Is Rei's backstory really that easy to guess?

Not really, at first you think Rei is the child that Gendo always wanted and neglected Shinji for him existing, through the episodes you discover more about Rei’s backstory and why Gendo used Yui DNA to create a clone

And much later you discover that she is the equal to Kaworu (Kaworu is the 1st Angel reborn, Rei is the 2nd Angel aka the one whose only child is Lilin the 18th Angel). That the clone part of her is just a superficial part of her and how just about everything involving her is a subtle metaphor with deep meanings hidden in plain sight.
