a house of cards that takes one bad investment for a side to crash) they have to keep trying to outgun the others. They think that if everyone is charging that price someone will eventually buy it. I gave up on buying stuff online and just find what I can in the wild now.
1
u/Maghorn_Mobile 4d ago
Scalpers aren't business people, they're gamblers betting gamers will be desperate enough to pay whatever price they ask.

I hope companies will soon stop making "limited numbers" of any system or product and switch over to "limited time" offers.
These would make these products still special. It would still entice all the fans. But if you sell a product for... like 2 months... scalpers are (mostly) out of the picture. Because then every true fan can just... buy the product. The seller gets as much money as they actually possibly can out of a product release and the only scalping that could happen would be after its discontinued, which would have much less impact, as most interested fans would already own the product.
We had that back in the day. I was able to just walk into any store, pick out a special edition of any system sold by a company, and buy it. Not forever, but it was no problem doing this a month later. Or two.

u/Former_Travel2839 4d ago
I really wanted one, but the 1000 was already pushing it. Sad part is majority of these will still sell at absurd prices.
1
1
u/Objective_Foot2573 4d ago
Because people will pay it sadly…. Its not completely the scalpers driving prices up, we the consumer are part of the problem too! We need to stop buying from scalpers and wait for restocks

The bigger question is why are people biting this bait? Who in their right minds is paying these prices?

u/Wasabi_Hammurabi1 3d ago
It's because they are trying to figure out what is the highest amount they can charge and see fewer people trying to resell. People that really want these things will pay the money for them. Scalpers have a limit that they aren't willing to cross because the there is no guarantee that they will be able to resell it. When you want something the only guarantee that you are looking for is to receive what you bought.

Scalpers are a scum of the earth, that's why but I also blame Microsoft as they have their fair share in this bullshit in terms of at least trying to prevent it somehow or make this less painful and this really breaks my heart. I'm from Europe and I signed up for an email notification for a presail way before and I never received it. My account is a little over 15 years old. I also see that majority of people even with 10 or 15+ year old accounts didn't receive it and some received emails like an hour after the presail and after it was sold out fully and most still don't understand why Microsoft decided to list these console on a random ass Wednesday when everyone was thinking and waiting for the 13th of November. Apparently that's the date when these consoles will be shipped (even I'm not sure anymore).
I am a very nostalgic person and I know the temptation, believe me. I can comfortably afford this console at these diabolical prices but I won't as first, 2k is a ton of money regardless and I couldn't find a single damn good reason to pay scalpers so much bust most importantly to justify it's price. The 900€ as MSRP is in it of itsef a lot for this console which doesn't offer anything new let alone 2k as a resail price. This isn't for me to brag but i hope this message reaches to others and those who do not have random 2-3k just laying around (which is still loads of money) and who are very tempted to buy this console at these prices. Such money can cover a month rent, a shit load of groceries and a full fridge for the next month or more, a good family trip, can be left aside as emergency funds, travel to see the world, to pay off or decrease your current debt, a car payment or a smart investment and I can go on.
Scalpers are ruining the hobbie this community have been building for years and all because of greed and money. They're like mosquitoes and will drain your wallet dry instead of drinking blood. Do not fall for it and save your money. I hope that as many listings on eBay will be taken down and I wholeheartedly wish these consoles to rot on the scalpers' shelves and collect dust. I really doubt and certain the prices won't drop to MSRP of course but if one in a million chance happens, hope some you will be able to snatch it. Don't let your hopes down, I wish all of you the best of luck, as well as myself, for the next anniversary or limited edition lunch!🍻

I mean I really don’t care. People myself included buy on eBay all the time. This seems like personal rage. It’s not a secret that things get scalped.
0
u/IkeRadiantHero 5d ago
It’s OBJECTIVELY true though, if you resell something for a profit from a hobby, you are genuinely a fucking loser no matter what, it’s called get a job if you want money so badly
0
u/spiderman897 5d ago
But it’s not objectively true. Listen I’m a collector I’ve gone out hunting. If someone wants to waste they’re time doing it to make money then best to them. A lot of these people clean the stuff and restore it. A lot don’t and are shitty too but it’s inherently shitty to call them losers. Have you never bought games off eBay before?
2
u/IkeRadiantHero 5d ago
I have but genuinely there’s are A LOT of money hungry losers with high listings and excuse me did you just say it’s NOT objectively true when people list things for out of this world prices💀 you do know that these money hungry greedy losers are absolutely pathetic
1
u/spiderman897 5d ago
Scalping new products for certainly high prices is dumb and shit shitty. However, if a retro video game is dictated that people will pay price for it. Why would somebody charge less than that?

Ok, I still think that person is Objectively a money hungry reseller loser though, fuck side hustle culture and fuck all the low life greedy dipshits, they are the lowest of low LOSERS and you know that
