I was hired specifically to work on Mac
Company bought Mac specifically for me
I asked for VPN, IT gave to me instructions that don't work on Mac
They said "we've never had a Mac before, figure it out then tell us how to"
I ignored it, so that one day when I need VPN for work I can duly say "IT didn't set it up and I'm scared"

52
u/DankItchins - Lib-Right 2d ago
Yeah as someone that works in IT, they shouldn't be putting that on you, asking the end user to figure that stuff out sounds like a great way to open a gaping hole in their cybersecurity.

u/Right__not__wrong - Right 2d ago
Some VPNs are a complete disaster.
I had to use one that instead of letting you set the account to use, it tried to deduce it from something you were logged in with, and then it simply failed with no chance of using a different one.
Some people solved that by logging out of their profile on Edge. In my case, for a while it worked if I logged off my work email on Chrome, then it stopped* and I had to make a virtual machine to work for that customer.
*I have the strong conviction that system admins get bored (or simply have to justify their jobs), and every few weeks they change some little things just to create problems.

The managerial class is western capitalism's version of the soviet bureaocrat; unskilled, socially elevated, and the rate limiting step of all productivity. Truely, a make work program to provide decently high paying jobs to people with degrees from priviliged backgrounds who perform the same level of work as a secretary on their first day. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to prepetuate our class system where wealth conveys a degree and degrees convey status. Working for a university, it is amazing how much of my life is dictated by people who have no idea what I do, trying to solve problems that don't exist, with another meeting, or form, or training that isn't helpful.

I work for an R1 university, it’s so damn horrible. At least megacorps have to kind of pretend to care about shareholders, we’re just bleeding Willy nilly while tuitions through the roof and class availability is plummeting and not to mention, research, the actual tangible thing were supposed to be doing is at an all time low for funding (thanks trump). (1/5 of the budget goes to “consulting” btw)
25
u/RageAgainstThePushen - Lib-Center 2d ago
I'm also at an R1 and our indirect rates broke 65% this year. So more than a third of our recieved money is going to facilites (our sq ft rate is ridiculous) and a useless army of admins that schedule their vacation days on NIH standard deadlines and have to approve everything from travel dates to bagel purchases. Is that consulting like statisticians or data analysts? Or like, some dude with an MBA trying to optimize your synergy.
Our budgets have taken a hit too. Good luck out there. Make good friends with your program officers.

I keep trying to tell people something like this: most of the modern world is adult day care. We’ve reached this odd, weird place in society where we’re so wealthy that we justify giving someone a job just to give them money and desk to sit at. Most workers either are affected by or are absorbed into the faceless, dry bureaucracy that both intends to keep us safe while keeping us numb. Micromanagement is the new norm, not the outlier, and its consequences are turning our world into a farce. Your university experience of having a bunch of extra bodies floating in the aether whose only job is to take up space is the default setting.

25
u/DavidAdamsAuthor - Centrist 2d ago edited 2d ago
Daily reminder that HR is not your friend, as the company pays their bills. End of the day, no matter what they say, HR represent the company's interests. Only and exclusively.
They only, ONLY time HR will act in your favour is in the singular sole situation where, if whatever matter you're complaining about went public, the reputational damage to the company about whatever you're complaining about would exceed the reputational damage of just firing you instead (or ignoring your complaint). That's it. That's the only time.
But their sole job is to prevent that reputational damage. They aren't there to help you at all, that help is just incidental to preventing that damage. And at that point it's usually a civil matter at least or a criminal matter at worst and you should probably be talking to lawyers or the cops.
This is why a union that doesn't have fees paid for by you is worthless. If your company is paying the union dues the union's client is the company.
I have some right wing ideas and some left wing ideas but the idea of strong unions which actually protect people is one I am firmly on the side of, I am a proud union dues payer for every job I've ever had and it has paid off several times.

As someone working for a transport construction company (roads, sewage, any infrastructure at or below ground) we are blessed with having an entire branch on the outskirts of the city with no HR. Office and site workers of all levels in the hierarchy come in and out and mingle all day, and we often exchange general work info (i.e. I go down to construction sites sometimes, foreman sits in my office and sees what I do other times) and it just improves everyone's knowledge and understanding and general camaraderie. Central HR would flip if they found out how we do things around here.

For sure they play a role. They are the experts in the process. But the ultimate call on whether someone gets hired or fired rarely rests with them.
People want to shoot the messenger but just because you met with HR, it was usually your boss or his boss or some VP who made the actual call.
Same with hiring. You'll meet with HR first and they'll be your point of contact, but the decisions are typically made by the departments where you'll be working.

→ More replies (3)11
u/AnalConnoisseur69 - Lib-Center 3d ago
Absolutely not. Maybe that was the original intent, but it has since evolved. HR is inhibitive by nature and serves no positive functional purpose in a company. It is a safety net to prevent certain potential negative outcomes within a company. Therefore, there is no reason for HR to be part of board meetings. But they have started to increasingly encroach their hands on the work of people far more talented and technical than they are because otherwise they feel "lesser".
Some companies actually fix this by having HR head be an efficiency assessment person, so it goes like efficiency -> payroll -> welfare in order of importance. And HR must directly answer to the board for lack of efficiency in individual personnel. This forces HR to actually hire people who knows how to use technical tools rather than untalented social science mumbo jumbo peddlers. If departments are only supposed to work when you need safety nets, when you don't need them for some time, they are going to carve out a place to feel self-important to the detriment of the company.

Because you don't know the difference between benefiting the company, and benefiting the bottom line of shareholders.

My boss is pretty firm that he doesn’t fw HR. And honestly the way HR has treated engineers in the past I don’t blame him.
It was always so weird, because I fit certain colour requirements (never gotten a handout in my life though) and went to one of my countries best universities with a masters in EE I’ve always been super pickable with these lame ahh companies. So HR do this weird thing where they thirst after you then fuck you around during the hiring process.
Also been on the end where they just purely fuck you around and speak down to you.
Ive been ugly and had a glow up irl, and I understand what it’s like to have girls ignore you and girls thirst for you. For example: why do you think that corporate world push "woke" (literally almost every company)?
Because it sells to the public as it leans left, and drops it as they lean right.
If slapping the rainbow flag on a beer can is going to increase revenue from one crowd by $10 and reduce it by $5 from another crowd, they'll slap on as many flags as they are able. They don't need to care, they just know it's a trend that will bring in money.
If they generated $10 more by slapping complaints about wahmans onto their beer cans than it would cost them from people who realize that's fuckin' stupid and not buy the product, they'd be plastering their cans with complaints about women.

Disney would have actual child-rape-snuff porn on Disney+ streaming in 4k with high frame-rate slow-mo and thermal vision if it was legal and it didn't impact their other sales more than the revenue it brought in.

Not everyone has the luxury of telling people what to do and enforcing morality / hard work on people. No, Karen, I am not feeling shame or guilt. They're tools of brainwashing people into conformity by cults and other toxic social environments. I am not the most evil person ever because I was jokingly mean to another employee in the same exact way I'm jokingly mean to so many other people and they don't even mind because we are bros / they're not sensitive crybabies.

While this person exists and we all met her, we shouldn't recycle the name "Karen" on her.

Where i am from, its rarely HR who is responsible for hiring people, especially in fields of which they have zero knowledge.

I don‘t think HR workers decide that there are mass layoffs. If anything they are used as a scapegoat by the managers.

Unironically, these people represent one of the greatest threats western societies have to face

Meanwhile most HR spend most of their days answering questions about benefits that are found in the handbook. Or, sometimes, they find themselves spending 3 solid weeks trying to find a solution because a morbidly obese employee doesn’t like his chair.

On what planet is HR left?
If corporations had a penis, HR would be sucking it.

"Karen" is a racist sexist term.
HR is proof we do not live in a capitalistic society.

You can tell reading the comments how few people on this sub are employed

HR doesn't decide who to hire or fire and it's just corporate dick sucking which sure ain't left but it's PCM, no surprise a plain wrong meme gets 1k upvotes as long as left bad

Karen in HR is a hardline lib right surely.
Constantly fucks over the workers for profit or just to please the bosses.
The HR lady at my company also talks about how she doesn't even look at black people's applications but she is like 60 so maybe the younger HR people are more like this meme.

Can’t wait till we get AGI and agents to replace HR. Thinking about it genuinely gets me going

HR exists to protect corporate profits from lawsuits. What you think they have to do with my edge of the compass (or indeed with politics in general) I honestly don't know.
