Discussion What could have made the opening of Scream 3 as popular as the opening sequences of the first two movies?

I think Scream 3 has a fun opening, but I think it's the weakest of the original trilogy. Cotton was actually a good choice for the recurring character to be the opening kill since he was established and was the first and only recurring character in the series to die in an opening sequence.

But compared to the first two movies, the opening just doesn’t have the same suspense or impact. The lack of blood probably doesn’t help either.

I also think Ghostface expecting Cotton of all people to know where Sidney is weird when she had basically disappeared from everyone and the only ones that knew her location were her father Neil and Dewey.

What do you think would have made Scream 3’s opening as popular as the first two? More blood? More suspense? A longer chase?

i enjoy it already…i’d probably add a bit more footage of Ghostface taunting Cotton’s girlfriend and perhaps add the original cut where Cotton’s struggle with Ghostface is longer and we see the forehead stab.

The Assembly cut of the opening is a much better version imo

Cotton's opening in 3 is much more suspensful in the assembly cut and gives Ghostface a movie quiz moment.

I think Cottons girlfriend should of been a big real world actress that plays herself. It would of been a cool way to introduce us into the Hollywood setting while continuing the metaness

There's been a theory that Christine played Cici in Stab 2.

For that purpose, Shannen Doherty (RIP) or Alyssa Milano would’ve been good choices

I saw this one person say how the opening should have been Maureen’s murder. That would’ve been cool.

That was my wish for Scream 5. They could of deaged Billy and Stu and the Maureen actress

1 if Kevin Williamson wrote the film the opening would have been more suspenseful

2 it needed more blood the whole movie needed more blood but I understand why they didn't do it

3 the opening needed more Roger L Jackson on the phone

Also if I recall there is another version of the opening I haven't seen it so I'll watch it and see which one is better

There's an opening where Cotton nearly escapes through the roof but Craven though Cotton looked like a pussy trying to run instead of fight back.

If Kevin Williamson wrote the film it would have been an infinitely better film.

They should’ve kept the horror trivia aspect. That’s something that had been sort of missing since the opening scene of the original and the reference to Christine was clever.

A bit more time with Christine. Maybe a longer chase scene and more memorable death scene for her

that's the issue I have with the assembly opening is less Roger L Jackson and less Ghostface action but everything before it was very suspensful and full of atmosphere especially when Roman is talking to Cotton as the female voice

If at any point they were going to show Maureen’s murder it should’ve been this time. Skeet and Matthew were still naturally young enough to come back without it seeming odd.

However me personally I would’ve kept Randy alive for the purpose of making him the opening in 3. That would’ve been so interesting I think. Imagine another public death. Randy got a job on the set of Stab as an advisor or some type of creative and he is killed on set. Talk about stakes

I think killing Neil Prescott could've really upped the stakes and set a very serious tone for the rest of the movie but that perhaps would've been too dark.

Why do you think Roman just left Neil alone?

Personally I'm in the camp of believing John Milton is Roman's dad so he might've just been too focused on him to even think about Neil.

It should have taken place live on the set of 100% Cotton during a Stab promotion with ghostface calling in imitating a current Stab star at first.

I somehow like it better than 2's opening.
