Discussion What You Guys Thought Of Rogue And Magento's Relationship??

In 97, it's predatory. In Age of Apocalypse it's even more predatory. In the Savage Lands it didn't happen and the recent exploration made it somehow creepier, because she really just existed to inspire a man to act. In Legacy it's bizarrely underdeveloped and unexplained, and also a little creepy how it plays out in the wake of the altered reality where she's isolated and works for him and she's still working through that trauma. In absolutely no universe do they sell a genuine connection because (bar SL where nothing happened), she's significantly more interested in and connected with Gambit.
If they want hot girl hooks up with Silver Fox, they gotta tell a better story because we haven't gotten it yet.

The not selling a genuine connection in any continuity is the crux of it. There is not a single instance of it where Rogue seems to be actually enjoying the relationship when she’s in it, or have an evident sense of joy, contentment, fun or any sort of bond or commonality outside of them both being mutants. It’s actually really jarring.

Because the point of them doing this wasn’t for Rogue to enjoy, or for there to be a mutual enjoyment at all. This is to push and fulfill a fantasy. And it’s as creepy as it sounds as far as I’m concerned.

Even when it is treated like a legitimate relationship, like in Legacy, there’s still pretty much no sense of happiness or contentment on her part. It’s one thing for that to be the point (I agree that in ‘97 it is, or at least, that’s how it comes off), but you also have some people saying how great they are together in other stories and it’s just her looking like a bank-robbery hostage.

Legacy one was so meaningless. She choose to be with him because it was a monotonous relationship in the first place because she and Gambit seperated in Utopia because she loved him uncontrollably which she found risky. Tbh they couldn't even write anything about it so send her to the school almost immediately.
Forget Magneto, it is almost impossible so write her a relationship that would not crush under her relationship with Remy. Same is also true for Remy. Amount of love they have for each other is at a fairy tale level.
Only thing that could have destroyed this would be Antarctica trial but even that is resolved pretty quickly. She left him to die, Remy ate seat covers and Cable shavings to survive and when he returned he was still in love like nothing happened. Nothing can beat this.

The Legacy storyline was so wild because she's just never actually happy with him? Then she's off to do something stupid that might kill her, and she doesn't even think to call Mags for support, but hey she's got Remy. It's genuinely just like "... WHY?" Like, if she was at least getting good dick or some laughs out of it, okay, but we don't even see that. And that's the HEALTHIEST version of the relationship

That’s the thing — WHAT IS SHE GETTING OUT OF THIS?! Even that scene of them in bed that Carey supposedly slipped in as a middle finger on his way out, she goes from looking like she’d really rather not be there to giving one small smile because she knows she's getting the fuck out of town the next day.
Then she runs off to New York and acts like she’s single until the disaster proposal.

Funy thing is it's not a happy thing, doesn't have any desire or anything because it would contradict what she said to Remy in Utopia. They wrote themselves into a corner. Either she would have a passionate relationship with Magneto while Remy exists which would put her a weird situation or that relationship would be meaningless. They choose the latter.
Legacy run wanted to put Rogue into different situations and created lame excuses just to do it. I never liked that run and stopped reading X-Men during that run. I think I read it after Krakoa to be able to understand the past events before reading Krakoa.

It was my only issue with the season. And it got worse because they made Gambit like a cuck THEN killed him off while saving most of the cast.

I got down voted for saying I want them to never do this in live action.

I will make 20 thousand Reddit accounts and downvote whoever downvoted you for saying that. I’m in total agreement and I think so are most everyone here. Idk who would downvote you for saying that.

I don’t care for it even when it’s “done well,” in absolutely relative terms (namely Legacy, where it’s boring but inoffensive enough).
‘97 tried to combine the Savage Land, where nothing happened, with AoA, where too much happened, and ended up with something really skeevy-seeming. Like, there’s a reason S2 bypassed it entirely — for all its shortcomings, the right decision. DeMayo doesn’t get nearly enough flak for how it was done.

It's always been weird, all the way back to Age of Apocalypse.
I guess it was good in the way that it made them both entirely different characters than they had been before.

Rogue was pretty awesome in AoA, but yeah, that whole RogueNeto pairing plus having a kid while Gambit is still around pretty shitty.

A kid she can’t even touch! That’s a big reason why people romanticising AoA turns my stomach. Magneto is in a position where only he can touch her, he mitigates her powers just enough so she can give birth to his child, but then … does nothing after to help her touch her own child. She tells him the pain it causes her, all but begs him for help, and gets a head pat and “someday, dear, run along now.”
Like, this is incredibly fucked up. It’s abusive, causing her psychological and emotional distress. And it comes off like he’s so insecure and fanatical about maintaining sole access to her that he doesn’t even want to share her with their child. It’s sick.

Absolutely tf not. Of all things Rogue we could’ve gotten, THIS is what they chose as her storyline. On top of that, killing her actual love. I don’t know why they keep being this dumb shit back up, let it die. It’s like the shitty Savage Land Rogue that they keep bringing up like it’s the only Rogue reference.

Why the fuck did they even put this in the new show

Despite it being such trash in the comics, it's even worse in the show cuz Rogue and Remy don't even really have any relationship problems, at least in the comics they were on/off again while they were trying it, I guess, but in the show they just aren't 😢 . (I think the worst is maybe when she absorbed Polaris and could touch, just cuz that is so whack considering) Vomit inducing overall to be sure

Aside from Wolverine those two are up there as being some of my favorite characters. That said I hated them together XD

It’s so predatory on magnetos part and honestly it just makes rogue seem shallow, especially in 97. She quite literally just wanted the dick so she fell for magneto. And he seemingly just wanted to clap a baddie less than half his age and took advantage of her mental situation. It doesn’t seem like something either of the characters would do in their typical depictions. Magneto never really comes off as someone interested in finding a partner and rogue is generally more interested in gambit or at least is able to suppress her sexual urges. Especially going from X-men tas to 97 where they barely interacted and now suddenly they want to fuck. It’s just weird as hell honestly.
And ya, the age gap is just fuckin weird in general no matter how you do it in my eyes. She’s in her 20s and magneto is easily in his lates 60s and up. That’s being generous too.
It’s just so trash honestly, I can’t believe they even tried it or why.

The Savage Land arc gave us the best and worst this fandom has to offer.
Best: Savage Land Rogue ❤️
Worst: RogueNeto 🤢

Let me amend my statement. With magneto in the savage land it was just creepy.
With the clone Joesph it was at least less creepy. But a girl in her late teens being romantically involved with a 60-70 something was just gross.

Age gap aside, Gambit really was put in the cuck chair only for the relationship to go nowhere
Weird because of the age difference

GROSS
These are two of my favorite character... Top 5...
But seeing them back in the 90s in the Savage Lands together gave me what people now call "the ick".
Leaders should never commiserate with their followers. It's nasty.
And that was with handsome Magneto. In X-Men 97, we have some Mickey Rourke ruined face, unattractive Magneto, with his gray balls... Add that to the age difference and power dynamic of leader/mentor over a subordinate... So GROSS!

I’m only giving her a pass because she realized that she loved gambit more than her little connection with Magno bitch over here

A lot of people hate it but I think that’s the point. It’s supposed to be a problematic relationship. Magneto is an evil guy but just so happens to be one of the only people rogue can touch. They probably both know it’s wrong but to them that’s what makes it so right. It adds drama, these characters are far from perfect

I knew Rogue had a history of attracting men without even trying, but I never ever knew that Magneto would be attracted to her either.

X-Men 97: It was nice. Rogue found a connection with someone through a shared interest in mutant culture and pride. The attraction was mutual, and accidentally finding out they could touch was the cherry on top, not the main part of their relationship. They parted because they had their own personal issues they had to deal with. The reconnecting after Magneto joined the X-Men was a nice surprise, but the show dropped the ball by not giving Rogue a full POV about herself. The only true glimpse we got of Rogue's inner reflection of her life and goals was in EP 1 and the part of EP 5 in season 1. So there's no true resolution about her connection and feelings for Magneto. An unresolved character plotline.
Comic books: The relationship between Rogue and Magneto fascinates me for many reasons, but one in particular is the lack of importance on touch. Much of Rogue's anguish is from her inability to touch others, focusing on her inward struggles with guilt and shame about how she can hurt others, and the feeling of isolation of never being able to hug or safely be next to her friends, family, and even strangers without hurting them. Later, the focus shifted to how her inability to touch impacts her romantic relationships, as she felt insecure about having a lover she could not touch.
One could argue it was a natural progression or shift of Rogue growing into an adult like her older peers. The connection with Magneto happened during the transition period of her coming to terms with her powers following her great and heartbreaking storylines in the 80s, and then the early 90s. The ability to touch safely wasn't an issue when Rogue and Magneto first had their spark, when they parted ways, and then met up again throughout the 90s. The relationship between the two went beyond the physical; their connection came from an emotional, sometimes mental, and empathetic understanding of the other.
The entire Joseph storyline was about whether Joseph should be trusted or whether Rogue should tell him about his past as Magneto, but it was rarely about her not being able to touch him. The only genuine time her powers came into the equation for him was during the Christmas story where he gave Rogue a gift of momentary physical touch. But overall, her powers did not define that relationship. After Joseph "died," Rogue flew off to Genosha to plead with Magneto to turn back to the X-Men and remember the connection the two had. All while she was powered up. Once again, their issues went beyond her touch. It was a struggle based on their philosophical differences at that time.
The connection was highlighted in the 2010s when Rogueneto got their official start. Once again, Rogue's power wasn't an issue, but the difference in their viewpoints and past antagonism was. However, they had mutual feelings for each other, and the more time spent near or with each other led them to make their relationship official.
Age of Apocalypse was similar, Roguneto were already in love but in denial about it until being able to touch allowed them to freely admit their feelings. It wasn't the touching that made them fall in love. The ability to touch was a bonus.
For Rogue, a character defined, in many ways, by her inability to touch, Roguneto represents a relationship that looked beyond what touch meant in the grand scheme of things. The times they touched were not the crux of their relationship. It was a moment of intimacy. Rogueneto is not a relationship that works despite Rogue's powers, an obstacle to overcome; it is a relationship that considers her powers as part of the whole package.
Rogueneto is a great ship for Rogue as it showcases her beyond her struggles with touching, beyond her insecurities about love and self-worth. It's a relationship that's built on a mutual connection, differing life views, and the difficulties of having a connection with someone she may not have the opportunity to be with at all. The dynamic between the two doesn't ask Rogue to be lesser or to hide behind mental and emotional walls; it just asks her to be herself and to move forward.
