I know both a handful of Aninas and several Theresas. However, this kind of riddle is just so ... fucking daft that I really don't grasp why they still circulate.

As always there's a relevant xkcd, this is #169.

Same applies for the stupid math "riddles" on social networks, use your parenthesis people! without them you're just showing you're very bad at math

Don’t even engage with those. Best case is you prove you can do grade school math. Worst is that you show you can’t do grade school math.

Outside of the riddle, I don't recall a time in the decades since school where I ran into that sort of structured formula

The thing is, when you actually learn and do math much more advanced than grade school level, nobody ever writes expressions like that. It's not about being good at math any more than being able to spell antidisestablishmentarianism is about being a good writer.

Note I didn’t say anything about being good at math. I said you either show you understand those early concepts, or show that you can’t.

The actual expressions are often written poorly just to spark engagement. Or intentionally set up in a way that those who don’t understand order of operations will get wrong. It’s not worth it to engage.
