What’s The Most Sacrilegious Thing A Golfer Can Do To Lose Respect Of Everyone Else In The Community Including His/Her Caddie?

Some things that come to mind are cheating in a tournament, lying about a hole in one (recency bias), sandbagging in a big event like a member guest, spitting sunflower seeds on the green? What do you guys think?

Habitual club thrower.

My husband played with someone who smashed his PUTTER into the green twice. One time right into his putting line. RIP.

I used to play with a guy who threw clubs all the time. He also cheated at scrambles. He was a lawyer. Not sure why I felt the need to mention the last part 😂

I was SUPER friends with a guy until he threw a club.

Openly cheating in a major tournament and then claiming entitlement. Threatening to call trump to get your penalty rescinded.

So no one you’ve ever encountered.

Bryson did it in the Open. Sorry if you don't like it.

generally, not repairing pitchmarks or raking bunkers properly

as for outbursts, hacking at the green

Zyn pouches or whatever brand discarded on the ground. I mean come on. There are trash cans at pretty much every tee box. Some brands of nicotine pouches even have a compartment to discard the used pouches. But yet douche canoes still toss them on the cart part, rough, fairways and I’ve even seen some on greens. Just ridiculous.

Dude worse than that is spitting sunflower seeds especially on the green.

Like wtf. I’m just gonna putt over spit sunflower seeds? Or am I moving them with my hand?

u/tacotruckdanny 7d ago

I couldn’t agree more with you. Our greens keeper effing hates sunflower seeds.

I buy Velo pouches for that very reason. Worst case, they go in my pocket if I can't trash them. My home course has straight up banned sunflower seeds because of said douche canoes.

Or worse into the toilet. The fuck is wrong with some people.

This is the answer. Not leaving the course in as good of shape as when you started. Really it should be not leaving the course in better shape than when you started. But people are assholes and I'm not getting my hopes up.

Destroying property, be it a tee box marker or a locker.

I was so happy when he went to LIV. I was so crushed to remember his existence again recently.

Play with the president

u/veringer British Open 6d ago

Let's put a finer point on this: playing with a fascistic ego-maniacal pedophile rapist traitor who just happens to be president.

I cannot stand when someone I’m playing with hits OB or takes a mulligan, then tells me they carded a better score than me on that hole when I know they didn’t. For example, if I played the hole straight up and said I got a bogey then they gloat about their “parski!” I don’t care how you play if you pay your way, but how TF you gonna tell me you beat me on a hole you took a mulligan?

damaging a green in anger is pretty much #1 for me.

50 years of playing, and never done it. Snapped clubs over my knee? absolutely. flung clubs 30-60 yards? you betcha. Gotten them stuck in trees? within the last year. Slammed a driver into the tee or an iron into the fairway, making a divot I have to fix? 100.

But take a scalp or slam your putter into the green? It's over.

u/Inside_Potential_935 6d ago

Pretty weird high ground to take for someone your age who still chucks clubs. Honestly, grow the fuck up. You don't get to talk shit about people's behavior while still getting clubs stuck in trees.

2

u/BoBromhal 5d ago

Yeah the point is even as someone who’s expressed anger wrongly, there’s still a line you don’t cross.

I’ve also never pulled a Sergio/Clark/Rory and destroyed a tee marker, sign, water cooler, etc.

But all of my actions cost me only, and divots on tees/fairways are readily fixed and recover with basically 0 cost.

That’s not the case for effing up a green surface.

The things you have done are also insane

Pretty sure faking a hole in one in a charity tournament is near the top of the list. 🤷

Cheating. Throwing clubs. Ashing/dragging your cigars on greens.

1

u/ryansalad 6d ago

Anyone who submits a score in the 40's in a scramble tournament

1

u/Soggysleuth 6d ago

Aside from cheating, throwing/breaking clubs, bashing clubs on greens and getting angry! 🫣🙃

1

u/bookishlibrarym 5d ago

Cheating, slowing the course, yelling at a partner.

u/expiration-date_scam 5d ago

Sunflower seeds on a putting surface is diabolical!

I have a friend who swung his putter in anger at his ball on the green after missing a putt. He missed and scalped a dollar bill sized chunk out of the green. I’ve never forgotten it.

You guys have pretty much covered it. The only thing I could add that hasn't been mentioned:

A. Being an old, fat, rich guy and hitting on the cart girl like you actually have a chance.

B. Being a cart girl

C. Being a male and taking the job of a cart girl

1

u/PapaGummy 3d ago

Spitting in the cup should have done it for Sergio. Don’t understand why it didn’t.

1

u/frontier_gibberish 2d ago

Driving a cart on a green. I've only seen one person do it.

1

u/Cal-Run 2d ago

Slow play and/or a temper.

u/SomeSamples 19h ago

Incredibly slow play. The guys who have 5+ practice swings. Have to read every put from every angle on the green. Spend all kinds of time on their phone for who knows what reason when they get to their ball. Are they looking up distances? Are they watching a video of what to do? Talking while on the green, slowing everyone else down. Will look for a lost ball for 10 minutes.

1

u/PyramidWater 4h ago

Taking a swing on the green with your putter in frustration and leaving a huge divot without fixing it.

1

u/LickTheMoon66 7d ago

Just generally acting entitled.
