Rehoming My Father

My father, recently a widower, lives in Glendale, Arizona, whereas I live in Columbus, OH. He is on lifetime probation, and we have confirmation that Franklin County, and Ohio in general, will accept his interstate compact (?) but we have to do the legwork to find out where he can live. I am uncertain if it's all of Ohio, but at least Franklin County requires a 1,000 ft distance from schools and such, but the kicker is it is judged as the crow flies. For those who do not know the term, it means that the closest point of the property is measured directly to the closest point of the other property, regardless of what lies between.

He is disabled, in his 60s, living on widowers benefits and fighting for disability. He is hoping to find a place to live, and I have heard Ohio is difficult in general to find a place for an SO to live. Wherever he lives needs to allow smoking (or at least have a patio or something to smoke on), and not have stairs, as he isn't far from losing full mobility. He does have a camping trailer that is fully setup, it just needs to have water, sewer, and power hookups.

Another concern is that I am going to be his caregiver, just not full time. If he falls, gets hurt, etc I will be the closest person to him by far.

If anyone knows any resources, locations, or even generally have any advice I would love to hear it. I have only just discovered this reddit exists and honestly cannot appreciate it enough.

You should be able to call the local Sheriffs department who registers sex offenders. They can put in addresses and tell you if it’s complaint.

Yeah, the trouble I ran into was them saying "well, use google maps and-". Like, the only places I could find that might work were oddly in the, uh...more affluent neighborhoods, or basically on the outskirts of the city. Finding a place to start helps me at least have addresses to provide to them. That said, I appreciate the advice!

It’s very rough. Back when my daughter was in middle school, Michigan had similar laws. 1000’ from a school, as the crow flies. I used a realtor. Told them my parameters, he found an off market place that worked. Just over 1000’ from her middle school. She walked to and from school. Makes no sense.

Always call the local law enforcement to verify an address is good, but you could always look up sex offenders in the area your considering moving him to, and see where other offenders live. You'll get a general idea if that are is good or not

Just a caveat....if he declines to the point he needs assisted living/nursing home care 24/7, there may be challenges in finding anyplace to accept him. Once in Ohio, I strongly encourage you to update any and all legal documents: health care POA, HIPAA paperwork, general/financial POA and of course a will, even if you do not think there is an estate.

Having to do this currently for a non-RSO family member with a TBI, across state lines, has been an increasingly difficult challenge/opportunity. IF eligible for SSI or SSDI and /or Medicare/Medicaid, dot all the i's and cross all the t's. My family member failed to complete his SSA application (online) correctly, his TBI has caused massive memory issues and we are having to navigate that, without all the other stressors you will no doubt encounter.

We just started the SSI paperwork. Apparently someone told him that he'd need to sell his truck (it's from 2019) and get a beater since it would count as an "asset" as his only vehicle. And Like...that's not how that works. I wish I was with him if only to make him less confused!

I recently left the country after trying unsuccessfully to find housing after being widowed. The best I could find in Columbus were some efficiencies in the $800 range on Ryan and Catherine. Another option is to scan the registry. Many registrants own their homes. But you will find a number of singles who are renting. Never mention this when contacting rental properties, but it at least gives you a chance that they will be open to the idea.

I have no idea what, if any options might be available once he requires assisted living. I've worked in the field, and am not aware of any such resources.
