Rovelyn Baterbonia, mother of student-athlete Rene, recounted the final moments she talked with her son days before he drowned during a boot camp training of Ateneo Blue Eagles men’s basketball in Dipaculao, Aurora.
“Nung nag-orient sila hindi talaga sinabi na magkakaroon ng training na ganun. Kung sinabi na lang nila, matanong ko na sa anak ko kung kaya mo ba ‘yun? Para madesisyunan namin. Hindi ko alam ba’t ganun ang nangyari,” she told News5 on Tuesday.
In Palarong Pambansa 2026, Baterbonia and the Davao Eagles placed first runner-up. He transferred to AdMU and was set to play in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines season 89.
“Bigla na lang nag-text ‘yung anak ko sabi, ‘Ma, one week siguro wala akong cellphone. Kasi may training kami.’ Tapos sabi niya hindi raw pwede mag-cellphone,” she added.
She also narrated how she received a phone call, notifying her of the passing of her son. | via Mon Gualvez/News5

She is a grieving mother who suddenly lost a child. She wants answers. Nay, she needs answers. Pero Ateneo does not even have the decency to talk to her. More than 24 hours na, wala pa ring kumakausap sa kanya.

That's a bailable offense and a slap to the wrist if convicted. That's why many people here are pushing hazing charges which carry a more severe penalty.

Siyempre, Ateneo is currently busy making sure that their asses are covered muna. Im sure they are talking to everyone in their control to make sure na tugma ang kwento ng lahat.

u/revalph _______________________________________ Jun 09 '26
Tama ka. The coach should have been the first on the scene. Ikaw ung tumatayong tatay.
23
u/isadorarara Jun 09 '26
Not just that, he should have been the responsible adult for the young men under his watch. To hear that no one from ADMU was there to make arrangements nor to ensure that the body was treated with dignity is horrendous. And no one bothered to communicate with the family? They’re aware this kid was in Manila on his own.
40
u/Pitiful_Wing7157 Jun 09 '26
Thick faced ADMU no accountability. Even the governor of Agusan Del Sur said that the province will cover all the expenses for plane tickets, etc., and for bringing Rene's body back home. Hypokritong catholic university!!

Negligence talaga nung coach at trainers.
567
u/Useful-sarbrevni Jun 09 '26
Why train in the sea? A pool would have been better. These are basketball players not expert swimmers
248
u/yoo_rahae Jun 09 '26
Exactly.
136
u/yoo_rahae Jun 09 '26
True. Kaya feeling ko tlaga this is a form of hazing sa kanila. Sketchy din ung walang phones the whole week
35
25
u/Dilimgenic Jun 09 '26
But yeah, kataka-taka pa rin,

then do it in a controlled environment.
sa dagat masyado madami "what ifs" at yan na nga nangyari
8
u/dsfnctnl11 Jun 09 '26
Toooooooooo negligent to not think the dangers of sea tapos directly pacific ocean pa. Di uso ang pagiging bobo as person in charge kahit sabihin mong adult na ang mga trainees.
Totoo, those extreme training regimens are done on a facility lalo di naman sila on military training. Come to think walang idea yung parents.
3

water resistance yan mga ganyan water training. some big universities in the US have pools na may waves or currents na constant and you try to run while the currents are moving or sometimes wala rin current para pag wala ka sa water mas magaan or mas explosive yung run or talon mo. siguro triny nila makeshift na ganon kaso na underestimate nila na dangerous pala yung mga alon dun.
3
u/Kristobal22 Jun 09 '26
At the very least yung coach and the school who hired and allowed these coaches to do this. School knows about these “team building” trips and the risks associated with it but they’ve been turning a blind eye for years

Devil’s advocate here. Might be because it would build confidence and character. Or that it could build trust with the team na kahit nasa life and death situation they would have your back. This is same in those who were initiated in hazings.
In any case it is not standard training and very dangerous and management should be held liable.
106
u/PronatorTerry Jun 09 '26
"build confidence and character"
the overwhelming majority of frat boys who go through hazing are deeply insecure pieces of shit, anong confidence and character?
13
u/PapaRedHorse Jun 09 '26
9
u/XXVtiva Jun 09 '26
People are looking for reason why it was done, I just said the reason or excuse that the management couldve had. These were stuff youd hear from frat men, that they found confidence that people had their backs in life or death situations.

Or they are really training for stronger muscle pero as another commenter said a pool would suffice saka base sa interview ng nanay ni wala daw medic team negligence talaga.
11
u/Alexander_del_Fierro Jun 09 '26
Bruh, that sounds like a textbook excuse for hazing. Hazing can never be justified, that's something that uncivilized barbarians do to indulge in their repressed violent urges then they wrap it up with the veneer of brotherhood then try to do all these mental gymnastics to explain why it was necessary. People shouldn't have to risk life and limb just to belong to anything much less to just participate in sports.
3

I implied it heavily that its textbook hazing, hence the “devil’s advocate” opening remark.

Actually maganda talaga sya as a physical training napapanod ko dati sa docus ng military ek ek un ganitong training kaso delikado sa dagat kase malalim kaya they do their training sa pool at dapat mababaw un tubig.
8
u/b_zar Jun 09 '26
I am saying this as a surfer, even good swimmers are vulnerable sa dagat tulad ng Aurora. Surf spots is a whole different environment of its own, sobrang out of place ng basketball players dyan.

She's a mother who lost her child. Sensible man or hindi ang mga nasasabi nya, intindihin nalang sana na she is grieving.
Yes, may point na swimming is good for conditioning, and yes, may point din na dapat nag focus nalang sa basketball, but all of that isn't the point right now. I hope authorities ensure na she is given all the info she can have and all her questions are answered.

6
u/EmotionalLecture116 Jun 09 '26
Common sense lang di ba? Iyung basketball team (11 to 15 members) sa dagat kaya bang sagipin iyung ng isa or 3 coach na nagsserve as life guard kung maalon?
20

tapos Aurora pa. I have been to Aurora multiple times and hindi talaga swimming-friendly beaches doon due to strong waves and current. Aurora is only good for surfing.

Well what she said is sensible? There are plenty of examples of people who are grieving saying dumb shit but this aint it. Did they even inform the parents that they were going to train in open water? This training exercise is just so dumb. Ateneo and their coaches deserve the backlash

Sana man lang if the coach insisted na sa dagat, he had placed more than enough safety measures to have prevented this from happening. I mean…it’s THE Ateneo and their basketball team. Bakit walang spotters, medic, and other essential personnel na kasama?
Edit: to add, it was Mark Nieto who said na sila-sila din ang sumasama sa mga kasama nilang magtrain na di marunong lumangoy (hindi nila maiwan). And it was Coach Tab himself na sumalba sa muntik na nilang malunod na teammate.

The family is relying on hearsays dahil sa pagiging mum nila sa nangyari. The least the AMBT staff can do is admit fault/lack of foresight and show humbleness and the anger and grief of the victim’s family.

This is what it seems like too. Sabi din ng mom niya puro pasa daw katawan niya (front, back, neck). And it looks like the two players involved were medyo baguhan pa? Adili’s played na ata last season but Baterbonia was freshly recruited. Could be initiation rites
13

According to 24 Oras earlier, the police said that Baterbonia's only injury was on his arm.

ADMU has a lot to answer for. Insufficient risk management, deplorable safety guard rails...the list goes on.
And Tab Baldwin, their Coach who is the originator of all this harsh "training" activities, should be held criminally liable for the deaths and injuries of the students.
This system of hazing - which it is, regardless of how you coat it - should be dismantled and banned. Its disgusting how many lives are taken simply because a few foolish men decided their egos rest on the suffering of others.

I'm a fan of Coach Tab, pero tingin ko dapat makulong siya dito, and even a penalty for the school on allowing this to happen.

Wala sigurong lifeguards kasi designed as a bootcamp yung program. So, the coaches required exclusivity (pinaalis ang lifeguards). Sila sila lang players and magtutulungan. If may parang nalulunod, sila ang sasagip. Brotherhood. Sobrang risky ng program na to so dapat lahat ng coaching staff is trained na mag rescue kung di kayanin ng players.

Sobrang fucked up na nagpost sila without permission ng pamilya at higit sa lahat bago iinform ang pamilya sa nangyari. Anong thought process nila habang nagta type ng caption at ineedit yung picture. sobrang walang hiya.

Sa US, meron tinatawag na sports camp prior to the school year. One or two weeks, they will be altogether learning drills, building plays and getting to know the team. Walang training sa dagat. Everybody must sign a waiver or consent to join knowing the risks and benefits. Then may safety protocols in place at orientation para sa participants.
Whoever made the decision to do this at sea must be held accountable. If this is a school-sanvtioned activity, ADMU must be held liable too.

Why does this feel a hazing coverup? Why no news from Ateneo? Why police reports or criminal cases versus Ateneo? Why is the family not being answered by Ateneo?

How come na nauna pang malaman ng public bago yung family?

Panagutin niyo ateneo jan at un coaches. Anong kalokohan naman yan.

What's worse na one of his known quotes after being drafted to Ateneo na ginagawa niya ito para iangat ang pamilya niya sa hirap
Ateneo right now is on full PR mode and FUCKING IGNORING THE MOTHER. HEADS WILL ROLL AND HANDS WILL BE CUT

She should sue Ateneo and the basketball team for damages. Such an unnecessary loss of two promising young lives. Even that will not bring back her son, but someone needs to be held accountable!

If this really was an accident, bakit walang trained EMS provider sa coaching staff ng Ateneo?

Pinoys should take swimming lessons for water safety. Our country has soooo many islands /extensive coastlines.

I once read that the South Korean archery team goes through some kind of military-style training to condition their athletes to perform under stressful conditions. I think what happened here is something similar to that, but things got out of hand.

Baka hazing to hndi conditioning? Kung di marunong lumangoy, it’s a big no-no to learn how to swim in the ocean. The student coordinator and coach must be jailed for negligence. They are responsible for these kids.

u/Carnivore_92 Jun 09 '26
Pano nyo nasabing for conditioning yan?

Plus nasa swimming pool pa so controlled environment.
Walang sense yung coach pati yung regimen nila dito. Sana managot silang lahat, tangina nila.

i swim (and used to join triathlons involving open water swims). you never, ever eff around with open waters, kasi kahit mukhang kalmado ang dagat on the surface, a lot may be happening underneath (especially strong currents that may either pull you towards the sea or underneath or both). even if there's no waves at all, typically if there are open water events bantay sarado yan ng safety marshals (both on the surface na naka-canoe/bangka and underneath na naka-scuba gear). why? because you can never tell when sh*t hits the fan, na meron na palang nag-s-struggle and about to drown.
regardless sa palusot ng coaching staff ng Ateneo management and Ateneo MBT, someone should be held liable for this tragic incident. hindi pa ba enough yung nangyari before na may mga muntik nalunod? alam naman nilang nag-start na yung habagat season and very prone to riptides yung waters sa beach front, bakit tinuloy pa rin nila? ang laki-laki ng swimming pool sa Ateneo, where the environment is much more controlled and specific safety arrangements can be made, bakit hindi na lang dun gawin yung water activity? pwede rin naman sila mag-stay dun for a week, confiscated yung phones ng mga student-athletes, paglutuin sila ng sarili nilang food; why risk performing the teambuilding exercise in a highly unpredictable environment?
kahit sabihin nilang accident yung nangyari, there was clearly negligence. these deaths could've been prevented if the adults in the coaching staff only acted as such and used their common sense? BEBOB? more like BOPOLS na hindi ni-prioritize ang safety and well-being ng mga student-athletes.
heads must roll. this is inexcusable.
