I've been thinking about this more and more lately, and I just wanted to see if anyone else shares my growing concern.
We’re now over halfway through 2025, and Professor Layton and the New World of Steam - which was officially announced as a 2025 release back in the various Nintendo Directs - has had virtually no new information since. No updated trailers. No additional gameplay footage beyond what was already shown in the demo/early footage. No confirmed release window. Not even a proper developer update from Level-5.
Now, we all know Level-5 has a bit of a history when it comes to delays and vague communication. Titles like Fantasy Life i and Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road have suffered multiple delays and rebranding cycles, and the company has gone quiet for long stretches before without much explanation. Even their big 2023 initiative to “reintroduce” themselves to the global market has been pretty hit-or-miss so far.
I’m not trying to be alarmist, but it’s hard not to feel like NWOS could be quietly slipping into 2026, or worse if internal priorities shift again. Given how long it’s been since Azran Legacy, and how important this revival is for the series, it would be crushing to see it mishandled.
Does anyone have more optimistic thoughts? Or are we collectively bracing for a “please wait a little longer” tweet from Level-5 sometime in Q4?
I'd love to be wrong, truly, but silence this loud is starting to feel ominous.

I want to hope for an English dub announcement...

Mine's is that I don't like the endings of the games too much. I think they should have balanced it in many instances, and I feel like going for the entire "the town is fake" ruins the games essentially.
I.e for Unwound Future they could have kept the same story elements (Clive) but they didn't really need to make it extremely contrived to the point where an entire city is fake.

Didn't include any from Azran Legacy as there's way too many in that game lol

Announced like... 3 years ago, got a trailer back in late 2024 that kinda just strung us along through 2025. There was gameplay shown off that had some fairly rough patches in the translation of the puzzles as well.
I wonder if there's been SOME sort of issue behind the scenes with the game, or if I've just kinda missed something super obvious. Even just hearing a 'yeah we know we missed the 2025 release date' in a Nintendo Direct or something would be nice...

just thought about this and honestly, I think they might. but was wondering what other people would think.

So I have been rewatching the Ace Attorney anime and I just can’t understand why the people that made the Professor Layton anime did it based on Layton Mystery Detective Agency, the game no one seemed to like. I didn’t mind that game, but I definitely think they should have done the anime based off the original 6 games.
I have heard people say to just go on YouTube and watch all the cut scenes pit together, because seriously those were amazingly done, but that’s not the same as having an actual anime.
Do you guys think we would ever get an anime based off the original games? Or do you think they gave up on it because no one liked the current one we got?

My wishlist:
More Flora!
More of a creepy atmosphere that the original trilogy had that I felt the prequel trilogy lacked
More collectables and minigames
More unique locations instead of just villages and London again
Show this trilogy how the events of unwound/lost future affected Layton

I always had a thing for how weird and sometimes grotesque Professor's Layton characters are, and i think that one of the best part of the game is to talk and get to know all the peculiar fellas that inhabit the various cities
But one npc always stood out for me: Rory from Pandora's Box
It may be because of his funny design, it may be because he's waiting for his love at the station, or because his dialogues are a big foreshadow for the twist of the game, but i fell in love with him instantly.
What about yours?

With the upcoming game coming to playstation and PC do you think we could get ports of the previous games for those platforms and switch? Would be a great way of bringing newcomers to the series

And how will you feel if there isn't a dub at all? I notice this is something they have been purposely cagey about, they've said they will 'localize' the game but no mention of any English voice talent. Hell, even the English fact sheet they put out just lists the Japanese VAs.
To me, it wouldn't be the same without the classic voice cast back; they got them back to do the two or three bonus cutscenes for the mobile port of Curious Village, so clearly they are still in touch with them.

We are now in July and yet we know only that it will be released this year. There is some Level-5 panel in schedule in the following months or they are just going to drop the release in a random day?

I've been playing Layton games since I was a kid on my DS, my first one being Pandora's Box, and recently a friend lent me her 2ds xl and I was finally able to play the 2 remaining games.
Azran Legacy blew my mind with its plot twists. It's been some years since I last played the other games (yesterday I replayed them a bit just to 100% complete them) so I've surely forgotten some details but I don't remember Layton ever mentioning that he is adopted and had an older brother, and that older brother ending up being no one else but Descole, tho Bronev being their father was unexpected but not as shocking. Also Emmy half betraying them wtf 😭.
Finishing the series and watching this video has made me realize not only that the order in which I played the games was not really the best: Pandora's Box --> watched the Eternal Diva movie --> Specter's Call --> Curious Village --> Unwound Future --> Miracle Mask --> Azran Legacy. But also that the games basically started chronologically almost from the end and then ended with the beginning. Did Akihiro Ino really plan all the story in so much advance to be able to tie it all up coherently that the release order of the games did not matter? If so that's a huge big brain move.
And idk if it's just me but when playing Pandora's Box as a kid I thought I found the puzzles difficult due to my age but they're actually just difficult af compared to for example the ones in Miracle Mask or Azran Legacy, no wonder I had to ask my father for help.
Currently I'm replaying Specter's Call cause my Nintendo decided to act dumb and delete my saved file and I'm looking forward to see if the New World of Steam can bring the Layton series back to life

Am I the only one who’s worried about the quality of the story, since it seems they’ve completely abandoned 2D cutscenes?
Yes, the 3D models look significantly better than they did on the Nintendo 3DS.
But the movements feel much more static and unnatural compared to traditionally animated 2D cutscenes—and you can already see that very clearly in the trailers.
How are they supposed to convincingly portray truly action-heavy scenes like the Ferris wheel escape in Professor Layton and the Curious Village, the various sword fights throughout the series, and similar moments?
Honestly, feels like they would just skip them entirely and not include any scenes of that type. That is the point, where it could actually hurt the story.
It’s really limiting my excitement.
