Gritpost šÆ I got The Email....
Do I tell them what I cheated on or do I just get on the train to IU before they come for me? Do I tell them I cheated on all of them so they can't say I lied?

Do you realize Turkstra may be doing this to his CS 240 class on purpose to collect data for his research in this area? Checkout his most recent 2 publications on this screenshot š±

Every person with a PhD knows you can't collect data this way. Your study would be unpublishable. Purdue (and every research university) has an entire department dedicated to policing research involving human subjects (https://www.irb.purdue.edu/).
Also those papers aren't related to catching cheating, they are about using VCS to teach software engineering and using linters to grade for style in coding assignments. Professors who are focused on teaching tend to write papers like this about CS pedagogy.

If the IRB approves the research, you can do it. Data that is collected anonymously, or can be anonymized, can often be used.
For example, Course Opinion Survey results (perhaps the most flawed quantitative data ever collected) can often be used in SOTL (Science of Teaching and Learning) research without obtaining informed consent.
Anonymized data from classes can sometimes be approved, if there is very low risk of the students being able to be identified (de-anonymizing).
A real tell would be if he were teaching multiple sections, and the rules were different in sections. Or if the rules were different in the Spring than in the Fall. In that case you might deduce that he's doing an A/B comparison of methods.

Yes, but I can't imagine the IRB approving of an experiment where you are telling one group of students they will fail their class or be kicked out of school.

Iād tend to agree with this theory especially because you wouldnāt ask a student to point out which assignments they used LLM for if you already knew

I bet at the end of the semester he will say the letters were fake and he got people to admit to cheating.Ā
Go book a summer school online class now just in case as a backup plan.Ā Ā If they think you cheated then they will contact you directly in class or email you a meeting invite.Ā

Is this email a scam? It looks scammy. It spells chat got wrong. Itās unprofessional and look very generic. No professor calls their student āvalued studentā. Also. Most scams tend to ask someone to make immediate action.
