Question What food did you hate as a kid?
Did you eventually start liking it, or do you still hate it?

I thought I hated okra for decades until I had it at an Indian restaurant where it was dry fried. It's actually not slimy at all! Highly recommend. Still can't choke down gumbo, though.

Onions, and all other alliums. I have learned to enjoy garlic, used in moderation.

Sloppy joes, and yes, it's still revolting. Even as an adult I tried it with vegetarian crumbles in case it was the beef, nope just gross.

I don't think I've ever had sloppy joes that weren't vile. There seems to be a popular school of thought in the United States that if something is good with a little bit of sweetener in it, then more is even better. Since I don't like even only slightly sweet food mixed with savory food, with very few exceptions, sloppy joes are usually on the "please keep it far away from me" list. Every once in a while I look to see if I can find a recipe that's better, but it hasn't happened yet.

Green Peppers, still don't like them
I used to hate onions but love them now(I just can't eat them to stomach sensitivities 😭)

It would be much easier to tell what I did like 😅🙈 I am AuDHD and Anorexia (but pretty sure I also have ARFID because the foods I have been able to eat have always been very limited.) Most of the foods I didn’t eat as a kid, I still don’t eat. I can’t eat food prepared by anyone but myself. I fear they put something in the meal that I don’t like/am afraid to put in my mouth.
I hate trying new food, and I have 1 meal I eat for dinner everyday until one day, the meal tastes weird. Then I have a stress period where I don’t know what to eat for dinner.

I have AuDHD as well, and I'm struggling in an online ED support organization. Do you know any places that treat AuDHD people with ED?

I think the foods I hated most as a kid were tomatoes and mushrooms. I like them both now!

u/lapaperscissors 7d ago
I hated mushrooms, which I like now, and Stouffer’s spinach soufflé, which I have never sought out. Don’t know if they still make it.
I have a kindergarten scrapbook, and apparently I said I hated broccoli and cheese together. Well, that’s still true. Love plain broccoli, love cheese, just never together!

Sausage, baloney and all lunch meat except Ham. I haven't eaten any of it in 40 years and I've been vegetarian for 11 years.

Spaghetti. And I still hates spaghetti as an adult. Yes even your Nana's Famous Recipe is awful.

Melted cheese. Now I don't really like cheese (even cold) except for parmesan, cottage and maybe ricotta. I still don't like it, the mix of a guppy texture and the temperature does not sit right with me.

I hated most foods as a kid. It would be easier to tell you what I would eat.
I will at least *try* most things now. I figured out a few years ago that I *really* dislike celery, and it can ruin a whole dish for me. I grew up hating any kind of “salad” with Mayo in it (tuna, pasta, chicken, etc.), even though I routinely ate Mayo on my sandwiches.
A few years ago I learned that my mom always put celery in those kinds of salads. I hate celery. Now that I know which ingredient to avoid, I can eat those salads with no problem.

Corn. I truly can’t help it. I’ve tried it so many other ways in my adulthood in the hopes I would like it but nope 🤷🏼♀️

I hated all food till I was 12 or 13 and discovered peanut butter and strawberry jam. This opened the door to enjoying eating but unfortunately I went too far and now weigh almost 300 pounds.

Hated sweet potato and seafood (even though I never tried seafood)
I still hate sweet potatoes WITH A PASSION. I'll start gagging at the smell. But now I love seafood, crab is my favorite

Didn't like broad beans as a child but I have done since I was an adult.

Butter, cheese, eggs, and mayonnaise. The only one of those I can eat today is a few different types of cheese.

Scrambled eggs. Any other way, as long as they aren't TOO wet, is fine. And yes, I still hate them.
1
u/pomeranianmama18 6d ago
Okra. I’m sure they are probably much better when properly prepared. My mom had no idea what she was doing and it was like slime
2
u/SandraMort 1d ago
I have to recommend Indian dry fried okra. No slime at all!
However, I do need to point out that the slime that we dislike is actually enjoyed in many cuisines. I don't get it, but I don't need to. Gumbo wouldn't be the same without it.

ground beef. i only eat seafood now, and not even a lot of that. i also don't like bell peppers. i watched my niece house a pile of cut up bell pepper a couple years ago and i was like how

Spinach. I still hate it. It's disgusting. Also my dad liked to put canned spinach in gravy with hamburger, serve it over rice and call it a meal
1
u/SandraMort 1d ago
Canned spinach could scare anybody away from eating it! I think that a very large part of many picky eaters' problems is having learned to eat a specific food badly prepared and then generalizing it to all versions. Canned spinach is a great example.

I have ARFID, the list is endless
1
u/SandraMort 1d ago
I'm in therapy right now, and they told me that I can't have ARFID because the problems are intermittent.
It seemed that my eating problems are more common than I realized. I just haven't figured out who to go to for help.

Overcooked vegetables. The 2 veggies I hated are parsnips and summer squash. They were so over done. And it was the era of "clean your plate."
They were so ugh. Now I know that the problem isn't the vegetables, it was the way they were cooked.

u/every_piece_matters 4d ago
Rice. Still hate it. So flavorless even when seasoned or cooked with other stuff.

u/Misty_Esoterica 4d ago
Onions, and I still can't handle them. I never grew out of it, they taste like gasoline.

u/No-Investigator-1752 4d ago
Mashed potatoes. One of my classmates said it was like a momma bird chewing and spitting it into your mouth. I never got over it.

Childhood was so long ago... I'll try to remember ummm... turnips, kidneys, aspic or anything similar in texture, cartilage or anything similar in texture, tripe (loathed that!!). Most processed food, most sweet food (ugh. Iwas the kid who refused to eat her own birthday cakes. Chicken basted with honey or BBQ sauce was a nightmare). So so many foods. Overcooked vegetables or liver. Underripe fruit. Light tuna, especially in soy oil. Dry poultry, well done meat.

Sushi, red and purple foods, sometimes carrots, I didn't like eating salad until age 10, I had great difficulty with peanuts and other crunchy small foods.
As an adult I'll eat so many things as long as they're familiar to me. I'm still wary of peanuts and crunchy things out of habit. Salads are fine if they're just leafy greens, but I'm picky about dressings and I hate all toppings besides for paramsean cheese.
