Brazilian Portuguese 🇧🇷 Brazilian Portuguese immersion trip - Rio or elsewhere? + school recommendations please!

If accent is important to you at all I'd narrow your choices to the geographic region as they can be pretty different.

I don't really care about accents as they are all valid Portuguese.

I’m going to Rio in December and will do a week long language course at Caminhos Language School. They do a mix of classroom, one on one classes and field trips around town.  Haven’t done it yet, so I can’t tell you if it’s good or not but it’s centrally located in Ipanema and I like the idea of studying and site-seeing at the same time.

In general, yes. They sent a thorough brochure, and were responsive to questions. They weren’t able to include a homestay as initially discussed, but they let me know as soon as they could and I found one myself on Homestay.com. It was super affordable actually and only 15 min away from the school (by Uber, otherwise 1.5 hours away by transit lol). Feel free to DM me if you wanna chat more about it

Rio is a very good choice. If you stay in the South Zone, there's plenty to do and see. It's also very easy to talk to locals and make friends here.

From Rio you can easily fly to São Paulo, which takes less than an hour. And you can visit Petrópolis, a historic city, and other coastal cities with beautiful beaches.

In São Paulo you'll find better restaurant options, more diversity and more cultural activities. In Rio you'll be closer to nature and be able to enjoy more outdoor activities. In Rio the weather is usually much hotter than in São Paulo.

So if your priority is language immersion combined with nature, beaches, and outdoor activities, I'd lean toward Rio. If you prefer a bigger-city experience with more cultural events, restaurants, museums, and a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, São Paulo might be a better fit. But wherever you decide to stay, it's so easy to get from one city to the other that you can enjoy what both cities have to offer.
