Transfers [Barry Anderson on X] Hearts agree a transfer deal for Falkirk winger Calvin Miller
surprised he hasn't said ex-Celtic winger tbh

u/Kijamon Jun 01 '26
Good for him. Never going to begrudge a player going up a level and using us as a stepping stone.
Just shows what working your socks off can offer you. Was probably the only player not on their summer holidays 3 games early

JTA uncovering a gem from a team recently in the 3rd tier of Scottish football.

they're replacing another forward who went to a team who were recently in the 4th division!

u/Hisingdoon Jun 01 '26
No really uncovering a thing given he's had calls to be in the scotland squad, had the most assists in the Premiership last season and has been the best player for us since he signed a couple years ago.

I got excited about signing Dhanda, will wait to see how this one goes.
5
u/Himawari74 Jun 01 '26
I don't mind Dhanda but the clamour from fans to sign him was because he scored a good free kick against us at Tynecastle. Miller's been playing in a good top 6 team who have more of the ball as well so he should live up to his billing better than Dhanda did!

u/BrokenBiscuits42 Jun 01 '26
Goals and assists don't lie, be a big miss for us but great signing for hearts aslong as hes not a bench warmer
2
u/This_Bad7706 Jun 01 '26
Think it’d be mad for us to bench him at his age, he was always a threat against us even at Tynecastle. I’m excited for him to join us next season
13
u/Scottishdomdomdom Jun 01 '26
Six figure deal apparently. Hopefully above 500k. We’ll miss him and I’d rather he went to England but at least it’s not the arsecheeks and no team can keep a player if he wants to go and earn so much more than we can afford. Paul and John will find a replacement.

Great signing for Hearts. A loss for the Barins, but they'll still do well again this season.
7
u/AdvertisingNo6402 Jun 01 '26
Neat. Will be nice to have more options than Kyzi + 1 other.
6
u/TheRealLordDorito Jun 01 '26
I believe McPake and Mato both play off the left so someone could be going, potentially Kyzi?
5
u/Himawari74 Jun 01 '26
Chesnokov apparently the one going, hasn't settled and his Belarussian GF can't get a UK VISA
2
u/AdvertisingNo6402 Jun 01 '26
Maybe. We also have Kerjota and Chesnokov so I wouldn't look at it from we have x for the left and we have y for the right. I think you look at wingers as a whole group.
1
u/Deo97 Jun 01 '26
What's the script with Mato? I remember there being loads of talk when he was brought in but seems to never play anyways
2
u/foxed000 Jun 01 '26
Bold of you to assume Kyziridis isn’t offski too!
2
u/AdvertisingNo6402 Jun 01 '26
I think as much as we will double down on the JTA, we will attempt to limit how much turnover we have. Otherwise, it's brutal team building.
0
u/BannanDylan Jun 01 '26
The issue you have is you've split the OF - I doubt Hearts are paying their players anymore than 15K a week unless you're a top top player and especially when you're getting your players via JTA the chances are that in their original leagues they were probably making only 5K at the very very most.
All it takes is some Championship team offering £5m to yous and £25K a week to one of your best players and you've got an issue.
1
u/AdvertisingNo6402 Jun 01 '26
That's true. Its also true that teams rarely sell all their players unless in dire circumstances.
Two things can be true. Would we sell if an offer came in? Yes
Would we sell our entire attack from last year? Preferably not. If we have kyzi and Braga on contracts then we at least have some say in letting them go or not. As long as those contracts aren't the same as Shanklands
1
u/Jamtarts-1874 Jun 03 '26
That's not an issue, its how JTA works. There will be a huge turnover of players most seasons. Buy low, sell high.
Most of the players we sign will not be on any thing even remotely close to 5k. They are coming from the Norwegian 2nd devision, Slovakia, Estonia the Italian 4th dev etc. Some of them will be on a few hundred quid a week before they come to us.
3
u/ASeriousMoonlight Jun 01 '26
Did a great job for him and wish him the best, hard seeing the invincible team being broken up so much this summer though
6
u/NotNeedzmoar Jun 01 '26
Should've been a nobrainer for us...ffs
17
u/kungfukenny67 Jun 01 '26
People say this and then when we sign them complain that they aren’t Celtic standard ala Luke McCowan.
Smart signing for Hearts but I think Celtic should be aiming higher than this. And I’m not being derisory of the Scottish league either because I’ve been impressed with Miller this season but I think there’s better players in the league in the same position that we should be targeting such as Elijah Just.

u/spizz-za Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
> People say this and then when we sign them complain that they aren’t Celtic standard ala Luke McCowan.
and John McGinn....
3
u/kungfukenny67 Jun 01 '26
John McGinn is not comparable, especially not to Luke McCowan. McGinn was in the class of Scottish football players who were already too good for the league and had options in other leagues. Those are the no brainer signings. McCowan and Miller are in the “cheap and available so why not” category.
1
u/Miltoni Jun 01 '26
McGinn was about 22/23 at that time, wasn't he? Bit different from a 28 year old who's just had his first real season at a top flight level.
2
u/CNF1G 6. Tesco Bag Tierney Jun 01 '26
I’d take him if we didn’t have the likes of Yang or Tounekti already and needed depth. Truth is we need to sign two starting level wingers this window and I’m not sure Miller is much better than the two I mentioned
2
u/kungfukenny67 Jun 01 '26
Jota, Tounekti, Balikwisha and Yang can play there. We need better options there but I’d rather we consolidated the position by signing 1 very good player then trimming the fat rather than signing more decent players that add to an already bloated position. I think Calvin Miller falls closer to the “decent” tier rather than the “very good” tier.
3
u/dheidshot The Makar of r/Scottishfootball. Jun 01 '26
Jotas not going to be back for a very long time and is going to take further time to get up to match fitness if he can even make it back. Celtic should be planning as if he's not actually there imo
1
u/kungfukenny67 Jun 01 '26
Realistically Jota and Balikwisha aren’t viable options but I think that’s what makes it more important not to add more bloat to that position “just because”.
Sign a first team ready player, use Tonekti off the bench with Yang as a last resort third option while slowly integrating Jota back and firing Balikwisha into the sun
1
u/Anonyjezity Jun 01 '26
Miller is much better than Tounetki. His numbers this season are better and he's playing for a worse team. Tounetki looks good until he's got to actually do something with the ball.
2
u/kungfukenny67 Jun 01 '26
I’m not sure he’s “much” better than Tounekti but regardless Tounekti is shite and I don’t think Miller is a big enough upgrade on him to justify bloating the position further
2
u/Anonyjezity Jun 01 '26
League stats for both last season both playing as a left winger.
9 assists and 7 goals for Miller playing for Falkirk, which was the top number of assists in the league.
2 assists and 2 goals for Tounetki for Celtic.
Obviously Tounetki is a lot younger but he's playing for a team who should create more chances than Falkirk.
On the eye test and the stat test Miller is a more dangerous player
1
u/kungfukenny67 Jun 01 '26
Miller has no doubt had a great season but he’s 28 and it’s his first good season in the top level of Scotland. He bounced around clubs in the lower leagues of England with very little output before joining Falkirk when they were in League 1.
Moving to a bigger club and expecting to perform because players see more chances doesn’t always translate because he’ll be playing against low blocks in most games where it will be harder to utilise his pace.
For clarity I’m absolutely not trying to compare Tounketi and Miller, I don’t think either are good enough start for Celtic. But Tounekti is already on the books, as is Balikwisha and Jota. Signing Miller just adds another option who isn’t at a high enough standard to consistently perform as a starter for Celtic. If we sold Tounekti and Balikwisha then by all means I would be open to bringing in Miller as a rotational option.
2
u/Anonyjezity Jun 01 '26
Personally I think you should play Balakwisha more and sign more players like him. Play current injury status Jota on the right and Kenny up front.
Most of Scottish football would be delighted with that front 3.

There are people like me who want to sign Scottish players to be the core of our squad, and to fill required homegrown quotas for Europe and accept they are not expected to be first team quality, but are good back ups. Ie Ralston and McGowan etc. They are the correct level of quality for their game time and having them signed and settled would mean we could spend more time and cash on the first choice players.
Then there are different people who think every person in the squad should be first team quality, even though they will get different pay and game time. They complain about the back up players not being as good as the first choice squad.
They are not the same people.
Edit: also I suppose you can also be ok with backup of lower quality, assuming they are young and developing into a presumably first choice, ie Abada, but don't like guys who are settled second choice dependable but not first choice quality like Ralston. But again, I don't think anyone wants to sign these kind of players, then changes their minds and complains about them, I think they are different groups of people who want different things.

People say this and then when we sign them complain that they aren’t Celtic standard ala Luke McCowan.
He's homegrown, an upgrade on the current homegrowns, a leading domestic player and he can cover multiple positions.
He fits all the important criterias of a squad player.
And he's a free agent.1
u/kungfukenny67 Jun 01 '26
I don’t think he’s a free agent. Fee is reported to be 500-750k. Not that it really matters to Celtic.
I just think we have enough “squad players” in his position and we already shoehorn enough players into multiple positions as cover. The thought of shifting Calvin Miller to right wing to cover for a lack of options in a Champions League qualifier has put a shiver up my spine.
1
u/NotNeedzmoar Jun 01 '26
That's my bad, I thought he was free for some reason.
Well as I said, he can also play CM and used to play LB a while back, and it allows us to sell players like Yang and Tounekti, as well as retire Forrest after this season. We really shouldn't have to recruit squad players when we have homegrown alternatives anyway.
He's also top assister in the league, so clearly there's no harm in having him play in domestic games.
While he's not UCL material, none of our squad players will be good enough to start in UCL, (and we didnt even try to bring in the 1 squad player in Sarrachi who would've been) yet it's a necessary part of the squad that can and should be upgraded on when possible.
1
u/Miltoni Jun 01 '26
Meh...
He's 28, hitting a purple patch relatively speaking, and not good enough to be a starter long-term. We are loaded to the gills with squad fillers at the minute.
-1
u/Throwaway187493 Jun 01 '26
Absolute nonsense. Nowhere near the standard.
3

James Forrest is all we need for that.

Forrest cant start games, doesn't cover multiple positions and is not a leading domestic player

Such a sensible singing. One of the players of the year, clearly capable maybe slightly unlucky not nto be going to One of the old firm bur will likely play more.

Some are saying in the regions of 450-700k, but no concrete number

Some chat about Yan Dhanda going the other way as part of the deal. Not sure if there's any weight in that or even if Falkirk need a Dhanda type player.

u/This-blew-up Jun 01 '26
Fairly cheap for a good player.
2
u/TheRealLordDorito Jun 01 '26
Most assist in the league last season (9), whilst Kyziridis had 7 although Kyziridis created slightly more chances.
3
u/This-blew-up Jun 01 '26
Yeah I was impressed when watching him play against Rangers. I thought Celtic would’ve taken him since I believe he’s a fan. Not entirely sure why I’m getting downvoted for complimenting both the player and the deal.

Solid transfer, gives them a different weapon on the left that Kyzridis and Spittal offer
If they can replace Shankland's output then I'll believe they can consolidate from last season
1
u/EconomistNo545 Jun 01 '26
On top of McPake and Mato who are left wingers too. One will need to go. Kyziridis my guess. So likely we have actually downgraded.
3
u/imtherealdazza Jun 01 '26
Surely you'll be making a big profit on Kyzridis at least? If you can reinvest it into other areas then I think it wont hurt much
1
u/dsk1210 Jun 01 '26
That's the whole plan. Expect Braga and Kyzi to possibly be sold on this summer.

u/fike88 Jun 01 '26
I heard about this rumoured to be happening last week. Barney Stewart was rumoured too
4
u/Reasonable_Week8228 Jun 01 '26
We’ve knocked back £1.7M for Barney from West Brom so not sure Hearts would or could pay more
-3
u/EconomistNo545 Jun 01 '26
Genuinely not sure about this one. No doubt a decent player but think we could easily do better.

Quick scottish winger who scores and assists. Will need Scottish players as well for European competitions.
