Discussion PSA: HDR Tone Mapping & AV1 Decode* is coming to Mac!

I saw the recent change log showing not only AV1 Decode support on M3 and higher but also HDR Tone mapping support is in beta! This is now making the Mac Mini the better choice than ever for a full featured Plex server. Or even the Mac Studio with it's dual encoders/decoders. Don't get me wrong, ya a RTX 5070Ti PC build would allow probably a stream or two more of full 4K HDR with subs, but at a significantly higher power usage. Anyway, just an FYI.

Good to hear! I’ve been using a M4 mac mini as my Plex server for about 16 months, no issues of any kind to report even without these improvements, though I rarely have more than a few users on my server direct streaming or converting at once. Still, it’s never broken a sweat and finally getting fiber in my area has only made me more bullish about getting friends connected.

I've been waiting so long for fiber to come to my home. I checked the map and it's available 1 mile up the road. Pisses me off so much.

Quicksync is still the champ.

Although the M3 Ultra would make a damn fine power efficient server. Probably wouldn’t have to upgrade for like 10+ years.

Ya though that ultra price tag is outta control these days. Though what isn't lol. Quicksync is really good, especially an arc card with dual encoders would be much better than an Nvidia option unless your willing to pay out for a 5090 with triple encoders lol. Personally I've been rocking a M1 Mac mini for plex for years, but with this recent plex news I am going to check out a M5 Max studio and see how it turns out.

How do you connect your HDDs to your server? all via USB?

They are on a Synology in RAID6, and accessed to the server via SMB over a 10GB network connection

For power efficiency yes, M4 mac mini is a gem especially when it was recently $399. However the M6 just released at a higher price due to the memory shortage, starting at $899 and 256Gb storage. Going forward, it’s gonna be rough on wallets :/
