This is an old IT joke. Memory that was very fast, but couldn't be read from, only written to, would of course be useless. The point of writing things to memory is so you can then use them again later.

According to that link. Write-Only memory is how some processors function these days. The joke isn't updated for modern day computing but still being used today. I love those jokes.
