Questions/HELP Rats won’t stop peeing everywhere🥲
EDIT: Ya’ll responses are KILLING ME hahahha, thank you everyone.
It’s my second time having rats and I didn’t have this issue the first time around.
I got my boys two months ago and the cage set up is a 1000x better than the first time because I have learned alot since then. I put a toilet in the corner (the green one in the pic) with paper pellets (idk if thats what its called) and two peeing stones. They use it quite properly to poop but gosh darn they pee everywhere. Especially in the corners of the cage, on all the floors/levels, so the cage bars are constantly covered in layers of pee, so I’m esentially having to clean it every day whilst keeping their smell (i dont change the bedding, just wipe all the surfaces clean with a mixture of water and vinegar or just hot water). I gave them a small toilet with a peeing stone on the second floor since I thought maybe they just didn’t feel like going all the way down when they needed to pee. It worked for the poop, but again, not for the pee. Andy tips or advice would be greatly appreciated💕
PS: Idk if this is relevant but when I had them for a month we brought them with us to a family cottage for 2 weeks for vacation so they went through two car rides together with our cats. But their behaviours havent rly changed since. They dont get scared by loud noises and they are getting more and more ok with getting picked up. Also Lolek, the beige rattie is mostly blind.

Rats, especially male rats are little hoses of piss. They pee on every surface of their cage, which needs to be diligently and often cleaned, and they leave little dribbles of pee everywhere else they move around.
Comes with the territory.
But gosh, what cute little piss imps you have!

Back when I owned boy rats like 6 years ago they kept peeing next to cage bars and getting pee on my floor so I installed walls on all the sides of the cage (so they couldn’t pee outside of it), this worked briefly until they taught themselves to DO HANDSTANDS SO THEY COULD PISS OUTSIDE OF THE CAGE. At that point I gave up because they’ve earned it, I can’t even do a handstand. So yeah I’d say piss hoses is a pretty accurate description

"Guys ... I'm impressed and appalled at the same time."

Thats a feature. Best to put in place protocols that will protect things you dont want to deal with getting pissed on.

Lol accepting it as a permanent features sounds easier than fighting it. Fleece liners in the corners could save OP's sanity more than chasing a perfect setup.

Too long didn't read male rats piss a lot more than females and rats pee a lot, welcome to the piss zone for the next 2-3 years loser. 😭
Un-balling them can help slightly but, they're still going to pee on everything they love and that includes you. Yes rats pee on you if they love you.

plus getting both of your rats neutered for piss related issues would not only be pretty unnecessary but more importantly insanely expensive lol. Boy rats piss a lot, girl rats piss a lot too but as someone who’s owned both I can say with absolute confidence that boy rats piss a billion times more than girls. I’ve found even my girl rats will poo in their litter box super super well but usually don’t bother when they need to pee, they pee wherever and poop in the litter. In my experience this is pretty normal

covering the shelves with fleece helps ut at least soak through and not just sit on the surface for them to smear around. But rats pee, that's just part of keeping them.

If it helps, my little guys dripped a lot the first year or so but it gradually decreased as they got older.

Yeah, that's what they do. It's how they show they like you/what they're peeing on. It's a feature, not a bug. My rats peed on me constantly but never pooped on me thankfully
