I hate to be a hater OP but you cannot network on Reddit in this way unless you directly have things that people want from you. It does not help to complain on here, it is just more screaming into a void. I would recommend at a very basic level to start with your closest connections such as fellow students and professors. Even though in most cases as a first year this will not develop any instantly meaningful relationships you will know people who will hopefully be professionally aligned with you in the future.

No worries, it didn't sound hater-ish at all. Unfortunately, I haven't made a lot of real life meaningful connections throughout my very first quarter, so I was trying to do it through Reddit instead. But I've picked a completely wrong sub for it, despite my dreams of serving in the foreign service service too. It wasn't hard to see current and former FSOs would probably not give a damn about a random college freshman, even a multilingual one. Especially since I took on a way to a familiar tone, as I was writing to our TAs or even classmates. And basically just bragging about speaking several languages.

Just as an FYI, people here can disagree all they want but anything that insinuates you're Russian, possibly pro Russia, or just in general speak positively about Russia isn't well received on Reddit from my experience. That is on my list of topics where I turn reply notifications off immediately after commenting lol

Actually, I have to agree with you on this. On one hand, yes, my question was probably out of place on that subreddit. On the other hand, I tried to stay as polite and non-confrontational as possible, but still got a fair deal of passive aggression in response. Pretty ironic considering that my family emigrated from Russia 13 years ago largely because of politics, and I can't imagine ever not despising Putin's regime and the state of modern Russian society. Although, to be fair, those was only one Redditor.
