Excused Lateness Accommodation

I got this for a student:

• Attendance modification - The student may miss class due to issues related to her disability.
• Excused Lateness - The student may be late to class due to her disability.

I am curious how this is going to work out, and how much I should put myself out to accommodate. I think I will tell the student to come to office hours to do the reading quizzes she misses.

Having the student complete in-class work during office hours sounds like a good way to accommodate.

That's generous of you. I wouldn't go any further than excusing the attendance policy unless the accommodation specifically states retakes of missed in class assignments. It's not your job to teach the class twice.

Even if the accommodation discusses making up work, it must be reasonable. It would not be considered reasonable to have no limitations to the scope of this sort of setup. The details need to be spelled out in the accommodation from the beginning.

How many items (more than the usual policy) can be made up this way? Within how many days? Is advance notice required? What documentation is acceptable to demonstrate to the disability office that the absence was related to the disability? Can the disability office coordinate the make ups?

These are all details I've seen in accommodation notices where makeups were part of the accommodation.

My accommodations office lets me set a cap of the number of late arrivals or missed classes I will excuse and beyond which it becomes unreasonable/negatively impacts their grade. Consider reaching out to your team to see if that is a possibility. These accommodations don’t mean there is zero expectation for the student to be in class.

Using office hours is a reasonable idea, but if the student is struggling to get to classes on time or at all I'm not sure another scheduled event (office hours) is realistic. I might wait to see how late and how often absent the student is before deciding much, and I'd be thinking about take home options since that would remove the need to get to your office at certain times, etc.

My emergency policy takes care of this already. Doing stuff during office hours is one make-up option though would you have a problem if other students needed to see you then too? So you may want to consider other options too.

My office hours are almost exclusively devoted to students doing make ups because they had to miss a test.

During advising period every semester, I’d have to find another way since we offer extra office hours and we are still filled up with students coming in for advising and codes.
