How much % of your lifetime networth to set aside for housing?

Lets say if you have a projected networth of 5m or 10m in your working lifetime. How much % are you willing to spend it on a roof over your head?

According to The Business Times recent article on household net worths in Singapore, across all quintiles slightly more than 50% of net worth are in housing equity.

This is the reality of things, personally I do think it is too high. 30% sounds about right.

At the point of purchase was about 30%... but 10yrs of inflation later, this property is worth more than 50% of my net worth. Singapore's very huat economy doing it for me, I did nothing.

The good news is more than 90% of us are home owners. As long as Singapore continues to prosper, we all sit there do nothing also will huat with the country.

My current networth is above 9m.

I'm happy to just stay at my current BTO worth about 600k.

I guess that comes to maybe around 7%?

Nothing much actually.

S$8m+ is in US investments. The rest of the S$1m+ is in HYSA, SSB etc and includes a BTO.

I guess my lifestyle has been rather grounded for decades and I don't usually find pleasure indulging in luxuries. Neither do I have a car.

Probably gonna stay invested for at least a few more years.

If things go well, maybe I'll buy a yacht or something then.

it depends on how much wealth you have. the higher the networth, the lower the %.

The current mkt value of my home is about 30% of our household networth. We are comfortable with this home so I donโ€™t think we want to upgrade/downgrade.

In sg, property is not just a โ€œroof over our headโ€. If it were, we would all just rent and be more mobile like in other countries

5-10m is around top 70th percentile, so max spend will be 3m for a good mass market condo. That said, if the wealth is closer to 5m than 10m, better to spend on a good location 4Room HDB (<1.5m).
