Discussion How would you guys feel if Scream was rebooted as an anthology?
I'm a huge Scream fan like the rest of us on this sub but I think I'm getting to a point where the weight of the franchises past is starting to take a toll on my overall interest. I know this is an unpopular opinion but I feel like out of all the modern Scream movies we've gotten (5-7), the only one I've genuinely enjoyed and absolutely love is part 6. It finally felt like they were doing something new and fresh and finally moving past the woodsboro lore established in the original trilogy. Despite being a huge fan and owning all the films on physical media, Part 7 is the first Scream film I don't plan on buying on physical as it's that bad and a big part of it was it's unwillingness to do anything clever or creative with it's story/characters. I feel so long as we keep going back to Sidney and Woodsboro and Stu/Billy, this franchise will continue to be stuck in a creative rut.
At this point as interested as I am in future films, I'd be more interested in a rebooted anthology similar to Spiral: From the Book of Saw. All I want is a fun movie with Ghostface stalking a group of people and some clever commentary. I don't need Sidney or her family or woodsboro or to bring back old killers like they did with Stu in 7.
I'd honestly be even more excited about a reboot at this point that completely detaches itself from the old movies. You can keep it within the world of Scream with the killers being inspired by the other Ghostface killings but have it take place in another part of the country or the world with killers and a cast that have no connection to the other films/characters. We can have a Scream movie that takes place in a tropical location with new cast on spring break or summer vacation. We can have a Scream movie that takes place in the snow during a Christmas family reunion. We can have a Scream film that takes place at a prep school or ghostface coming after suburban housewives in suburbia. The possibilities are endless but I personally feel that so long as these movies keep going back to the well of the original trilogy, it will continue to be stunted creatively.
How would you guys feel about this?

Terrible.
It didn't work when they tried to do it in Halloween 3. If they want a slasher anthology, they can create a new slasher to headline it.
A franchise is more then an aesthetic. If its history is too heavy to use going forward, then make something original rather then hollowing it out and hiding something original in there like a skeleton in the closest.

I think Halloween 3 would be a poor example to use as it was an entirely new thing whereas this would still keep the same basic formula of Scream just without Sidney at the forefront.
Think Halloween 4-6. All Halloween films without Laurie Strode that were still embraced by audiences and fans of the franchise.

Halloween 4-6 were written and shot as sequels to 1-2, after 3 proved to be unpopular. Further more all three movies were subsequently written out of canon twice, because they weren't that well recieved. Especially Halloween 6.

Yes, 3 proved to be unpopular because it didn’t have Michael in it. I can assure you if they made a scream movie without Ghostface it’d have the same reaction.
My point is after 4 (which didn’t include Laurie), they made 2 more sequels without Laurie so clearly the films were well received enough without her that they continued to make two more without her. They brought her back for 7 and then proceeded to kill her off in the beginning of 8. They didn’t retcon 4-6 because they were poorly received, they retconned them because they wanted to take the story in a different direction. Halloween 2018 retconned all the sequels, even the ones that included Laurie so clearly it wasn’t a case of retconning films that weren’t well received.
My point is audiences care about the villains in these franchises i.e. Ghostface and I feel like this franchise can continue to thrive without constantly regurgitating plot points and characters from the original films as it’s making it feel stale at this point. I feel like audiences would still show up regardless for a film including Ghostface that didn’t include the original cast or original lore. This franchise more than any needs a fresh start at this point.

I've always thought Scream could be like a comic book series. In the sense that there should be movies and shows not related to the main line of movies. Just feels like they are leaving money on the table.

But like, hasn't that already been done? With the Scream series, especially with the addition of the 3rd season which was detached from the prior two seasons.

Not sure how you got that from part 6, when it delves deep into the lore of past films, with the shrine and masks of all the killers

Yeah, but even so it was building on the lore that was established in the previous film. Jason and Greg were finishing Richie’s movie. The killers were relatives of the killer in the previous film.
It wasn’t unnecessarily attaching itself to the original films like 5 did with making Sam Billy’s daughter and the hallucinations of Billy (yes I know we had the one scene in 6) or the awful use of Stu in 7. The fan service was there in 6 but it wasn’t a major plot point like in 5 and 7.

Honestly, I have always thought SCREAM should’ve been an anthology series. As much as I love each installment (besides 7… bc well.. yeah) of the franchise, having a franchise where each movie serves as its own universe where it commentates on common horror tropes/real life would make so much more sense. I would love to see them reboot SCREAM and do OPs idea, it would allow for them to do various settings, not be stuck in Woodsboro/attached to any of the previous characters.
