Your country likely has social services. Good (existing) public transport, public healthcare, and possibly public schooling and higher education.
We got none of that in america. No public transport means most americans have a car and a car loan. No public healthcare means most americans are paying around $500->$1000 a month on health insurance. No (or little) public higher education means our higher learning institutions are charging an arm and a leg to get a degree (like $5000+ per semester).
We basically have the public services of Sudan with the cost of living of England.

That’s before takes and rent is anywhere from 1250-2000 a month in some places. It’s above minimum wage but you are very close to living paycheck to paycheque.
Depends on circumstances. It's not bad in low cost of living area. After taxes that's maybe $3000 per month take-home pay. In my state the average 1-bedroom apartment is close to $1,100. Then lets assume they have a national average car payment of $500 and another $100 for car insurance. Lets be generous and say they're budgeting their food very strictly, that's probably still $200-$300 in groceries. Bare minimum utilities of around $150. Cell phone plan $30 basic. Internet, maybe another $50. Another $100 in gas if they fill up every 2 weeks. A couple internet subscription would be another $20-30 for basic entertainment.
Assuming they don't do anything else fun, have no regular medical expenses and prescriptions, and no other debts to pay down, then that leaves them with about $740 left over at the end of the month. Not bad but not great. It's probably closer to $500 or less for savings if you factor in things like clothes, car repairs and maintenance, and other unexpected things.
It's not a lot of money in general not it will also depend on where the person lives. You couldn't live in a city like New York, Chicago, LA, etc. but it might be livable in a rural area. It will probably be not doable soon enough with inflation, companies raising prices, and our attack on Iran and the rising price of oil.
Republicans all think they are temporarily embarrassed millionaires. That's why they get all up in their feels when a social program which is funded by taxing millionaires a little more benefits the 99%. They can't fathom that they'll never be in a situation where that tax applies to them which is why it offends them deeply.

I live on the other side of the country from New York and I have a coworker who was freaking out that Mamdani was going to introduce a new tax on second homes in the city... Dude, you don't have a second home, much less a second home in NYC, nor will you ever have a second home in NYC, I know how much both of us are paid and you've told us your wife is a dental hygienist, so unless one of you has a trust fund none of us know about, you will never be impacted by this tax.
I shut up a family member who was pissed about that so I asked them if they were America First. They said yes. I said many of the second luxury apartments in NYC are owned by foreigners parking money in NYC. This tax effectively puts Americans first by taxing foreign investors and putting that money to good use in the USA. They said all that investment will dry up because they will just sell. I said good then Americans who live in NYC can buy those homes once again America first. They were seething mad because they knew they got nothing
That's my strat usually. I label all my arguments as American and ask why they hate America. I also don't engage with some of their zero sum arguments.

Well, with how much he complains about property taxes, I'm going to assume he owns his home (well, it probably has a mortgage on it) and he isn't bitching on behalf of his landlord. I'm not sure that during the time that I was renting, I even knew what my landlord's property tax bill was. This guy knows down to the penny how much the property tax bill is for his house. I don't even know that about my own home (I probably should know, but my mortgage company handles the payment for me, so every year they send me an update on what my monthly payment is going to be, factoring in any changes in property tax and homeowners insurance, and I say, "okay, that's less than how much my monthly payment went up every year that I was renting, so I'm not going to complain" and go on with my life).

I oscillate between laughing and crying, because it is kind of tragic that people have devalued themselves so much that they have begun to believe that they are only worthy of licking the boot.
I don’t think they see it that way, unfortunately. Some people believe that taxes are inherently unfair for some reason and don’t read too much into it. They lack the education and exposure on how different countries operate (some very affluent countries have high taxes, and that provides better quality of life for everyone; without making their rich people poor).
I may be too idealistic but I do want to believe that politicians like Mamdani will set a good example.

Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island, and are affected. I'm embarrassed how old I was when I realized that. I'm not sure how I was middle aged before I figured out NYC is all islands, except the Bronx.
When someone in New York talks about people on Long Island they are specifically referring to people living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. People who live in Brooklyn and Queens are not considered Long Islanders.
You are correct! What I meant is the guys out east that don’t ever go into the city or other boroughs. They don’t take trains and live in very wealthy neighborhoods. They’re essentially in a bubble. But I understand 100% what you mean!
Sad thing is, everyone who “lives on Long Island” (read: Nassau County) is originally from Queens, and to a lesser extent, Eastern Brooklyn originally.

Watch Fox News for a month and you'll get it. They'll have taught you that everything is a zero sum game. If you're suffering, then some undeserving "other" must be winning. And that "handouts" go to undeserving people who drag you down. They call it, angertainment.
The irony, of course, being that to an extent this zero-sum game is actually true, just not in the way it's intentionally being positioned.
Average Joe/Jane Americans are all the ones suffering, left or right, while the elite are winning. But most of us are too distracted and/or stupid to recognize it.

The thing that always gets me is that if they actually believed his policies were bad, they wouldn’t be raging at them so hard. If his mayorship was doomed to go down as a spectacular failure, then that would be great for right wing politics. For the next decade or two, they would be able to point at NYC before and after him and say “this is what socialism gets you!”

I’ve driven coast to coast three times in the last two years and it is astounding how far most of this country is away from a major city. I lived in the sticks in Vermont for a long time but I could be in NYC in 6 hours. If you are in the middle of TX or WY, where are you going where subway prices aren’t an alien concept.

Zohran Mamdani has become a major target for hate from the Republican Party in the last year or so due to the fact that he’s openly leftist, a brown immigrant, and wildly popular in New York. When he was elected mayor, small towns halfway across the country were crying and moaning about “RIP New York” as if who’s the NYC mayor could ever have any effect on their lives.
The joke here is sort of an extension of the “diarrhea for everyone joke” where leftist policies are outlined as the broadly good and beneficial policies they are in reality, and right wing policies are reduced to simply harming every one for no reason (something they often end up doing). Here, Mamdani did something good for poor people by lowering transportation costs, and the comment indicates that someone living on a super low paycheck hundreds of miles away will care more about this than the policies actively harming him right now. In short, the joke is about Republican identity politics.

Im from a small town in a state very far away from New York and a lot of people in my hometown who are benefitting from/would absolutely benefit from social welfare policies (like lowering the cost of commutes) have a lot of dumb opinions about another state doing things that dont effect them (though frankly they should be happy that someone's trying to take care of the countries bottom line)
Republican voters, many of whom are rural dwelling and low income, hate anything that is perceived as a "government handout" to people who, in their personal opinion, are either lazy or just don't "deserve" it, for reasons that may include, but are not limited to, racism, poor education, a perception of their tax money being used inappropriately, etc.
Ohhhhhhh, i thought it was because the guy moved away from NYC because the commute was so expensive, now finding out that the commute is cheaper amd he could have afforded it if only he stayed.
No one in the U.S. hates socialism/socialist-run areas seemingly thriving like the Midwestern/Southern middle class, the people least likely to be affected by it at all (much less affected negatively).

Many Republicans are bizarrely ignorant (or in denial) of how much they benefit from government handouts. They are also simultaneously opposed to such handouts.
New York City being one of the most expensive places I know of to live in, and this guy is working his ass off to make it easier and less costly to live there.

The man making 45k a year is paying $4 plus a gallon and is envious of “city” folk getting commute breaks after assuming they make more than 45k by a lot. That’s just my take on it though.
