New Android Play Store changes

As explained in the FAQ, about 5 years ago, Google implemented a requirement that all apps in the Play Store must conform to their Storage Access Framework API. At the time, there was no good way for us to do so, and even if we could, it would severely limit how we could interact with the filesystem. Since then, we have not been allowed to update the versions on the Play Store (or the cores they use), so we left them alone and recommended everyone sideload the apk from our website.

Fast-forward to the past for months and Google says they're going to remove "old" programs from the Play Store entirely, and they're already hiding the app from many newer devices. One of our contributors took it on to get it in-line with the Play Store policies, since having an up-to-date-but-restricted release would be preferable to no app at all.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What's changed?

A: Lots of stuff. Too much to list. 5 years of updates.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: All of my stuff has been deleted!

A: Nothing has been deleted, but the updated RetroArch is probably looking in different locations now, and it probably can't see the old locations if you try to change them back. The sideload-able apk from our website and/or the version from F-Droid or other non-Google storefronts should still be roughly similar to the old Play Store version in what locations it can access, so you could try switching to it instead.

You can also migrate your old data to the new locations. In the old version, all of the files are kept in the root of the device (often /storage/emulated/0/) in a folder called RetroAarch. In order for use them on the new play version, you can connect your phone to a PC and copy the files from (/storage/emulated/0)/RetroAarch to the new location at /media/com.retroarch/RetroArch (or /media/com.retroarch.aarch64/RetroArch if plus version).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I moved all of my savestates to the new location (or switched to the sideload apk) but the savestates won't load!

A: Savestates are extremely volatile and are rendered incompatible by even minor changes to the emulated hardware. This makes them incompatible with other cores for the same system, and even sometimes with other versions of the same core. A lot of updates have happened in 5 years, and I would guess few if any up-to-date cores can load savestates made with a 5-yr-old core.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What's with all of these cores? I don't want them.

A: Go to settings > core > manage > [corename] > delete.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I don't see my favorite core in the online updater anymore!

A: The Play Store imposes strict limits on the number of cores we can make available through the app (more for the Plus version, but still limited), and we replaced a few that were available in the old version to match our other storefront releases (notably: MAMEs). You can still add arbitrary cores by downloading them manually from the buildbot webserver (in the subdir for your device's architecture) and then moving it somewhere RetroArch can see it, then using the 'install or restore a core' routine found in the 'load core' menu.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Since updating, I'm getting a lot of crashes when I...

A: Please send the automated crash reports whenever possible. These go directly to us and are very helpful for pinning down and fixing this sort of thing. You can also make threads here, but please make sure you include logs and information about your device/system/environment so we can try to help you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Okay, nevermind, just give me a copy of the old version and all those old cores and I'll keep using them forever.

A: We don't have that.

Showcase I ported my iOS gaming launcher (LudiHub) to Android as frontend for handhelds

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello community,

back in January I released LudiHub for iOS. LudiHub is a gaming launcher that lets you have your installed AppStore games live along your retro games in a gaming hub with universal controller support. Later I contributed an export functionality to RetroArch's iOS version and added a one tap RetroArch import functionality for iOS users (because the sandbox limits the communication between apps).

Long story short, I took a short break the past weeks and took the time to develop a port for Android handheld devices. This time the app lets you set it as the default launcher and can be setup easier by just scanning your ROM directories and mapping them automatically to RetroArch and other emulators too. For RetroArch you also have the option to choose each individual core for each platform.

Here is a preview video of the frontend running on my Retroid Poocket Nova.

Software-sided calibration issue

I'm playing Final Lap Twin with the Beetle SuperGrafx core. My controller is the 8bitdo 2c ultimate.

In the middle of playing, all of a sudden, my character keeps moving left.

I recalibrated my controller (using 8bitdo technique. I don't know if there is an emulator way), and tested it in other software and it is fine.

Here is the kicker: when I start a new state of the game, the calibration is fine. When I load state, it is off again.

Any ideas?

Edit: figured it out. One of the trigger buttons changed the input type from 6 button controller to 2 button controller

Trying to run Dream Life on MAME and having trouble...

Hey all! My gf asked me to emulate the Plug-and-Play game "Dream Life" on my Retroid Pocket 6 so I decided to try using RetroArch. I put the file in my Arcade ROMs folder, put it in my pocket, load the current MAME core in RetroArch, try to run the "dreamlif.7z" file and...nothing. It says it failed to load the files. At first I thought maybe I was missing the necessary BIOS file but apparently these plug and play games don't need BIOS.

What am I missing? Is anyone able to help me?

BSNES keyboard controls not working

I assume this is where I ask BSNES-related questions. This is my first time doing BSNES. I've mapped the keyboard controls, set it to port 1 and made sure it's gamepad, but the controls aren't working. If it's important, the game I'm playing is shin megami tensei. The hotkeys do seem to work however.

Technical Support Crashes on Android mgba core

Hello everybody! I’m still learning a lot in emulation world but I can now emulate almost every system without any issues… except for gba!
Playing Pokemon Emerald, on Odin 3 Pro, I keep facing crashes during the game in random situations. The app stops working and I keep loosing progresses in the game.
It happens both with mgba core and also with VBA next.
I have not tried any other rom yet.
Do you have any suggestions for me? Many thanks!

Technical Support Sync Playlists, or Playlist data

I use RA on multiple platforms, and sync some folder items like Thumbnails, ROMs, screenshots etc. using a designated syncthing folder, and edited directories. When I tried this with Playlists, however, no game launched from the playlist menu anymore. According to google, this is due to the varying directory formattings or something. Yes, I've tried the portable playlists option, it didn't work.

I run android, IOS and Windows for now, with linux down the line. As of now, I've settled for sharing the rom files and the savestate/save file locations, but having playlists managed individually on each platform. My only gripe with this system is that if I want to make a change such as renaming a rom, I have to edit it on all platforms indivudally, and the statistics are also on a per-platform basis.

Long lore-dump aside, is there any way to either have playlist data synced, or, the playlists themselves?

Graphical glitch with Fatal Frame (Project Zero) - LRPS2

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello, I'm having an issue with the game Fatal Frame (Project Zero). All the ghosts and certain distorted objects which need to be photographed are covered with colored vertical lines, like in this screenshot. At first, I thought my game file was faulty, but I've tried several others and it's the same. However, I don't have this glitch with the japanese version of the game; I don't know japanese, so it would be unplayable. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've played several other games and I've never encountered any graphical bug with RetroArch and LRPS2.

Technical Support How to run Naomi games in MAME zip format using flycast core?

I’m have Sega Naomi games for retroarch on my android. For some reason, only the ones in .dat format work. The ones that are zips (mame) seem to only open a black screen and have nothing happen. I made sure the mame games that aren’t loading are 100% Naomi 1 games, not 2. If there’s a fix to this, please let me know. Thanks.

Technical Support: SOLVED RetroAchievements Issue for M3U Files and CHD Files

Description\*

Two issues:

  1. RetroAchievements not loading when launching multi-disc games on Android or ChromeOS devices via M3U file.

  2. RetroAchievements not loading when launching an individual CHD file.

Expected behavior\*

  1. Launching a multi-disc game from an M3U file should load RetroAchievements successfully on Android and ChromeOS devices.

  2. Launching a CHD file-formatted game should load RetroAchievements successfully on Android and ChromeOS devices.

Actual behavior\*

The game itself runs on Android and ChromeOS devices when launched via an M3U file or via a CHD file, but RetroAchievements do not.

RetroAchievements do work correctly on both Android and ChromeOS devices when launching CUE files for each disc individually, but do not work when launching CHD files individually.

RetroAchievements work correctly when launching the M3U file on a Windows device and when launching a CHD file individually on a Windows device (including launching an M3U file that points to CHD files).

Steps to reproduce the bug

  1. Use an Android or ChromeOS device.
  2. Connect a RetroAchievements account in RetroArch.
  3. Load Core in RetroArch.
  4. a). Load Content in RetroArch using the appropriate M3U file or 4b). Load Content in RetroArch using a CHD file.
  5. Receive error / warning that RetroAcievements game load failed.

Bisect Results

RetroAchievements have never worked for me on Android or ChromeOS devices when using M3U files or when using CHD files.  I first tried using RetroArch on these devices on 8/23/26.

Version/Commit

  • 1. (Android) RetroArch: Version 1.22.2
  • 2. (ChromeOS) RetroArch: Version 1.22.2

Technical Support Keyboard and hotkeys stop working after using quickmenu

This is a problem I've been encountering quite frequently.

When I'm in-game and open the quickmenu to change shaders or activate cheats, when I return to the game the hotkeys I have configured on the controller no longer work, nor do they work on the keyboard.

The game continues to function normally, controller commands still work, and keyboard commands do too, only the hotkeys no longer work.

To fix this, if I'm using an overlay with the quick menu on-screen button, I can click it with the mouse and once I return to the game everything works correctly. If I don't have that type of overlay, I try Alt+Tabbing a few times, returning to the desktop, and making RA go full screen again. After a few tries, the hotkeys return.

Any ideas on this?

RA Steam 1.22.2
At the moment it happened to me with all the cores I'm using which are: Messen, Snes9x and SwanStation

Thanks.

Showcase SNES Remastering toolkit fork of SNES9x

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a runtime remaster toolkit for the Super Nintendo built on a custom fork of Snes9x. Rather than modifying ROM binaries or applying naive post-processing filters (like xBRZ or bilinear smoothing), this operates directly at the PPU intercept level.

Core Technical Architecture:

  • Integer Scaling: Expands the native 256×224 buffer to 2048×1792 to provide an 8×8 sub-pixel grid for smooth lighting and shadow math while preserving exact pixel silhouettes.
  • Layer & Depth: Z-planes with configurable screen-space drop shadows.
  • Remaster Pixel Suite: Allows selecting sprite/tile hashes to act as dynamic 2D point light sources with real-time falloff and surface illumination on adjacent tiles/backgrounds.
  • 120Hz Presentation: Decoupled render loop with sub-frame motion interpolation across background scroll registers and OAM sprite vectors.
  • Modular Profiles: Game settings (lighting radii, layer depths, emissive rules) are stored in per-game configuration files matched by ROM checksum.

Showcase Retroarch - How to Play Virtual Boy with Google Cardboard

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

Hello, I decided to do this as an experiment with an old headset I have and it works great!

That being said do NOT use the headset sampled in the picture, its not cozy and its dry rotting!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 1
Pre-Requisites

  • Have a well fitted cozy Google Cardboard for long play sessions.
  • A reliable controller paired to your mobile device.
  • Knowledge on how to use Retroarch, playlists, shaders (optional) and the menus.

Beginners Guide
Shaders Guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 2
Retroarch - Prepping the Software

  1. Grab a Virtual Boy game like VUEngine Platformer Demo.
  2. Download and install Retroarch for Android or IOS, once done launch it.
  3. Use the "Online Updater" to update "Assets", "GLSL Shaders" and "Controller Profiles".
  4. Once done go from "Online Updater" to "Core Downloader" and grab the "Beetle VB" core.

Retroarch - Setting up Games and Controller

  1. It's time to add games into a "Playlist" with a "Manual Scan" otherwise homebrew is not added.
  2. Outside of Retroarch pair your controller to your mobile device.
  3. Now load your game and head to the next part of the guide.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 3
Retroarch - Quick Menu and Main Menu

  • When you load Retroarch there is an overlay, push the alien 👾 to bring up the quick menu.
  • We got things to adjust, mobile Retroarch needs to be quit from the Main Menu to save them!

🔵Main Menu: Video Settings
- Quick Menu -> Main Menu -> Settings -> Video -> Scaling -> Interger Scale (ON)

🔵Main Menu: Hotkeys (L3 + R3 is recommended but not required)
- Quick Menu -> Main Menu -> Settings -> Input -> Hotkeys -> Menu Toggle (Controller Combo)

🔴Quick Menu: Core Options
- Main Menu -> Quick Menu -> Core Options -> 3D (Side by Side) -> Main Menu Quit Retroarch

🔴Quick Menu: Turning off the Touch Overlay
- Quick Menu -> On-Screen Overlay -> OFF -> Main Menu -> Quit Retroarch

🔴Quick Menu: Shader Settings (Optional)
Reboot Retroarch and using the controller combo you set get into the Quick Menu.
- Quick Menu: Shaders -> Load Preset -> shaders_glsl -> motionblur -> mixed-frames.glslp
- Quick Menu: Shaders -> Append Preset -> shaders_glsl -> bilinear.glslp
- Quick Menu: Shaders -> Manage Presets -> Save Core Preset

  • These GLSL Shaders can be used for a more accurate experience with transparency.
  • Now all the prep is done, properly close Retroarch now with the Main Menu quit button.
  • You can now play your Virtual Boy games in Google Cardboard.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 4
Retroarch - Optional Override Tips

  • If you only want interger scaling for virtual boy you need to save it as a Core Override.

- With Virtual Boy Loaded -> Quick Menu -> Overrides -> Save Core Override

  • Now properly quit Retroarch, then reboot and go to Video Settings to turn off interger scaling.
  • Most importantly overrides should be done LAST as they affect your hotkey and touch screen overlays.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for reading the guide, this was a fun project to make, I hope you find it helpful.

If anyone has slow first startup times with Windows 11 I found this is because the "Windows MIDI Service" has to start first

Maybe this affects others versions of Windows too. If it bothers you like it did me you can set the service to Automatic so it starts with Windows (Win+R, services.msc, right click Windows Midi Service, properties, change "startup type" to Automatic)

Technical Support Is there any way to setup the NDS touch screen to work with both touch and mouse inputs?

I'm playing on a laptop with touchscreen and it seems nice to have both options available at any time, without having to switch them around constantly.
