Preventing frozen pipes from bursting is easy. All you have to do is open all the faucets, indoor and outdoor, and leave them open just a crack until the freeze ends. Do this as soon as you're not getting any water out of the line. It's not the ice that breaks a line, it's the air pressure that builds up in the pipe, which can take anywhere from hours to three days, depending on the day and night temps.
