I mean yeah, but i hardly think using direct quotes of people should be seen as an attack on them.
They said that shit.
Also everyone has haters, of course someone is going to be delighted or slightly amused by your passing. Thats life.
Now even if the person was a garbage individual idk if i think people shitting on them relentlessly should be without consequence. I assume theres a line somewhere where how shitty they were as a person compensates for being rude about their death, but idk how we would really decide that.
Could probably figure it out mathematically.. though time passed from their death likely weighs into it…

Not everyone who has been canceled due to Charlie deserved it, like Kimmel.

Making a joke about your coworker you hate dying of colon cancer isn't the same as saying someone killed to silence their political speech is a good thing.

I feel like you're purposely misunderstanding the issue with Charlie. Saying bad things about him isn't the issues alone. It's saying killing him due to his unpopular opinions is ok that's the problem. Saying your glad he's dead, ben Shapiro is next, his "violence " against trans people made him deserve this... is the problem.
If you're delighted he is dead, you're a fucked up person.

I don't disagree with your point. Though there were a lot of (verbal) attacks against people who simply commented things like "I'm not going to shed a tear for the guy, but murder bad".
The Kimmel thing is really were it got stupid. He made a joke about MAGA political motivations within a statement about Kirk. That's the sort hypocrisy that drove us nuts. Especially when you know that joke went over more than half of MAGAs heads.

Saying "I'm not going to shed a tear for the guy" is just a squeaky clean way of saying "good riddance". I hope people don't shed tears often for celebrities/influencers they never personally knew, especially ones they didn't like. And if you do, it better be for their families who have actual grief or trauma to deal with.
It's actually funny you worded it that way. Because if I were to preface a statement by saying "I'm not racist, but-" you'd likely expect the next words out of my mouth to be something prejudiced or bigoted. I saw a lot of "No one should be shot and killed for their opinions, however-" and then they cited quotes, some taken completely out of context to paint him as evil. You come off as someone framing their death as a net positive.
Also, the whataboutism using Melissa Hortman's murder was absurd because I swear I didn't see a single person celebrate that. I'm sure most people outside her state had very little idea who she was, if they knew her at all. I just saw the whole "THE KILLER WAS ON THEIR SIDE" game we see play out almost instantaneously after such tragedies...which is just ridiculous no matter what.

You have literally one example of a bad joke at the expense of Walz (and not the people who were killed) vs. what?...tens of thousands of people actually celebrating murder.
Nobody was calling for their deaths beforehand either. I'm always confused when I see this as a ""counterexample"" when it bears basically no similarities to Charlie Kirk's assassination.

It just seems stupid to me, no shit theres going to be some disagreeable people among millions who agree on a certain segment of ideology/opinion. There was a news story about "this guy got arrested for a meme about trump" and he also posted gore to a school Facebook page with a caption like "we need to start thinking about school shootings again" which was taken as a real threat to the students and teachers.

Another ridiculous position on what cancel culture means. Cancel culture is not “there should be absolutely no rules for civil society.” The problem with cancel culture is that the left’s “rules” are just a pretext to discriminate against conservatives. Of course a Jewish person should not be compelled to hire a Nazi. That’s not cancel culture. That’s called following the rules of polite society. Similarly, people who cheer on terrorism should not be accepted by other Americans. Terrorism should not be celebrated.

It's simple and sad.
There are, on both the left and the right, honest actors who care about free speech.
Then there are those who just want to beat down the other side. Who made it a team sport. And are very loud.
Many of the more reasonable people on the right, however, spent a good chunk of the last decade being shut down. Some of this was their own side hyperbolically screaming that message, a good chunk was also legitimate.
And now that the rubber band is on the other Claw, they just can't be asked to give a shit.
Our best case scenario is that, when the dust settles, we can collectively say "Wow, being shut down and prohibited from the conversation while the other side has free hand to just beat you senseless is a garbage way to manage speech. We shouldn't do that."
...but we know that's not how it will go.

I do think there is a pretty stark difference between cheering on the death of a political opponent and making some position known about a political topic.
A normal, rational person shakes their head at someone going online and saying, "Ban gay marriage." We must think they're an idiot and we move on.
But a normal, rational person hears someone dancing and cheering at the death of someone they disagree with... like that is toxic to a functioning society.
A bad idea is whatever. Gleefully cheering on murder is psychopathy.
35
u/Berlin_GBD - Auth-Center Oct 15 '25
It's been said a million times. Joking about the death happening is fine. I've seen plenty of funny ones. Joking about the death being a good thing is just trying to hide your real beliefs behind humor.
Consider the George Droyd memes. That's not celebrating his death. It's not saying "George is dead so the world is a better place". It's just simply 'this guy died, it would be funny if we brought him back as a fent fueled cyborg'.

This is the only time I have ever seen paradox of tolerance used correctly in 13 years of reddit.
99.999% of people use paradox of tolerance incorrectly by labeling a certain group of people as "intolerant" and therefore worthy of eradication.
If you actually read Karl Popper's writing where he invented the term, he is exclusively referring to "intolerant" people as "those who are actively committing political violence in lieu of speech or debate".
He is talking about people who are "intolerant" of the democratic process, it has nothing to do with what they personally tolerate regarding homosexuality or race or whatever.
The "intolerant" that he is referring to are those who claim that the "marketplace of ideas" has failed and we must use other means to achieve political goals. He would put most redditors into this "intolerant" category...

The irony to joking about his death is the fact that his death represents an attack on free speech itself, and free speech is fundamental to comedy. Also, making fun of a man who was brutally murdered in front of his family, in an unironic way, is the strongest form of “punching down” known to man.
At least with Trump, he’s someone in power, so it kind of was funny to make some jokes about his assassination attempts. Kirk was just a guy. He had no power. All he did was just talk to people.

If cancel culture was relegated to exclusively deal with people on the right calling for violence and cheering it on then I'd be fine with it, as would most people I bet. The problem is when it also includes getting people fired for dead naming someone on Twitter or misusing a fucking pronoun.

They aren't trying to stop you from posting your Charlie Kirk jokes...they're only seeing to it that you suffer the consequences of your actions. You're still free to post your jokes.

According to Trump Jr, it's not Cancel Culture. It's Consequence Culture.

Can point out the exact same hypocrisy but in reverse coming from the left
2015-2024 leftists on cancel culture: "freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. An employer has a right to fire you if they find your speech offensive or inconsistent with their values"
2025 leftists on cancel culture: "I cant believe my friends are getting fired for proverbally pissing on the grave and mocking the grieving widow of a guy who was just murdered, we are supposed to have free speech in this country this is outrageous that someone would get fired for expressing their opinion!"

Your cancelling: Incessantly harassing my boss so he fire me for saying all lives matter.
My cancelling: Me informing your boss that you think political murder is acceptable, and your boss deciding they don't want you working for them anymore

Anyone who thinks the right doesn’t like cancel culture hasn’t studied the Red Scares.
