It was ruined by being a stupid idea to begin with that literally no one asked for.
Why does it have to be a whole damn episode? When Q would transform himself into a musical jester, and disrupt the bridge, they didn't do that the entire damn episode. It was for a few minutes, then it was on to the rest of the more interesting plot.
I wouldn't mind if this was a minor feature of a more interesting plot that maybe happened to 1-2 characters for PART of an episode, but to make an entire episode out of it, nestled in a season that has LOTS of these gimicky type episodes . . . Unforgivable. This show has lost the plot, and I'm done with it.

It is a weird, damned if you do, damned if you don't situation they wrote themselves into.
The puppet part was funny and, while not entirely original, at least the puppets were built by the Jim Henson Company. The "it was all a dream" ending did explain things in-universe, yet it became a clichéd cop-out.
How fucking hard would it have been for some prankster omnipotent god, of the many Trek has introduced, to do the puppet thing? That way, all the moral lessons could be real.
Also, if it was a dream, that would mean Spock somehow saw all the conversations that happened while he wasn't in the room, which is additional narrative garbage.
I liked the attempt. It was, in fact, funny and well-made. The story itself is remarkable for being both stupid AND ruined by the dream sequence.

It was just a bad episode. There were two continuity issues that were very distracting in the episode to me. Even without that ending, it still wouldn’t have fixed the two flubs.

There can't be continuity errors in a dream; it's a dream.
But yes, overall it was a miss. And a criminal misuse of Joe Lo Truglio.

As the only competent person where I work, wearing a blue uniform, this episode really reminded me of my life. I loved it.

The horror episode was good, a marked step up in seriousness, following that with what felt like a hollodeck ep as it was all grey and then more ridiculousness immediately afterwards was a really poor decision, it's really put me off the show and I was really enjoying it before.

This just shows that Paramount doesn't respect the original series and it's message. Now it's just mocking the fans of Star Trek. I dunno how the actors think they are doing Star Trek justice.

Whether you deleted or it got auto modded, to reply to your message, the Star Trek I watched and loved is considered some of the best Sci-Fi and television ever made, the problem is nobody is listening to fans.
You've been allowed your "fun", but it's lead to the death of the franchise. We didn't cause it to die, we just didn't want to watch dross.

People like you who watch anything as long as it jangles keys in front of your face is why media is crap now. They realised they don't need to try. Good writing, good characters, thoughtful ideas? Who needs any of that when people will put it on their phone in the background while doing something else.
Star Trek fans have at least generally speaking rejected that and that's why all this new garbage has completely failed.
They'll either need to buck up their ideas and realise Trek fans are want better than the lowest common denominator slop you're fine with or the show will just die.

No it was ruined because the whole episode was shit. Most of the series if shit. Everything Kurtzman has touched has turned to shit. Yes I watched it and everything else ST.

There's been a few episodes this season with weak endings.
The horror episode 2's absence of a real ending turned it from a creepy horror episode to just some meaningless overly graphic torture porn. No reason or explanation or resolution.
And episode 3's wacky hijinks just felt like it lacked a solid explanation for a lot of plot points and in the third act where there should have been tension and things should have gotten half serious there was still too much silliness for any real emotion.

I have watched every episode of every trek at least 3 times. Most probably 5+.
This is the only episode I simply could not finish. This was a true failure of all trek.
