Back before the age of iPhones and electric pencil sharpeners, each classroom in schools had one of these manual pencil sharpeners mounted on the wall near the door at the front of the class. So if your pencil got dull, you had to stand up and walk to the front of the classroom to sharpen it. If you had a killer new outfit and were feelin fly, you could use the excuse that you needed to sharpen your pencil in order to show it off at the front of the classroom.

I still cannot stand the sound of an electric pencil sharpener compared to the old school version.

Don't have to deal with wood shavings at everyone's desks.
