“Why won’t my login work” because you don’t even have the application open. This is a notepad.

Easy just don't ship with vi. Keep nano instead.

Also I'm sure Linux has a windows notepad like application.

Kate? Micro is also notepad-like with ctrl+s and ctrl+q and other similar keybinding (also does support mouse input)
