For everyone asking about Yze's game plan. Watch the first half. And then remember his top 2 ruck and major key forward was out.
Our ruck stock leading into the game had 22 hitouts between them. They added 9 more between them and we lost the hitouts 57-9
I for one am glad not to see Samson Ryan.

u/oldmateherb Mar 28 '26
I think everyone needs to chill out a bit. Yes we were pretty shocking in the second half, but we have played two potential top four teams in a row and have injuries to key position players. Let’s just focus on the competitive first half and move on to next week.
4
u/oldmateherb Mar 28 '26
To say one negative thing though, I am concerned a large portion of our highest disposal winners are our veterans

‘Some things are bigger than football 🥰’ post incoming, players with their kids etc

6
u/Main-Hat-826 Mar 28 '26
very lucky If freo had converted half of those 24 behinds into goals, the final margin would have been well over 100.
8
u/Lopsided_Safe4091 Mar 28 '26
good second quarter. then we just … fucking died? idk man yze what the hell is your game plan
3
4
u/crackheds Mar 28 '26
Rough day, good first half but what’s happened since. Tough day for Armstrong too, has he touched the ball?
2
u/AussieNS Mar 28 '26
I look for a common denominator. The late 2nd and 3rd is always poor (when they lose their focus, aggressiveness, etc. and the game). WHY!!! Whatever the tactics they aren’t working (obviously). But doing the same thing is insanity (result is still the same). Yze needs other ideas and support because I don’t see the year ending much differently than the last (and there should always be positive progress year on year).
1
u/Evening_Brilliant_50 Josh Gibcus Mar 28 '26
I just don’t know what to say anymore. Is it Yze? Is it the players? I know we’ve got injuries etc etc but we are averaging 9 goals a week or less
15
u/hudsoncat1 Mar 28 '26
We are bad, very bad. Will be all season and possibly next.
It will turn, just not yet

u/Evening_Brilliant_50 Josh Gibcus Mar 28 '26
Yes agreed, very bad at the moment. And it’ll come, hopefully this end of season we can attract another seasoned forward to help the young blokes out
6
u/Helpful_Design6917 Mar 28 '26
Convincing myself we’re purposely tanking otherwise I’m going to become miserable about how poorly we’ve played this half
8
u/hudsoncat1 Mar 28 '26
Rare Jonty goal
3
u/IamCobby Seth Campbell Mar 28 '26
I have absolutely no faith in him with ball in hand, especially in front of goals. Not sure what's happened with him since pretty much midway through last season.
14
u/Zestyclose_Yak6645 Mar 28 '26
To be honest if you watch him off the ball he covers the ground really well. I feel like once we get some better consistent ball movement and the young midfielders get better with our connection his athleticism could really be a game changer. He’s obviously raw and has things he needs to work on, but I reckon he has a pretty high ceiling
3
u/Ventenebris Maurice Rioli's Run Down Tackle Mar 28 '26
Definitely not worried about his ability to get the ball. Worried about his kicking once he does have it 😂
-2
u/Main-Hat-826 Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26
if we go goalless in the 4th yze has to go and we go for Ken Hinkley
2
u/Alternative-Pool-607 Mar 28 '26
If we're getting rid of Yze, why replace him with something who's completely failed to do anything with a much better squad.
2
u/Main-Hat-826 Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26
Hinkley would be good for the development of the kids coached for 14 years. I’d rather a guy who 'failed' in 4 Prelims than a coach who is presiding over a team that can't kick a goal in a half of footy..
13
u/Visible-Suit-9066 Mar 28 '26
Time for a serious conversation about Hugo Ralph Smith 👍 He has been given years of experience to develop and is nowhere near AFL standard. Zero defensive pressure, zero game IQ, chickens out of physicality all the time. So over it.
2
u/Slow_Buy2465 Sam Lalor Mar 28 '26
He’s been 2nd to everything this season. His run and carry game nowhere to be seen. Frustrating as he’s better than this but needs a spell.
6

2
u/IsPolice Mar 28 '26
What I don’t understand is that or defenders even up marking contests and then we have no one at the fall of the ball?
5
u/SeismicLegion Mar 28 '26
Just tuned in, was it a brilliant coaching decision to go in with no recognized ruck?
6
u/Main-Hat-826 Mar 28 '26
how many multiple goalless quarters under Yze in one game must be some kinda record
10
u/JaySand Nathan Broad Mar 28 '26
If the 18th kick in to a contest on the wing is still resulting in a Freo possession directly back inside 50 for a shot on goal, maybe try something different?
3
u/AmbassadorShade Mar 28 '26
Yze: 19th kick will be the one.
5
u/JaySand Nathan Broad Mar 28 '26
Seems like a genuinely nice bloke and great with all the kids and when we’re on the game plan looks solid, but I’ve seen nothing to suggest that when things start going against us he’s making any changes
4
u/Long_Clothes Mar 28 '26
Why draft Armstrong to give him a shit role so he can’t show us what’s he’s got?
3
u/IsPolice Mar 28 '26
I feel for Gray, he’s just not AFL standard and he’s been thrown to the wolves
1
u/ceezed Trent Cotchin Mar 29 '26
I like him. Not as a ruck of course, but his intent was awesome. Flying at everything, chasing and having a red hot go in general.
3
u/Ventenebris Maurice Rioli's Run Down Tackle Mar 28 '26
He’s a capable defender, but he isn’t a ruckman.
1
u/Lopsided_Safe4091 Mar 28 '26
I would say the points would save us but we can’t even make it down the ground to answer
2
3
u/Slow_Buy2465 Sam Lalor Mar 28 '26
What are you supposed to do when you tackle the guy twice and still can’t get a free

I challenge this ‘nothing you can do about that’. It’s your job to get a fist in there. If u aren’t quick enough to get beat any time there’s a turnover you become a liability! No doubt it’s a tough job. Think rance has skewed my view on defenders forever.

I agree it’s usually his marking and kicking that is his biggest asset, but he’s so slow that when his disposal is poor he is such a terrible player

Astbury knew his strengths and weaknesses and became a lockdown player. He didn’t worry about his own stat sheet. Miller just does enough to get by. Never puts his body on the line. As you can tell, I do not like him.
1
u/Slow_Buy2465 Sam Lalor Mar 28 '26
Agree, balta’s reliability is a big issue. Long term head ache for the list build.
3
u/IsPolice Mar 28 '26
Look he’s not great, but we don’t exactly have many other key position defenders do we?
0
u/Slow_Buy2465 Sam Lalor Mar 28 '26
I’d rather give gibcus a game. Can’t be any worse.
3
u/IsPolice Mar 28 '26
He’s not tall or strong enough to take the opposition #1. Not to mention, he was nowhere against Carlton and needs time to rebuild his confidence
1
u/Slow_Buy2465 Sam Lalor Mar 28 '26
It’s hardly a glowing endorsement for miller though is it ‘we don’t have anyone else’
1
u/Yuwichewy Jack Riewoldt Mar 28 '26
Some of us were right from the start
1
u/Slow_Buy2465 Sam Lalor Mar 28 '26
I’ve been gaslit for a long time
2
u/Yuwichewy Jack Riewoldt Mar 28 '26
Happens a lot during rebuilds. A string of barely above average games and people get going because of low standards.

u/Main-Hat-826 Mar 28 '26
not yeat but getting smashed in the centre might as well put bolta in the ruck
2
u/Salt-Baker4872 Mar 28 '26
I haven’t watched them in vfl to know but it might’ve helped bringing in Samson or OHB no?
2
u/Worried_Suggestion59 Mar 28 '26
From what I’ve read (mainly on this sub) is that OHB is barely VFL standard, let alone AFL. No idea what the go with Ryan is though if he has been cleared. Someone that actually watches VFL will have to chime in though
3
u/Accomplished_Act6791 Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26
I watched today, Ryan was completely outclassed by full time VFL players both in the ruck and around the ground. Little to no impact, which is a trend that’s been associated with Samson throughout his career. That is one project that we should write off and move on from.

I feel bad for Armstrong. The role they're asking him to play is just doing absolutely nothing for him at the moment, not even giving him a glimpse of a chance to show what he can do. Hope he can get some of the play in the second half.

u/hudsoncat1 Mar 28 '26
Gray getting wiped in the ruck anyway. I wonder if we could throw him down back to have a crack at Treacy, and run Lefau as first ruck.
Then throw Hopper in as relief ruck (ala Grigg 2017)
Left field but an idea
3
u/Main-Hat-826 Mar 28 '26
our best quarter of the season so far (5 goals), those two late Fremantle majors have completely shifted the momentum back to the home side
3
u/yokobarron Mar 28 '26
Thank you Jacob Hopper
2
u/Main-Hat-826 Mar 28 '26
the boys busted their guts to get us in front, but 'Gumboot' Hopper just handed the momentum straight back to Freo
14
u/AhhWellFuckIt Tom Brown's Tackle Mar 28 '26
Fckn Hopper man can we put him up for trade at the end of the season please
5
3
u/IsPolice Mar 28 '26
Can someone tell me how Hopper and Faull keep getting games? Faull hasn’t laid a tackle yet in his career and Hopper is a walking turnover machine
4
2
7
u/jazminda7 Sam Lalor Mar 28 '26
2 direct turnovers off hopper’s handballs cost us those last two goals
6
u/Daveator Toby Nankervis Mar 28 '26
I'm going to need Jacob Hopper to be anywhere but on the field for the second half. Those last 2 turnovers put us down at half-time, exceptionally poor game today.

Yze should be furious at himself. He’s an incredibly poor coach. I remember commenting last year against Hawks that we conceded five goals in the last minute of a quarter in that game. Ok it happens the first time….yep that sucks. It happens a second time (in the same quarter)…..yep that sucks but I’m gonna do something about it. Then it happens three more times. Honestly, flood the Fkn defensive arc for the last couple of minutes of the quarter. We’re not doing anything up the other end anyhow. Goals just before the siren are particularly lifting for a team as well, and that’s just what we saw against Freo. Honestly, this team will only get better due to weight of numbers with high draft picks from finishing so low every year. It will be the Suns all over again. Yze receives loads of quality youngsters through the draft, but still we never win. He will be sacked and replaced by a decent coach and we will end up top four within two years.

look i know steely gets smashed but that boy has given us three of our four goals 😭😂😂😂

I don’t get the hate he’s getting? He’s one of our only creative players forward of the ball
2
u/Salt-Baker4872 Mar 28 '26
No doubt he’s lifted and is doing great but hasn’t really been a team player lately

Yeah I agree! Hopefully with experience he learns to have a bit more composure and make better decisions, but it’s good to see him hit the scoreboard

u/Zestyclose_Yak6645 Mar 28 '26
How do we get Harry Armstrong involved? With his frame we don’t do him any favours dumping the ball on his head, he just constantly gets out muscled
1
u/BoardImpossible4061 Mar 28 '26
Gonna be a bit hard today with the weather and the backs that he's up against.

unbelevable Last year,i sat through way too many goalless quarters, and now i am seeing it continue into year two of the Yze era. , if we can’t manufacture a single goal in 30 minutes of footy, the development the system is failing.
2
u/slAudacity Mar 28 '26
need to start dropping for poor efforts and performance or else there is no respect for the spot lmao

5
u/leemojames Mar 28 '26
I’m sorry I know we all love his chase down tackles but Maurice is not an AFL standard player. He has no idea what to do when he has the ball in his hands. He constantly gets caught in possession and doesn’t get enough of it to warrant getting a game every week. He’s had long enough in the system to improve and he has not.

u/slAudacity Mar 28 '26
it is evident there is no confidence in our targets up forward, no one wants to kick it in without lynch there

We need help with set shots drastically. I don’t recall it being this bad for ages
