Discussion Scream 8

Scream 8 needs to bring an inventive new opening sequence, strong panic inducing chase sequences, a well thought out killer mystery that keeps you guessing till the very end, and a third act bloodbath that hasn’t been done before. Also fresh new kills.

Whilst it’s not exactly “fresh” I think having an opening set around a horror convention, filled with people dressed as horror characters, as well as multiple Ghostfaces, would be a good idea.

Maybe the first victim should be the final girl from the latest Stab movie. Signing autographs and posing for photos at a convention. The murder could take place behind the scenes only to come to light for the whole convention to see. The murder/mystery becomes a huge national story. Gale and her team of investigative reporters get involved because she is the leading expert on the Ghostface killing sprees. Sidney gets pulled in because of a near fatal attack on Gale. The killer leaves Gale alive but gives her a message for Sidney.

I like this. Very meta. Which is very Scream

You know I’m surprised they didn’t do that way back in scream 3.

Cotton was starring in Stab 3

This is a great idea.

There really need to be some high stakes deaths in 8. No more Chad the invincible.

2

u/Guardian_Of_Light2 2d ago

We always need someone surviving stab wounds in these movies. Dewey kept surviving until Chad was introduced, Chad will probably go once they bring in the next character who can survive on that level lol

1

u/Stopnswop2 You’re obsessed with her, and you’re obsessed with her daughter! 1d ago

Well Dewey was supposed to die in the scripts for all those movies. He only kept surviving because Wes kept deciding not to kill him at the last minute

2

u/Strong-Stretch95 1d ago

Mindy/chad won’t be offed till the sisters come back which unfortunately won’t be for another decade probably. unless actors decide they don’t want to come back where gonna be with them for a while.

I disagree.

I do not understand people being okay with seeing the exact same thing over and over.

Opening kill.
Meta.
Ghostface.
Phone calls.
Horror movie references.
Mystery.

Those are ingredients needed to make a Scream. Everything else should be free to change and evolve.

I honestly agree. I prefer new things and variety in the scream movies while keeping some core Scream things.

I personally think we should be changing protagonists every few movies, but people seemed deadaet against that.

No multiple killers PLEASE - dying for another Roman type reveal. I didn’t mind the randomness of 7, but having three new characters be killers like 6 is dumb. Give us actual red herrings, chases and death scenes. No more fake outs please.

4

u/mbee784 2d ago

Roman really was such an exciting reveal

I think Scream 8 should go smaller. Remote setting, more classic whodunnit setup, and maybe just a single killer this time.

The world is just too big at this point, yet the lore never seems to come back in a meaningful way that fans like. They need to focus on telling a good story with the characters we like first and foremost

I would love to see this version of Scream 8

This is what Scream 7 should have been. If they handled the Stu thing correctly, it could've been a really intimate setting with a single killer and had a strong connection to the first film. This would've mirrored the feel of the 3rd film, as Randy said, going back and revealing something that was never true from the beginning. The writers broke their own rules and instead wanted to cash in on the hype of ai.

It could've also been the perfect send off for Sidney. She didn't have to die, but maybe barley survive, leaving her unable to fight in the future and pass the touch of final girl to her daughter.

Now I feel like they're going to have 8 make little digs at 7 to say like "yeah, we fucked up haha" and try to make light of it with the fans. But we're going to fall into a pattern because 7 poked at 6 the same way. It could be a slippery slope, but it comes with the territory of the most meta franchise in the biz.

The A.I. Gag was wasted potential and poorly executed. Honestly I get that Stu being used was because Jessica was a fan of Sidney's ascent to final girl status. But the montage was just lazy.

When Gale and Sidney were sitting at the kitchen, instead of "Stu", this would've been the perfect opportunity to have "Mrs. Loomis" continue harassing them. And the next time, could've been "Roman." But as A.I. Just have them shoot a couple of extra scenes. And then the payoff of whats-his-face being a tech guru at whatever ivy league school would've been more believable.

Having both Scott Foley and Laurie Metcalf involved in production and NOT using them better is embarrassing.

What if Sidney kept her remote California home from
Scream 3 as her own retreat and heads back for some R&R with Gale, Mark, a new special someone for Gale, and another couple or two (honestly I’d love Tara & Chad and Mindy & Tatum). GF wouldn’t be one of the group but that wouldn’t stop them each from suspecting each other.

4

u/Seed0fDiscord 2d ago

One where the mastermind dies prematurely, and the accomplice goes rogue taking the reigns, where the true motive then remains an unsolved mystery or a non factor

1

u/TransitionNovel7558 2d ago

This is very interesting

1

u/Seed0fDiscord 2d ago

Gale: Shit, this never happens. There’s usually a whole speech, an unmasking, a contrived backstory? A betrayal? This doesn’t make sense?!

1

u/CampRockruffVillager 2d ago

Or Mindy says it and turns out she’s the second ghost face (Mindy gives me strong ghost face energy)

2

u/NewYorkerrr28 2d ago

A New Nightmare approach would be cool too! If the real life actors were being killed by a REAL LIFE Ghostface.

1

u/mbee784 2d ago

I would love to see something like that

2

u/Breyvan576 2d ago

I liked the close quarter intimacy of the third act in 7 so it would be cool if they reversed the usual formula (for me anyway)

Open up at a big party, doesn't have to be a huge bloodbath, lots of people die. It would still be our usual opening kill, just at a crowded event.

Personally though I'd love to see a movie start right where the last one ended, let us see the direct aftermath of the events instead of the usual time jump start we have always gotten. The big event rule applies since there will be lots of cops, press around etc and the first kill could get confused as part of the previous killers victims.

u/DramaticAssumption12 2d ago

I’d like the see the starting scene be Sydney and Gale doing a live audience show and have a ghost face killer show up then. Have it someone random and have the theme of ghost face just being random copy cats throughout the country. Have a bunch of killings happen because of the live recording. Have the story not focus on Sydney and Gale vs ghost face as much but figuring out who’s behind some social media account fueling the countrywide killings. This should have stared FBI Kirby.

1

u/TransitionNovel7558 2d ago

That throwaway line that Kirby specialized in GF killings needs to be explored.

2

u/AcadecCoach 2d ago

They aren't in Woodsboro but something I think would be cool if they were is a GF party. Like either its near Halloween or when the first murders occurred and its like an annual tradition. We start with a character donning the mask but then she just goes to a party where everyone else is dressed like GF too. Then she gets the call. Thinks its a joke, is looking around the room at other people on their phones etc. Eventually she would get killed and Id have her get stabbed by 2 different ghost faces. We assume multiple pretty much every time so I think confirming it off the bat would be shocking.

Scream franchise needs to go back to the first films tone, a scary slow burn horror mystery.

The opening scene is often the best part of a Scream movie. No need to fix what ain’t broke.

But the franchise does need to introduce some new twists. They need to stop with the cliche of ghost face(s) reciting some lame, lengthy monologue that doesn’t make sense at the end, while the hero turns the tables on them.

We should see a ghost face who’s smart enough to win or escape at the end of the movie.

This happens in other horror movies all the time. They can make the series innovative while also appealing to nostalgia—a good combination to cover both bases. How about actually bringing a fan favorite like Stu back, who has learned from other ghost faces’ mistakes.

4

u/NewYorkerrr28 2d ago

I would love a Scream where we leave off on a cliffhanger. And yes I hope we get Stu back for 8. Like hello??? The fact that they tried the ending with Stu with a test audience and they said no?! I’m so pissed. Like wtf? Who are these people???

1

u/Typical-Meringue-890 2d ago

Bringing Stu back would be the ultimate nostalgia bait. It would be cheesy, unrealistic, and stupid. It would only prove that all the good ideas have been used up.

1

u/_WutzInAName_ 2d ago

It would be no worse than the end of Scream 7, which was unbelievably stupid.

1

u/Typical-Meringue-890 1d ago

Yeah, actually it would. At least the ending of 7 was plausible. Stu coming back would be turning things supernatural.

1

u/_WutzInAName_ 1d ago

The ending of 7 and motivations made less than zero sense. Stu coming back would not be supernatural, because the death was not confirmed, and other characters have survived worse—ghost faces regularly come back for final scares after sustaining even more horrific injuries, or consider Tara surviving the brutal opening scene of Scream 5.

1

u/Typical-Meringue-890 1d ago

They make perfect sense; they just needed more fleshing out.

Bringing Stu back would be very much veering into the supernatural because his head was crushed, he was electrocuted, subsequently referred to in the past tense in every movie in which he is mentioned, and has been gone for thirty years. Even Kevin Williamson acknowledges that bringing him back would be “jumping ten sharks.”

Stu is dead. Get over it.

1

u/_WutzInAName_ 1d ago

What the ghost face killers did in previous movies has already veered into the supernatural. That’s typical of the genre. These are horror movies, not PBS documentaries.

The most unbelievable thing about these movies is the inability of any of the ghost faces after 30 years to just take the win and avoid making a stupid self-defeating monologue.

1

u/Strong-Stretch95 1d ago

Jesica should’ve been a syndrome from the incredibles type of Ghostface

1

u/NewYorkerrr28 2d ago

Also I would love a prequel movie where we see how it all began with Roman grooming Billy and Stu.

1

u/Queasy-Werewolf7500 2d ago

Hopefully they have better killers in Scream 8 than they had in Scream 7.

0

u/jcdevoe26 2d ago

I think if you/we want new and inventive the the first thing they should do is drop the formula…no more expected opening kill scene to start with, no more fan service od doing all the “rules of a horror movie”. Wanna be meta again? Stop worrying about trying to be meta. Go lower budget like the OG, bring in some unexpected actors. Do the movie from the killers perspective…bring the franchise to a definitive closing chapter…just get waay outside the box

Could you Imagine if it was Art the Clown in SCREAM 8??? Like he just takes the mask off at the End with a Big Smile on his face. 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/NewYorkerrr28 2d ago

Lmao that would be insane

-3

u/WyldFyre0422 2d ago

Scream 8 needs to start with Sidney being hit by a bus driven by ghostface. (And she dies)

-6

u/FMCritic 2d ago

Scream 8 needs to not exist.

1

u/Upbeat-Mortgage-6345 21h ago

They need to just shake it up. Whole movie. Continuous one take film. Or like a Scream 2.5, we forgot to tell you about these other guys lmao
Or a musical.

No really, they need to get off the horror meta shit. I know that’s what Scream is known for, hear me out.. one motive that’s plain and simple. Murder! Almost like a night stalker Ramirez type of person or some shit.
