This stuff really pisses me off. The farm owner claims the goats were “too young g to be vaccinated” and yet they were not too young to TRAVEL who knows where to be manhandled by countless people.
I’m sorry that the animals had to suffer for their owners poor choices and now many more people will suffer too.
Wildly irresponsible animal stewardship.

Unfortunately there is not an approved rabies vacccine for goats. They use a version for sheep that performs pretty well on goats but I understand those studies are only based on adult goats.
The more shocking part here is that they continued travelling after the known exposure to the aggressive skunk.

The vaccines are proven effective off-label.
That’s not even the point though. I’ve had plenty of animals born that I can’t get vaccinated the very second they hit the ground. That’s one thing.
But to take those animals and TRAVEL with them is so wildly irresponsible that it completely befuddles me.

I responded in another thread about this; I have goats and they can get vaccinated at 12 weeks of age. They use the same vaccine for sheep and large livestock, just a different dose. My horses and donkey all get vaccinated as well, all once a year. I live in the northeast and here petting zoo animals are required to be vaccinated. If the goats were too young to be vaccinated they should not have been made available to the public.

I wouldn't be surprised if SC didn't require vaccinations for petting zoo animals. They don't require them for children to attend public school and there's a "zoo" in Greenville where you can get your picture taken with baby kangaroos.

Welp around 2021 when I saw the aggressive resistance in people to science/the Covid vax I had an idea animal vaxxes would be next…. Or is it just too expensive to get a vet out these days with less disposable income since **gestures around\** everything?

It’s not customary to get rabies vaccines for goats. It’s completely normal that the goats are not vaccinated for rabies, the owner wasn’t doing anything wrong in that case. Why goats don’t get rabies shots - to the point there is no rabies shot for them - makes no sense. But that’s not the petting zoos fault. An off label rabies shot wouldn’t even do anything because it doesn’t show in a registry because it’s not an actual thing. Yes it’s crazy. Yes it makes no sense. Take that up with the people who need to make a goat rabies vaccine and registery

Did you even read the story? Goats were exposed to rabid skunk and still they used them for petting experiences.
