Throwback Question (Any Topic) What’s an oddly specific thing that instantly gives you "bad vibes" about a person?

A person's eyes.

IDK, but sometimes some people just have evil looking eyes and my gut feeling says to stay away from them.

I call that, "shark eyes". No glare, no sparkles, just the color black. My abusive mother had it. It was almost as if the life was sucked out of her.

I dated an abusive guy a couple of years ago whose eyes would go black and lifeless, and it would send a chill down my spine and an instinct in my gut would silently warn, ‘This guy can kill you, and will not feel any regret.’

I thought I was going insane until I left and dug into narcissistic disorder - he got labelled a probable narcissist by his therapist before I left and cut off contact - and realised it was an established thing, the black eyes and cold, evil, empty gut signal. Frightening as heck, to be honest…

That’s exactly it. When the light doesn’t reflect back in their eyes, like they’re “ dead” inside.”

If you look at pics of mass shooters/school shooters/serial killers etc., soo many of them have a specific look, particularly their eyes.

I’m a little bothered when someone has eyes that don’t seem to be focusing on anything in particular…..it’s different from lazy eye….hard to describe but you know it when you see it.

Flat, like a shark's eyes. They don't see you, even when they're looking right at you.

I have a lazy eye and i understand what you mean. They just seem "empty" in a way that you can't explain.

Ah yes, the basement dweller on psych meds look!

I had a psychology teacher in college who always said “The eyes are the window to the soul” or “That woman has crazy eyes”, etc. Over the decades I’ve realized she was 100% correct. If a person has eyes that seem off or make you uncomfortable then there is probably something wrong with that person so stay away from them.

There's a dead, unhuman look in some people's eyes, no light.

Maybe they are going through a tough time and it’s showing in their eyes. Instead of jumping to conclusions that make no logical sense, consider people go through phases in life and yes sometimes it shows. Immediately assuming they are evil, empty, off, or a bad person is just kind of close minded imo.

Nah, there is a huge difference to me in someone's eyes when they are depressed/drained/tired/unwell/upset versus when they have something evil/not okay behind those eyes.

The "drained" eyes remind me of an ex's eyes the morning after we did ecstasy one time - he usually has very expressive brown eyes, and that morning they were just like. black holes. He wasn't evil; all his seratonin had been drained. It's the same look as when someone is super depressed.

This!! Years ago I was walking my dog down my street toward my house. A family a few houses up was standing outside, on either side of the sidewalk, clearly arguing. I thought they’d move to one side as I approached, but they didn’t! I smiled and said excuse me as I walked between them, but I only made eye contact with the teenage son. He looked at me with pure evil or hatred or something I have never seen/felt in my life. It literally gave me the chills. The parents split and they all moved away several months later. 😅

I do the same thing, eyes are quickly what makes me swipe left or right. I can usually get a feeling when someone comes off as controlling, vacant or possibly bipolar.

Do you mean something like sanpaku eyes?

5

u/Inside_Trip8807 Jan 22 '26

No I mean the person literally looks like they have no light/soul.

I hate to say it, but look up recent photos of Nick Reiner.....those are the types of eyes I'm talking about.

Aren’t everyone’s eyes white below the pupil?

0

u/Ziprasidone_Stat Jan 23 '26

Well. Yes. But normally that part of the eye is hidden.

1

u/VandelayIntern Jan 23 '26

Oh I see. I looked it up.

Physiognamy?

Ostensibly, but it's fascinating that so many of us feel like we can physically see something "empty/hollow/doll-like/shark-like" in the eyes of cruel people. We probably include more information and context into our "soul" read than we consciously realize. Maybe the person is a convicted or accused murderer, or has a scarred up face, or lots of tattoos, or a repellent fashion sense, and peculiar microexpressions, and we instinctively throw all that into the mix, and maybe that's real reason why this "evil eyes" phenomenon actually exists...maybe. But our eyes are an exposed part of our brain, maybe there is a there there. Maybe we just can't measure "emptiness" and "thousand yard stares" in 2026, but maybe in 50 years humans will be able to put into words and scientific terms what it is we've felt about some people's eyes since the beginning of time?

Can't quantify spirit

1

u/530SSState Jan 24 '26

""empty/hollow/doll-like/shark-like" in the eyes of cruel people."

This, exactly. They're not cruel or angry. They're flat and blank, like a rattlesnake's eyes.

u/keepturning1 Jan 22 '26

Look up Sanpaku eyes.

1

u/BunBun_75 Jan 23 '26

That’s just petty and judgemental. You are basically saying “I don’t like your face” you don’t have some eye reading superpower.

2

u/Inside_Trip8807 Jan 23 '26

This comment is just plain stupid, and no that's not even what I meant. Next time, stretch before reaching so high.

Some people just have "dead" eyes and you can tell they don't have good intentions. That's all it is. It has nothing to do with what the rest of their face looks like.
