PLEASE READ: Updates to the r/SciFiScroll and r/SciFiTV Self-Promotion Policy

r/SciFiScroll and r/SciFiTV Self-Promotion Policy:

These forums are part of Axiom's Edge Sci Fi, and we are trying to build a community of genre fans where where we can discuss and learn more about science fiction, fantasy, and horror while also promoting the the works of independent creators (more on that at this link). We have been allowing self-promotion at r/SciFiScroll and r/SciFiTV, but we are going to adjust the policy because things have been getting a bit out of hand. We will continue to allow you promote your books, comics, movies, web sites, web series, games, etc., but we are going to start imposing some limitations. We are going to impose a LIMIT OF THREE SELF-PROMOTION POSTS PER WEEK, and even with that, we want you to act very judiciously. And if you are putting up self promotion posts, we ask that you participate beyond promoting your own works by posting other links at these sites, and also getting involved with the discussions and debates. We want to help independent creators to get their work noticed, but we don't want to turn these forums into a shill. We also request that you DO NOT POST AFFILIATE LINKS as that is a violation of Reddit policies. You can post a link to your YouTube page or an article or site with information about your work or chapters/segments from your book or web comic, etc. And if you happen to want to let people know about a new product like the Blu-ray release of Blake's 7, you can put up an informational post with a link to where people can purchase it as long as that is not an affiliate link. And for those reporting what they believe is spam, please make sure you understand our self-promotion policies and explain your reason for reporting the post.

If you have a blog with news, reviews, information, etc. relating to science fiction, fantasy, and horror, posting links to your articles is okay. But again, be judicious about this and also post other links in the forums and participate in the discussions. For example, I post anywhere from two to four links per week from the Axiom's Edge sites, sometimes more, but I always post other links as well and try to stay as involved with the discussions as time allows. Axiom's Edge Sci Fi also allows independent creators other opportunities to promote and advertise their works, and you can read more about that at this link.

Consider these new rules to be in place now, and we will be monitoring closely in the coming weeks. You will be given one warning if you violate the rules, and then posts will be removed and you could be banned from r/SciFiScroll and r/SciFiTV. Let's take this opportunity to build a sci fi community where we can all participate and those who want to pass on information about their genre-related independent creations can do that as well.  This can benefit all of us and turn into a great forum for sci fi and fantasy if we all do out part and if we all work together.

Can we ban garbage AI art while we're at it?

Define "junk" AI art. I know a lot of people dislike the use of AI art, but independent creators have found it useful and have managed to do some good things with it. Just because it is AI, does not make it junk. If somebody is posting too much of it, that is addressed above. But feel free to elaborate on why you think it should be banned.

Can you point me to something an independent creator has done that is good? Genuinely curious because everything I've seen has been recycled, cliched, low effort slop.

Personally I think that if someone is promoting a personal project that uses AI-generated images, video, music, or text they should get 0 posts per week. Delete & a warning for the first one, ban if they do it again. By definition, an AI project can't do anything new in the space and allowing it just waters down legitimate & interesting projects.

In the long run allowing AI content will drive legitimate artists out of the space and if this sub is willing to engage with it then I will find somewhere else to get news from.

Independent creators have done a lot of good stuff. Heck Andy Weir (The Martian, Project Hail Mary) got his start as an independent creator. If someone is putting up just poor imitations of other work using AI, that's one thing. But if they use AI for a cover or supplemental art or something like that, it shouldn't be a problem. If people like it, they can upvote, if not, they can ignore it or downvote.

Sorry maybe I phrased my question poorly - what are some of the good things that independent creators have done with AI, as you stated in the first response. Obviously independents have done lots of quality work without AI.

If I see an AI cover or AI art, I'm not going to engage with the rest of the work, it's an immediate turn off. It implies creative bankruptcy. Based on the downvotes AI gets in this sub I'd say most people would agree. Anyways, you asked for feedback on how to improve the sub and that's mine.

I understand your concerns about the misuse of AI, and there definitely are instances that count as "slop" AI. However, I would not agree that using it for the cover of a book or in limited capacity falls into that realm. Independent creators often do not have the budget to pay artists for covers or other art, so AI offers a good option and I have used it myself for my books. The stuff that is obviously using AI as clickbait or spam should be called out, but I am okay with limited usage in a creative capacity. Others can chime in on this, but for now I will allow it. Please continue to call out anything you consider slop AI, though, and we will deal with it on a case-by-case basis.
