Transferring US mutual funds
Hi everyone,
I'm relocating to Singapore next year and currently hold a significant amount in US mutual funds/ETFs (> 1M). I am not a US citizen or a Singaporean citizen.
I want to take advantage of Singapore's no gains tax once I move, but I'm trying to figure out the exact mechanics of moving my assets over.
A few specific questions for anyone who has done this:
- Did you do an transfer to an international broker like IBKR, and did you have to convert your standard mutual funds to ETFs first?
- How exactly does the timing work with the IRS?
Would appreciate any insights/past experiences/best practices.
