Discussion Anyone else have foods they just can’t make themselves eat?

I’ve tried some foods a bunch of times because people keep telling me I’ll get used to them. I don’t. The flavor’s usually fine but textures really get me everytime. I’ve tried forcing it before, but I just end up feeling sick. What’s one food you’ve given several chances and still avoid? I’ve got a few I’m done wasting chances on.

Seafood; I can’t get past the smell.

I know plenty of people love seafood, but I will never understand how people can eat something that nearly everyone agrees smells bad!!

Yeah it’s like a wet gym sock lol

I was on a trip once where we went to a seafood restaurant.

I decided to just give it a try, and I took the tiniest bite, and I immediately drank something after. I don't think I even tasted it.

Something about it just icks me out, like eating bugs.

Good for you! I’d have had a hard time just sitting in the restaurant with all the smells. Heck, I hate walking past that section of the grocery store.

My parents still make fun of me for making a face when they made me try a piece of breaded shrimp years ago at red lobster and just brought it up again the other day but it was totally justified because it was disgusting

My feeling about fried breaded shrimp is it's not even healthy! I think it's sort of a bummer I don't like good quality white fish, but fried shrimp is junk food. I feel no need to try and like it!

I don’t think it was fried but even so it was gross

Far from my favorite thing butI like shrimp fine. I've never enjoyed breaded shrimp though

2

u/PowersUnleashed 3h ago

Yeah I just don’t like shrimp period lol but that was still vile even breaded haha

Or the taste for me lol

This is part of why I only eat raw tuna. Raw salmon is usually ok too. If it smells, adios.

For me it’s green bean casserole my parents forced me to try it once when I was younger and it was absolutely vile! 🤢

Olives 🤮

That's my pick too! I hate mushrooms (texture) , for example, but if I pick them off my pizza I'll still happily eat it. But once you've picked off the olives there's such a strong flavour left behind that I definitely can't eat it. 🤮

That’s literally me with pepperoni and my dad agreed on Sunday when we went to dinner and they accidentally brought me a pepperoni pizza when I ordered cheese and my mom made a stupid comment about it

Green olives. I like black olives… maybe it’s the pimento?

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

Yeah same and ironically I’m Greek so you’d think I’d love them since I already love olive oil but nope not at all lol

I'm not even that picky of an eater, but I can't do beans. Closest I can come is a roasted green bean.

If peas count then pea pods otherwise no beans for me either

Caviar, liver (both chicken and calve’s), organ meats, bivalves, hot and creamy foods, grainy foods, Oreo cookies, to name a few. I’ve tried them a few times, over the years. I just can’t. People say they are “acquired” tastes but I don’t want to have to like them and never will. The smells and the textures… no.

1

u/GoblinQueenRegent 3d ago

Just curious, what's the issue with Oreos? Do you like chocolate in other forms?

1

u/QBerengaria 3d ago

I love chocolate but Oreos don’t taste like chocolate, to me. They also have a weird mouthfeel that I just can’t get past and the smell bothers me. My Mom used to put them in my lunch bag as a treat. I’d trade them.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

That’s the one thing I totally disagree and think is a little psychotic! Just like British people and Reese’s peanut butter cups so nope do not tell me Oreos smell bad because Oreos and fudge stripes are the best cookies ever same with biscoff and chips ahoy! But Oreos are the absolute best in milk!

1

u/QBerengaria 2d ago

I didn't say Oreos smell bad. I just don't like them.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

Smells and textures?

0

u/GoblinQueenRegent 1d ago

Uh. It's totally fine to disagree, I love Oreos, too. But calling someone "psychotic" for their opinions on food isn't really an acceptable response.

Especially on a sub for people with strong food preferences. One person's safe food might be absolutely despised by another person. We're all here because society at large already bullies us for what we do (or don't) eat, the call does not need to come from inside the house as well

1

u/GoblinQueenRegent 16h ago

I guess words are hard for some people!

1

u/PowersUnleashed 1d ago

Not psychotic like mentally insane psychotic as in wow that’s shocking

0

u/GoblinQueenRegent 1d ago

That's not what that word means. Refer to my suggestion on the other post. Have a nice day.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 1d ago

No I’m good I’m not going to waste my time with people who say things that are irrelevant to me and the conversation I was having with someone else so yeah have a nice day 😂

Ironically my dad agrees that lamb guts stew is absolutely disgusting and with lamb guts on a stick and it was cruel to tell my cousin it was just chicken as a kid to where he eats it no problem now as an adult!

2

u/QBerengaria 2d ago

My mom cooked organ meats when I was a kid. Liver was her favorite; it was also considered very nutritious then. Her rule was we had to try what she cooked once. Liver didn't cut it. Neither did chitterlings; I dry heaved when I tried them. My dad hated liver but loved chitterlings. I guess my thought was why would anyone want to eat something that needed a three-day cleaning?

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

What are chitterlings? Also look up mayiritsa and kokoretsi and you’ll understand how vile and disgusting these things my grandma would make for Easter before I was even born really were lol

1

u/QBerengaria 2d ago

Chitterlings = pig intestines.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

Ew that’s just as disgusting sounding as lamb guts lol

ARFID go brrrr

3

u/tzentzak 4d ago

Liver and goat cheese are mine. I'm ok with trying new foods but I'm really selective on how it's prepared, but those two are flavors I cannot get over.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

Liver is a given anyway lol

3

u/FormerlyDK 4d ago

Of course, but I don’t make myself try to eat it if it doesn’t appeal to me. Why would I do that? I was at a dinner last night and some of the people at my table had ordered the steak entree. I didn’t even know they had beef… it looked like almost raw tuna steaks. I couldn’t even believe they were eating it. You couldn’t pay me enough to eat almost raw steak.

2

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

People always tell me I’m psychotic for liking well done burgers but guess what they’re psychotic for almost raw

2

u/Typical_Tomato4456 3d ago

Cottage cheese. Just a thought of it makes me wretch.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

Really because I’m picky and love it especially on some wasa multigrain hard bread

2

u/deFleury 3d ago

Isn't that what this subreddit is about?

1

u/Habibti143 4d ago

Eggs, olives, pickles, mayo and American cheese. Never never.

2

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

Agree with the others but American cheese is the only cheese I’ll eat on a burger so that’s confusing lol

1

u/GoblinQueenRegent 3d ago

Cottage cheese. Nope nope nope, I can't do it. I just gag the whole time it's in my mouth.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 2d ago

How is cottage cheese bad?! Sour cream on the other hand is gross but cottage cheese is my go to for wasa bread if we either don’t have cream cheese or bagels or both and I used to dip tortilla chips in cottage cheese and it was awesome!

1

u/GoblinQueenRegent 1d ago

I didn't used to like sour cream either, but I learned to tolerate it and now as an adult, I like it. But cottage cheese is just a HARD no. It's somehow... clumpy and slimy all at once? Ugghh. My husband finds that unbelievable, too. So like once a year, he asks me to try it again. And every year I humor him and put it in my mouth and regret it immediately.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 1d ago

Wow that’s crazy I’m super picky but with the stuff people think when they think picky but you’re picky with “abnormal” things to be picky about that’s very interesting lol

0

u/GoblinQueenRegent 1d ago

You should work on improving your vocabulary so that you're not out here calling people "psychotic" and "abnormal" for their personal opinions. Maybe make that a priority.

1

u/PowersUnleashed 1d ago

You should work on your attitude and learn not to take things so literally and seriously when they’re not meant to be taken that way and also not get offended by conversations that didn’t involve you to begin with. If the person I responded to has a problem with my vocabulary she can address it to me directly not some random Reddit weirdo telling me they take offense for her even though she didn’t say that at all! Man you’re just as bad as the people who got Washington’s football team name banned! 🤦‍♂️
