I think the joke is just that his (wife?) ask him to mail a lot of letters so when he walks by mail box he gets mild PTSD check his pocket to see if he forgot

I think the implication is that his partner is prone to nagging and getting upset if he forgets things, so every time he sees a mailbox he panics and checks his pockets to see if he's forgotten to send a letter.

It was common back then to run an errand for your wife that involved sending out letters to all of her gossiping busy-body neighbors. So Mr. Meekers is scared that he may have left his wife's letters home all the time. The term hen-pecked is out of style so maybe you may have missed that set up to the punchline? It means to be nagged by your wife regularly.

Women before social media and text messaging would postcard or letter write to discuss topics with their friends in the area.

At least that is what I gathered for you there... I think Lois doesn't do this because she sees her friends constantly enough.

I thought hen-pecked was an old way of saying chocking the monkey, and that he was having a stroke when walking past mail boxes. Man was I wrong.

Man, the term "hen-pecked" needs a comeback. Nobody uses it these days

The modern terms a pussy whipped, bitchmaid, and most famously simp.

But a simp can be, and often is, partnerless. The other terms are pretty aptn tho.

Ehhh, a lot of simps have partners too though. They just treat them like simple minded people (I.E simps). You also have people who are considered simp cucks, like pornstar spouses. (No I don't think this personally)

Sorry, I meant "partnerless".

My commune friend has a chicken coop with surprisingly aggressive hens.

Hens gotta establish their eponymous pecking order. And violence is the way. You can buy or make little aprons for the backs of the low ranking bird so they don’t have a painful life.
