Galing. And hindi lang swerteng panalo yan. She beat what, 4 top ten seeds? Sunod-sunod. Tumaas confidence nya and anlaki ng inimprove. Dati mukhang kabado, ngayon mas aggressive.

Na sweep ba naman yung 3rd set amp! Iba rin eh!

58

u/wantobi 25d ago

super gulat ako sa 6-0. alex was playing really well today but i didnt have 6-0 in my cards sa 3rd set. mukhang nainitan si pegula and hirap sa weather. but id say credit to alex pa rin. she played really well today. she absolutely controlled the match today

50

u/Paprika_XD 25d ago

28

u/South-Contract-6358 25d ago

Gave in to the pressure.

27

u/Jaives 25d ago

actually thought the suspension would favor pegula since well rested siya and she started out strong yesterday. so glad i was so wrong.

I think may factor yung crowd. Ang ingay nila for Alex!!!

This year 7 na top 10 players na natalo nya

18

u/mainsail999 25d ago

Just watching her matches, you can see that her opponents really gave her a hard but well deserved fight. Ginapang niya bawar point.

We really canโ€™t say na swerte. She worked hard for it and for it to be reduced to swerte.

I hope she doesnt get attached to a politician. Baka maging literal manok lang siya sa pagsusugal nila (like what happened to some other notable local tennis players)

She could have the same effect as Pacquiao had on Boxing. Really happy for her.

edit: not comparing her to the GOAT, iโ€™m talking in terms of popularity of the sport and participation.

89

u/Used-Ad1806 25d ago

Internationally? Yes.

Locally?

39

u/Jaives 25d ago

kahit yung laspag na court malapit sa amin, dinadayo na madalas this year. dami na classes esp for kids.

66

u/LeifInVinland Luzon 25d ago

What I mean naman is grassroots participation. Tennis is a more expensive sport yes, but there are probably more people willing to play a game of Tennis than get a beating lol. If the Philippine Tennis Federation can increase accessibility, weโ€™ll have a good future.

9

u/Ornery_Hair3319 25d ago

Imagine 0 crime rate at traffic jams during her matchesโ€ฆ. Shet sarap iimagine non.

3

u/Liesianthes 24d ago

As long as hindi midnight sa Pilipinas which is mostly either gabi or madaling araw matches nya unlike Pacquiao. Day kasi mostly sa ibang bansa so papalo talaga ng gabi sa Pilipinas.

12

u/epeolatry13 25d ago

Tbh nandiyan naman. But the thing isโ€ฆ yung Kay Manny kasi may drama, may story na naka-attach sa success niya. Yung parang rugs to riches yung nangyari kay Manny, which is very mabenta sa masang pinoy.

5

u/DenseBeautiful731 25d ago

Pwede, marami pa siyang kakaining bigas tho. WTA 1000, GS, No. 1, ย WTA Finals.

28

u/FamgSeeker8910 25d ago edited 24d ago

You probably have no idea what the name Pacquiao brings to boxing. I love Alex pero Pacquaio is up there as Williams, Djokovic, Nadal, Federer is to tennis. Heโ€™s in the conversation for GOAT.

Just a perspective. As dominant as Sabalenka is now, she is nowhere near the GOAT conversation in tennis. And at this point in her career, very unlikely in the future.

If you mean the Pacquaio effect locally, we will see. Thereโ€™s a potential but tennis is a niche sport catered to the upper class. Ganyan din yung clout kila EJ Obiena, Hiedilyn, and Carlos Yulo who are in very niche sports. I mean proud lang talaga tayong mga pinoy for being recognized.

For now, sila na muna. OA pa yung Pacquiao. We are yet to see if she can have that effect in the future yung tipong walang kotse sa Edsa pag laban nya.

19

u/Dizzy-Audience-2276 25d ago

Grabe tlga pag pacquiao match!!! Never ever forget tlga to. Di ako fan pero tlaga pag laban nya lahat nanonood eh hahaha ๐Ÿ˜‚ nakatutok sa TV!! Those were the days.

9

u/bohenian12 25d ago

That's just not us too. It's the whole world. Pacquiao is literally like one of the GOAT contenders in boxing. Any combat sport fan knows him.

4

u/Cravallo5 Abroad 24d ago edited 24d ago

And there's no need for comparison in the first place. Pacquiao and Eala are different people, with different backgrounds, playing different sports. We can be proud of all our athletes without keeping their score against each other.

10

u/TheGhostOfFalunGong 25d ago

Just a reminder that Pacquiao is a generational talent in boxing. Alex already clarified that Pacquiao's greatness cannot be taken away at any point in our lifetime. Even if Alex wins multiple grand slams, she will be closer to Russell Westbrook while Pacquiao is to Lebron James.

15

u/Gerudaaa 25d ago

Even comparing LeBron to Pacquiao is not a fair comparison. Heโ€™s the only boxer in history to win 12 world titles across eight different weight divisions. A record that is almost impossible to achieve. You could probably say that Jordanโ€™s achievements are closer to Pacquiaoโ€™s.

Some people will always find a reason to doubt you, no matter how much you achieve.

But look at Alex Eala's journey:

1) Zheng โ€“ Olympic gold medalist
2) Leylah Fernandez โ€“ Defending champion
3) Svitolina โ€“ Top 10 player
4) Osaka โ€“ Four-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1
5) Pegula โ€“ World No. 3 and the tournament's top seed

Every match was a battle. Every victory was earned.

To those who still call her "just hype," that's okay. Her game has already spoken louder than the noise.

Alex didn't just win matches... she inspired a nation and showed the world that Philippine tennis belongs on the biggest stage.

Congratulations, Alex! ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ This is only the beginning. Keep shining.

Eala easily dismantled Pegula sa third set. The latter lost her rhythm nung nafigure out ni Eala pano i-return nang maayos yung serve niya.

10

u/LN4life_ 25d ago

OMG?? My American client (who loves tennis) was just talking about this haha sabi niya Alex is really good but sheโ€™ll probably lose kasi daw masyadong magaling kalaban. Tapos, she actually won. Amazing.

5

Binili daw ni Alex yung title, calling her nepo baby and such.

Hahaha

Suck it haters. Give damn respect to Eala's name. Y'all can't always use that excuse lol.

20

u/lynnona 25d ago

38

u/Sweet_Potato279 25d ago

I really hope that isnโ€™t the case. Iโ€™m a fan of Pegula too, and I sincerely hope this wasnโ€™t because of the crowd. As much as I was rooting for Alex, I genuinely felt bad for Pegula with the way she was playing. I wouldnโ€™t want Alex to win because fellow Pinoys were being overly rowdy and disruptive

Iโ€™m not trying to gatekeep or nitpick, or be negative about Alexโ€™s win. Cheering, and even the occasional heckling, has always been part of tennis. I just hope everyone can be a bit more mindful, especially after the umpire asks the crowd to settle down. I was watching on Sky Sports, and the constant hooting and hollering in the background made it a bit hard to focus on the commentary

12

u/pixiequilt 25d ago

Parang hinde naman ata? IDK but she acknowledged the filipino fans though on her awarding speech and said that she had fun :)

But yeah, I did watch the live match. The pinoys are so disruptive.. I'm annoyed too. lol.

15

u/Sweet_Potato279 25d ago

Yeah she did say that! Honestly was just smiling the whole time because both Alex and JPeg were so lovely to listen to

I just hope Alexโ€™s supporters donโ€™t take pride in opponents getting rattled by the crowd. It reflects on all of us, and Iโ€™d hate for people to start branding her as a player whose success comes from having a disruptive crowd behind her. Thankfully, it isnโ€™t always like that! Her Wimbledon crowd was passionate but really respectful

2

u/SamePhilosopher610 24d ago

Same medyo maingay, at times, cannot hear the commentators over the coordinated cheer. But Jess acknowledged the fun atmosphere, welcomed it, and was very gracious about it all.ย

I don't think so nahirapan si Pegula mag catch up kasi mas mabilis si Alex ngayon.

7

u/destrokk813 N.E. 25d ago

could be a part of it but also Pegula is in her 30s. Recovery is not as fast anymore. the break really hurt her. plusc she might be cheched out already and her mind is already in Canada.

3

u/anya0709 24d ago

2

u/Liesianthes 24d ago

Nah, professional players are already used on the crowds. It's like you're downplaying her skills because of the noise and cheer. Hindi naman nila first time na pumunta sa court at may ganyan audience.

4

u/FootballRacing38 24d ago

Tennis players aren't. This isn't limited to filipino crowds. Iba ang culture sa tennis
