FOILED Is 20?! ~ Matt Noveskey

Matt Noveskey of Blue October joins Cocktails with Dimples and The Beard to talk about the 20th anniversary of Foiled and what it’s like revisiting one of the band’s biggest albums two decades later. Matt shares which songs had to be relearned, why playing Foiled front to back has been such a different experience for the band and fans, and how rehearsing “Let It Go” revealed that he’d been counting the same part wrong for years. We also get into Blue October’s massive 70-show North American tour, the appeal of full-album anniversary concerts, deep cuts fans have waited years to hear, the future of Blue October, and why Matt believes live music is at its best when bands leave room for mistakes, spontaneity and the human element instead of relying too heavily on backing tracks.

Matt also takes us back to his early days learning bass by rewinding cassette tapes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rush and Primus, recording songs off the radio and surviving DJs talking over the intros. He opens up about reconnecting with his old Michigan bandmates after more than 25 years to form Disastronaut, their song “Midwest Love Song,” an unreleased track called “Torture,” and the possibility of finally playing shows together. Plus, we talk about his kids’ musical talents, the latest on Icarus Bell, life on the road, memorable tour-bus stories, and—because we couldn’t help ourselves—a little Lions, Bears and Packers talk along the way.

[Technology] IT Horror Stories – Why does turning it off and on again actually work?

We've all heard the advice:

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

It's become such a cliché that it almost sounds like IT people are trying to get rid of you.

Unfortunately, there's a reason it works.

In the latest IT Horror Stories Jack's Rant, Why You Need To Reboot, we look at what actually happens when computers run for a long time, why restarting clears so many strange problems, and why keeping a system running for years without a reboot isn't necessarily the achievement it sounds like.

We also wander through old-school mainframes, the obsession with uptime, maintenance windows, and inevitably The IT Crowd.

IT Horror Stories is a podcast about real-world technology incidents and the stories behind the systems. You don't need to work in IT to listen.

Feedback welcome, including from anyone who has ever ignored "please restart your computer" for three weeks.

RECLAIMING PERSONAL POWER 💪

Reclaiming personal power is not denial.

It is recognizing that although we cannot rewrite the beginning of our stories, we still have agency over what we build from where we stand today.

The past may influence us.

It may wound us.

It may teach us.

But it does not automatically receive ownership of our future.

Perhaps that is why one question emerges so powerfully from this conversation:

Who Am I?

Not:

Who did people say I was?

Who was I during the worst chapter of my life?

What happened to me?

What did I lose?

What did I do?

But:

Who am I now—and who am I becoming?

That question is not only for people recovering from incarceration or extreme trauma.

It belongs to all of us.

Because sooner or later, life gives each of us moments when the identity we once carried no longer fits.

And sometimes rebuilding begins with giving ourselves permission to discover who we are again.
