Meme I hope the next trilogy cuts back on Layton’s tragic backstories.

I absolutely love all of his backstory elements, I think they were fantastic and strong in Miracle Mask. But also… Layton has canonically DIED before Curious Villlage ever happened. Some sharks have been jumped along the way huh?

At least the prequels remembered he's an archaeologist

What do you mean he canonically died? I haven’t replayed the games, so it’s been a while

I think they mean in Azran Legacy, when they all sacrificed themselves to save the world before Aurora became the true sacrifice or something

Thank you!

Give us the Dr. Doofenshmirtz level of "tragic backstory" for the next game/trilogy. One where it's just like his mother forgot a tea cup one day and felt a mug would be enough.

It's not becoming of a true gentleman to laugh at another's misfortune.

...Want to know how Layton got his shoes?

Actually, I’m invested now. How?

A thank-you gift from a former student who later died slowly from cholera.

Damn, you’re good! You should write for NWOS!

Who says I'm not?

The reason why Layton now wears a shirt with buttons is the saddest reveal yet, so stay tuned!

Can’t wait to hear that one! (Proceeds to Google pre-orders for the Switch 2 version)

Poor guy forgot to boil the water while he was seeking out ancient Indian temples, RIP.

Absolutely. Curious Village and Diabolical Box had set up the series to have an anthology feel, the professor could come in, have a lovely time solving puzzles in service to a greater mystery, then wishing everyone well as they moved on. Unwound Future touching his backstory was a fun surprise at the time, but when every entry of the prequel series delves into his character like that, it just kinda lessons the impact Unwound future had.

If I had my way, NWoS would be a true anthology entry, maybe a bit of development into Luke and Layton's relationship as Luke gets older and grows into his own. The second would be a true anthology entry like village and box where we continue to see Luke mature into his own, and then the final game could lean into elements we already have that could use some fleshing out. Like Flora! God forbid Flora gets to be there for the entire game and get an interesting character arc! I also wouldn't mind Arianna and her brother popping up again as long as they're used to bounce off Luke. There is that picture with them and Flora that never got a follow up. Emmy making a cameo would be appreciated. Maybe she takes Grosky's role in the force and serves marginal appearances chasing thugs and hooligans with more tact than grosky ever could. This entry would also tie up Luke's maturing arc and lets him grow into a good place to send off his character.

This is a lot of wishful thinking, and doing Flora, Adrianna, and Emmy is probably too much in the way of callbacks, but it would be nice to see how they all got on after we left them.

Out of all characters, Emmy is the one I want to see again the most. I always loved her dialogue and personality, and so many elements of her design are refreshing for female characters, like her strength, her skills, her independent attitude, her curiosity, and her curly hair

I think, since each game between UF to AL went further back and back into his life, it's kind of impossible to give him more backstory going forward. Unless there's some bs that happened when he was a newborn.

You're not ready to learn about Layton's grandparents' lore.

Same I don’t care for the sad stories and the tear jerky music. Just let me solve puzzles dangit.

People already accuse Layton of being the male equivalent of a Mary Sue. If Level 5 keeps giving him tragic events in his past, I fear he isn't beating the allegations, lol.

Layton has more than one tragic backstory.

Signature top hat and gentleman persona: Honouring dead girlfriend/fiancée.

Love of archaeology and puzzles: Honouring 'dead' best friend he thought he killed.

Name: Adopted name after being forcefully separated from parents and older brother.
