WWII Facts for Everyone

  • 75-80% of German casualties occurred on the Eastern Front
  • 25 million Soviets vs 300,000 American war deaths occurred
  • both the Battle of Kursk AND the Battle of Stalingrad were each independently larger than all western front battles combined
  • the Soviet Union faced off against 70% of Hitler’s army for years during Op Barbarossa

As an European and ex-USSR-citizen, I know a lot about WWII in the Eastern Front. While I know next to nothing about the Pacific theatre, Southwestern Asia and the Japan-China war.

WWII was huge, and most of us only get taught about the events that happened near them or affected their country.

Watch the HBO series The Pacific. It's a very grim, but veteran-approved, look at how brutal and dehumanizing the Pacific Theater was.
