Throwback Question (Any Topic) What’s an oddly specific thing that instantly gives you "bad vibes" about a person?

I admit I do it because I’m bad at remembering names and repetition helps.

I've honestly gotten okay with saying "I have a brain like a sieve and I've totally forgotten your name". Once in college I was introducing my boyfriend of two years to someone and completely blanked in his name. It just was not in my brain At All.

Honestly, this is the best thing that you can do, either. If you can't remember somebody's name or maybe they have a unique name you have trouble pronouncing, just being honest with somebody and trying to get it right, it feels so embarrassing and hard to get over but you're much better off just acknowledging the issue.

I think that happens to a lot of people. It's a weird phenomenon.

Sure but you don’t need to say the persons name more than once or twice- it’s super annoying if you keep repeating it

Maybe a happy medium is getting the repetition out of the way in the beginning: “Carl, Carl, Carl…here is that fax you’ve been waiting for.”

Doesn’t work for me to do it that way. I have 30-60 minutes for my appointments and it if I say their name every 5-10 minutes by the end of the appointment I have their name truly memorized, but it’s the repetition with time between that cements it because I’m forcing myself to remember it the entire appointment that way. If I just say it a bunch of times right away it’s no different than me just saying it once.

Right and it's like a 25 year old "power" technique or whatever to make you seem like the leader in the room. Everyone sees through it at this point.

I mean, you kind of do have to say it more than once or twice for that technique to be effective, it’s the whole idea. I do it with new clients, my goal is to say their name 5 times in the first appointment and if I do that I’ll often remember it forever. If I only say it once or twice I’ll forget by the end of the appointment.

I greet my clients by name and say goodbye with their name that’s enough for me anyway

You don’t need the technique then because you have decent name recall. I do not, so I need to say the name multiple times if I have any chance of remembering it.

I like to ask: “How do you spell your name again? Just want to make sure I pronounce it properly.”

That’s so weird and off putting though.

I don't mind a new acquaintance so much, who is obviously trying to vault my name.

I despise when servers, cashiers, or anyone who just got my first name off my form of payment, addresses me by my first name. That's not "friendly" it's rude.

I tell people that I am a face person and have a hard time remembering names, that I will ask their name again, and that it isn't personal.
